    You're all under arrest!

Thai girl arrested while on Tinder date at Wat Pho

A Thai girl was arrested while she was hanging out with a foreign boy at Wat Pho, Bangkok. The couple met on Tinder, the world-famous dating application. While they were exploring the temple she gave him information on interesting facts of the temple, they were both shocked when the girl got arrested with charges of being an illegal tour guide. She ended up paying a 2,000 THB fine.

The story went viral on Thai twitter after a friend of the girl in the incident shared the events online. The girl was arrested by an official from the Tourist Police who claimed she was acting as an illegal tour guide for the foreign boy. The twitter user wanted to share that any Thai person taking a tourist to an attraction is considered that you’re acting as a tour guide without permission to do so. The tweet stated “#touristpolice arrested my friend and she was fined 2,000 THB. The officer told her that a Thai person taking a foreigner to an attraction and giving them information about the attraction is considered illegal. She had to pay the fine right away and did not receive any proof of payment. What?”

The twitter user tweeted again stating “I called 1155 and asked whether you could take a foreign friend on your travels. The phone operator said you could as long as you don’t give any information to the friend. Because the act of giving information is considered acting as a guide. For example, if a foreign friend asks you “What is the reclining Buddha?” and you answer the question, then you can be arrested right away. This is funny and not good! I guess I can’t take anyone anywhere because apparently having a conversation is illegal”. What’s your opinion on the incident? Have any of your Thai friends gotten in trouble while traveling with you in Thailand?

This may have been a scam by one of the shites that hang out around tourist spots looking for someone to extort. But if 1155 confirmed the illegality of promoting Thai history and culture without a tour guide license, then our glorious leaders are obliged to order the RTP to enforce the Law of the land by arresting every person caught in the act of educating others about a temple or other tourist venue, or ftm Thailand.

Fwiw I would refuse to pay, and not for the first time invite them to arrest me, which puts any cop with a frivolous threat on the back foot.

the idiocy, stupidity, short sightedness and general lack of common sense and logic amongst these people is astounding.

that someone from an official organisation can say " you could as long as you don’t give any information to the friend. Because the act of giving information is considered acting as a guide " without being challenged or corrected by the government or police tells you all you need to know about this country.

My brother was with his wife, my sister, my mother and my wife at the Grand Palace in mid-2010 when this scam was attempted against my wife. He is a big big man and when he worked out what was going on used some non-verbal communication to get the two guys to back off and decamp. They were at the end and left immediately so there was no ramifications.

    its beyond a joke terry.

maybe you are used to dealing with retards coming from australia, but we brits have our standards and find such imbecility a little depressing when having to deal with it on an almost daily basis.

could explain why everytime I ask something to a Thai, their standard response seems to be "I don't know"

they are not clueless, they are simply protecting themselves

Best formula for self protection is to remain clueless!

The alternative is knowing and 'getting involved', which leads to confrontation.
