that looks very reasonable, and in line with a normal life in Bangkok

350K is not that much to be honest, my peers were more on like 500k THB a month, so I was the cheap one

100K a month is below poverty line in most farang countries, 350K is very middle class for expat farangs

^^ I actually just edited my post because it was very childish of me to type what I did. I have no idea of your spending habits, and to be honest, I have no interest in what they are/were.

What I was gonna call you out on was the word 'struggling'. How can anyone struggle with 350k per month of spending money?

There is a difference between what we earn and what we spend.

    good point,

struggling was referring to trying to spend less, and I thought it was ridiculous and wasn't getting enough value for that much budget

I would have loved to be on 100K a month and keep the rest as savings and investments,

Inmy previous job I did 200k a month easily..... mostly not on "living" expenses..... in saying that a house in my village has just come up for rent (my 3 bed house with huge backyard is 20k a month), its about the same size but has a pool....rent is 90k a month and is tempting.

Nope, my Mrs has done it all her life and the only credit she had was an interest free car loan. Her younger sister does it too, following her example. Mrs' older brother and sis constantly live hand to mouth, despite earning reasonable money because they have no idea where its spent.

I know a few on 500k (ish) a month.. the company they work for pays their rent and supply an on call car and driver basically leaving the 500k to buy food and whatever for the month.

Actually Thailand was quite expensive for me- mainly because I had the idiocy to invest in property a tinpot country, and paid the price in Capital losses.
And strange to say it, but I find my life here in Adelaide a bit cheaper than Thailand- that's thank to government largesse really. But hey- I paid for it from tax, so no foul.

    Chinese wife? indeed quite rare,

I would do my spending on spreadsheets, but eventually it became depressing, I felt like an ATM, so I stopped and would do estimates instead since most expenses were the same recurring ones

Maybe not as rare as you think- my first wife was HK Chinese.

Dunno- I don't want to crystalise it yet, because it would give the aussie government an excuse to not be so nice to me!
Lets just say, when you add divorce expenses and the stuff I left on the ground there, willingly, your estimate might be a tad shy.

Nope 1/2 from her mum's side. To say she's frugal would be an under exaggeration - we have arguments about trying to spend money

A lot depends on rent/mortgage, car, private drivers, etc. I know a few that live in Condo's overlooking the Chao Phraya river that cough up 175k bht for rent that comes with top amenities and that's not even top floor stuff. Some rents are 225k bht or more. That's half the cash burn. The rest is other living stuff in BKK.

Actually, if you want to live a decent life in Bangkok replete with full western comforts and standards, it's bloody expensive!

100%... I have the figures somewhere but I'm not inclined to find them again.

Early '90's cost comparison when I was investigating and negotiating the partnership that brought me over here in the first place. It cost me more to live in Bangkok's business district than it cost me to live in the Suburbs of Philadelphia Pennsylvania. And that was after taking full advantage of all tax breaks available. Foreign earnings tax exempt up to, I think it was USD $75k at the time.

The analysis and results really did surprise me.

But, if you look at the larger picture. Living in ANY metropolis' business center is an expensive proposition. The lucrative salaries offered by companies located in the centers is what justifies the 2 and 3 hour commutes many make. Metro mass transit is typically SRO during rush hours.

food is the biggest way to gentrify your budget. especially in bkk, where the choices to eat at 10x the local cost are everywhere. i always have a hard time saving money in bkk, but outside, upcountry its as easy as pie to live cheap and loving it. living cheap in bkk is quite miserable imo.

Well, I eat quite well and top of the line - sparing no expense.

    How big is your family?

    Where do you live?

How much do you spend per month? Per year?
