I saw a Swift for sale the other day was 210k bht ( Definitely negotiable). Was pretty new. Looked like a Repo. I thought, Shit man. I outta buy it and trash it. Easy to park, good on gas and don't care about door dings and side mirror removals by scooters. I do not carry anything but I could always strap it to the roof...
^^ I'm shy about my daily pedicure addiction.
All this just reminds me that I've got to get around to refreshing our budget.
After of course.Originally Posted by TheRealKW

I know that our expenses have roughly halved since moving from Bangkok to rural Ubon. Our regular monthly costs are under 30,000 baht, plus irregular stuff such as visa costs or trips away.
House rent is 1500 (special deal through family)
True tv and internet 960
electricity around 550/600
Town water 60, bottled water approx 250
fuel for our scooter 100, plus maybe 500 if we borrow SiL’s pickup
10,000 to the missus, for her somtam, flowers for Buddha, food for the monks, her phone, veggies at the market, etc
No bars here, so any drinking is done at home or with family, or a few beers when we eat out at a local restaurant...perhaps 1000 baht/month ?
Groceries at the mini-Tesco would be around 5000 plus a bit more at other local shops, and a bit of a splurge on western food items at Makro or Big C if we go into the city, so around 8000 baht.
I come in at 70K baht or so per month on the household (that is a pretty accurate figure). Missus, me, 18 year old son and three cats in a rented house, just outside Bangkok.
I think I have posted before, one of the smartest things I ever did was to make the missus write down in a book every single thing we spent money on (even if it is only 100 or 200 baht). Ended years of wrangling over money almost overnight. Now she complains about how much we spend, and how much everything costs. Music to my ears. 555
Biggest single expense is the boy. Couple of hundred baht per day, couple of thousand on the weekend, plus tuition, guitar lessons etc. Going to get hammered in a month or so when he starts Uni, not only the tuition fees and a new wardrobe for Uni, but he has also hit me up for a new phone and computer. Good kid though, so not a problem.
Did the same exercise when I realised we were basically just cruising along without too much of an idea.Originally Posted by nidhogg
Well worth it. Fallen back into bad old habits a bit though hence the need to update but the starting point will be a lot clearer and we'd still be within 90% or so of what's set out.
My wife has been on this from the beginning. Has paid dividends long term. However, its funny how what I buy sometimes is questioned and never anything she buys. Her rational is. I buy it for us.... Made me laugh at that one as I do not use lotion, make up clean off pads and other special things.
When I was home for 9 days, The Kerry driver came buy almost every day. I got tired of walking over to the gate to get her stuff. I told my wife, Just give the guy a gate opener.
jesus, 100K a month, how do you guys do it
I was on 350K THB expenses a month when I lived in Thailand, and I felt I was struggling
But not everyone is gonna have "Ladyboys" as a daily expense.Originally Posted by Dragonfly
And seriously, if you felt like you were struggling on that then you must have some seriously poor budgeting and finance skills.
We get through 150-180k a month leading a typical middle-class lifestyle.
Mortgage
2 decent motors (1 paid/other couple of years to go)
Few kids in school
Live-in nanny
Holidays and weekend getaways
A couple of higher-end restaurants/5*hotel buffets per month
Obviously kids activities, toys and clothes
All the other stuff that goes with family life.
We are not extravagant, but if you took the kids out of the equation, then I reckon we could halve our expenditures.
--EDIT--
Was gonna call BS on Dragonfly struggling on 350k per month, but what's the point?
