    A Question of Parasites

A few years back I hired one of those traditional canoe-type paddly things hewn out of a tree that the Thais use . Wanted a day just paddling around quite a nice river that goes through Missy's village .
    The locals were surprised .
They had not seen someone just paddling around for the enjoyment . They only go out to search for fish or edible plants . Why would you exert yourself for no real purpose when you could be sitting in the shade with a Hong Thong and ice ?

Got diverted but it was a wrong diversion .

Anyway ....... paddling about and getting too hot and sweaty . So I jumped out into the water and had a pleasant cooling-down . Thais nearby were too shocked to react quickly and stop me .

    Why stop me ?

It was because nobody had ever said anything to me about river snakes !
I never knew there were river snakes . Or that they are quite nasty things . Don't know if it's true but it did shake me up .
Don't really want to find out either .

But it got me thinking ...... as I freely know nothing whatsoever about any of this stuff .
How safe are fish that are bred in all the pools of standing water that I see ?
Missy paid a man with a digger some years ago --- to come and dig out a rice paddy .
They then filled the paddy with water so it's essentially a big pond about 5 feet deep but its standing water . No flow in or out .
They throw fishlets in there and let them grow and then they breach the banks to let all the water go. Then they slosh around in the mud at the bottom grabbing all the fish .

But I have this feeling that standing water and heat means worms and parasites .

THEY freely eat these fish but I won't . Nobody told me about river snakes and nobody has said about worms or parasites in these fish ...... but it is believable to me .

So those of you who are keenly knowledgeable about fishing --- would you eat them ?
If you assure me that a hot Grilling will kill the Parasites I will still not be keen to go back there and eat grilled parasites and worms .
No matter how incinerated they are .

^ OK. Glad you followed up. The link between the first post and the thread title was eluding me.

Need to be cooked well, or even better....frozen, to get rid of the bad stuff.

Southeast Asia has/had big problems with diseases gotten from fresh water fish.

Liver cancer is widespread because of it

    Edit. : google this:

Wasp, if you are worried about that then, for heavens sake, don't inquire what prawns/shrimp eat

Oh, if you eat rice, you've consumed your fair share of rice weevils.

Well helge ....... I was never keen on street food though it's undoubtedly tasty stuff . And this fish from the ponds gets barbecued and has a good-looking white meat to it . But yuck !!!
I did as you say ..... Googled ' liver cancer fish thailand ' and it said how popular in Thailand is the raw fish ground with spices and limes .
And how it kills 20 Thousand Thais a year . Liver Cancer .

I always believed that the limes and lemons would kill any parasites . Seems I was wrong .

    Thank you .

I was reading this week that you should boil your rice and then throw away the water and do it again to get rid of the Arsenic !!!!!

River snakes are generally harmless and those that do carry any venom shouldn't cause any problem for an adult. However, snakes tend to be good swimmers and prey on many animals found close to water, so it's not totally out of the question that you could come across something lethal such as a cobra or krait while you're in there (a hazard of the job for local fishermen checking their nets when bringing in the catch).

There were a couple of guests at that house who could match the venom of most serpents.

I see your a long time poster but you seem naive to the ways of the wild in the Thai bush. Have the locals told you about the wildcats that grow as big as a large dog and can kill a man? Or the really large pythons that could swallow you whole? Or the wild elephants that hid in the scrub when they hear a human coming, grab you around the neck and beat you to death against a tree. Mate, do yourself a favour and stay in the village.

^Except that fishing on the banks of Britain is more than a little bit different to what you're gonna find slithering and swimming in and around the waterways of a tropical country like Thailand.

Most straight people in Thailand would probably think it was a snake of the common reptile variety, Balders.

Each to their own though, mate. Whatever you get up to in your Silom soi 4 garden with your favourite python is entirely your own business.

P.S. I believe Dil has a few favourites around there too.

Is that guy that went swimming and got a parasite into his eyeball through a tiny scratch, then it spent 6 months slowly eating out his eyeball from the inside a poster here?

His name was Manny and I heard it was attempted suicide after being bullied on here. Immigration refused to believe him when they saw the state of him and compared it to his original passport photo during the raid. He was deported.

I just hope that the little scamp who drove him to throw himself in the drink - and allegedly told immigration that his ponytail was illegal - can sleep at night.
