Perhaps a precedent case has helped to recognition of the "common law marriage" when some years ago a common wife (mia noi) of the hardworking field marshal Sarit claimed a great portion of the huge heritage (hundreds of US billions) for herself and his sons...

Slugging it out on the board isn't going to help, because our pov are based on at best limited experience of the Thai legal system supported with anecdotal evidence from friends and media, while most will agree neither of these are reliable.

Fex, an aggrieved nutty gf with a police record for violence, brutally attacked her former farang from behind with about a dozen witnesses, leaving him with permanent scars and injury. Cut and dry case, should've been, except, it ended up word vs word with the court (Pattaya) accepting her version leading to a twisted justification for the attack, having jailed her for a month during an earlier part of the same case, for lying. I could believe enough was lost in translation for the case to swing against the farang in this way, because the punchline turned out to be that having accepted her version, this meant that the farang was lying; he was arrested for perjury, passport held by immigration which turned out to be further ground for hoops and extortion, the case against him dragged on for almost 2 years of stress and cost a bundle, including I believe 50k or 80k to the judge via his lawyer though that could have ended up in any pocket, he was under threat of up to 4 years jail, and eventually got off after paying a fine, some sort of community service, and compo of around 65k to her by a certain date, which is sitting in a bank account waiting for the day before.

That's the story I got, and having known both parties for a number of years, and following the case as it progressed, and my perception of Thai attitudes toward farangs and life in general, it's very plausible, easier to believe than to question, but still doesn't mean it's true in every point.

Sorry, replace the billions with millions: (does it make it much difference? )

After Sarit's death, his reputation took a blow when an inheritance battle between his son, Major Setha Thanarat, and his last wife, Thanpuying Vichitra Thanarat, revealed the massive extent of Sarit's wealth, which totaled over US$100 million.[34] Besides sitting on the boards of 22 companies,[35] he was discovered to have owned a trust company, a brewery, 51 cars, and some 30 plots of land, most of which he gave to his dozens of mistresses. Thai language newspapers published the names of 100 women who claimed to have shared his bed, shocking the public when his corruption was uncovered.[36]

I recall the case making headlines for long time (25 years ago?). One of the "main" mia nois finally got few billions of Baht, don't know how much got the many "smaller" mia nois...

    Dunno,
I think even the super rich would miss a few 100 billions in a divorce case.

    1,000,000 baht = 32,400 dollars
    1,000,000,000 = 32,400,000 dollars.

Someone might notice, rich or poor.
