    Wristwatch Maintenance

Mendip's current thread on his commute back to work strayed into a discussion on watches and taking of etc. Rather than continue on that thread, though I'd drop this here.

This particular watch (Cartier Roadster chronograph) I've had for around 15 years, and apart from giving it a scrub occasionally never take it off. It hasn't been serviced during that time either, and remains remarkably accurate (it's a mechanical/self winding movement). However, whilst the glass face is as new, the stainless steel case and bracelet have multiple scratches, which I would like to some how polish out, either professionally or diy.

    Any thoughts/suggestions?

I know absolutely nothing about Cartier but a quick look on Chrono24 shows that's not a common model and they're worth a few bob. Personally, I wouldn't be letting anyone touch it besides a Cartier service centre.

Yes, don't let an amateur do any work on your watch.

I have three less fashionable watches (Longines) and I am thinking of taking them to the service center next time I go to Bangkok and get them
partially serviced for 3000 baht each . A full service (restoration/complete disassembly ) is around 10.000 baht which is around 1/3 of the watches prices so I don't find it worth to do that.

Yes, if I wanted it serviced I would only use Cartier. However, all I would like at the moment is to have the scratches on the stainless steel case/bracelet polished out. If I knew what materials to do this myself I would, or use someone for whom it was a speciality. Just putting it out their in case anyone has similar experience.

You are correct, this is a simple polish job that any respectable jeweler could do.

Look on YouTube if you want to do it yourself

PAG, however did you manage to avoid the glass face getting scratched when you have all those scratches on the stainless steel case?

This is a pic of my sorry Rolex... I think in 27 years I'm on the third glass face. The first was bitten through by a dog and I eventually replaced the second due to general wear and tear. At home we have many narrow pathways lined by concrete walls and this is the result...

I've read of a product called Polywatch for taking scratches out of watch lenses, and have also read that toothpaste can be useful too. Would not be experimenting with either on an expensive watch though. For polishing cases they generally disassemble everything then use what looks like buff-wheels with varying degrees of abrasion, no idea how that could be done at home without the right gear and skills though...
