TV over the 'net in Thailand - what's it all about, then?

    Morning all!

OK, we will be imminently moving into the new house and I want to get a few things sorted out and even set up either before, or certainly very soon after we move in.

During the build, we relied on the SIM internet connection via our mobiles as we were not actually living in. The workforce living in the Chonburi Hilton appeared to have a v small dish with 'True' printed on it, and I assume that provided the entertainment - TV for sure and maybe internet? (sorry I really have no idea who or what provides what).

So, the last 2 visits I have made i attempted to 'get connected' via True, Dtac, TOT et al, this is for internet and TV because that's what i thought was supposed to happen.

I met with a brick wall.

''we don't cover that area'', ''you are too far out in the sticks'', ''try this other company'' etc etc etc.

OMG...living in paradise with no comms connections. Then someone told us that if all else fails we could get a SIM box (i think, like a phone but with a net connection via SIM card only). so we looked at that.

Crappy connection rates and expensive charges were a deterrent.

Anyway... the connection was finally sorted and its good.

We went to 3BB. The difference with them is, they are an internet service provider, not a phone company that do other stuff too.

''Yes we can connect you. Yes, you can have fibre optic. Yes... you can have an always on connection with reasonable speeds, and yes...when do you want us to connect it up!?''

So now we have a 700 /700 MBPS connection for 1300THB/month and I think that's pretty good.

so now..lol... what to do with it?

I want internet everywhere in the house and in the garden too, and I think that part is covered with my LAN-connected house and the Linksys EA9500 Max-stream AC5400 MU-MIMO gigabit WiFi router. (a gift from Etihad Airways via their guest miles program)

    So that leaves the TV.

and I am asking.... ''what to do''?

Of course i want access to everything. i would like to get some or all of the UK channels. the premier league would be good. movie channels (actually showing movies i have heard of), plus the usual news and documentaries. Of course, also she need Lakorn-fest so any system needs to get the Thailand channels too.

The list goes on - 4k broadcast content? yes please. subs option? if possible (don't even know if some systems do not transmit that if available, maybe they all do?), You-tube content? Yes I want that too..

I realise that each TV will need a 'box' to provide individual content (I'm sure the Thai contingent will get pretty fed up if I lock the only box to 24-hour Rush after Neil Peart's demise). but ,... do I need more than one box per TV to get everything i want? lol im not even sure what it IS that i DO want tbh.

I looked at international boxes (I want to make clear at this point that there is no double entendre intended with the word 'box' although i could envisage studying international boxes if the tv connection allows it, but shhh... dont tell PJ) such as the Amazon Fire TV cube nd the NVidia Shield Pro. Yes... they of course promote their own (paid) content because of course they are a business... but here is where i get lost. do they provide free content too? Do they provide, say, access to the Thai tv channels? or BBC1? Any youtube vid i have watched never explains or confirms this. do i need Netflix? i know its a subscription service but its not too expensive - or is it? what else should i be looking for? how can i get the above and any other stuff i do not even know but which members might suggest? can I get it all for free? do i need a 'dodgy box' (lol) which might stop at any time? questions questions questions!!!

Answers would be great - thanks in advance to all who have read this far and can assist.

Sorry... it's another of my famous war-and-peace threads.

    Cheers all!

While you're sorting out the magic TV box thing, go to HDPrime.

    HDPrime.tv

All the Brit channels, and everything else, all the live sports (sky sports, BeIn, etc etc)

Get a True Money card from the 7-11.

    100thb for 3 days, 380thb for 30 days.

    The sports are usually 720p.

For 100thb give it a go.

I'm presuming you have a computer connected to your TV, or have a smart TV that connects to the net.

    Me?

HDPrime would be anywhere you have the internet and a computer or Smart TV.

The OP's 700mb Fiber Optic would be more than enough, to understate it a bit. Mine's usually 100-200mbpm.

    Thanks Luigi for the input...

OK.. I have an older Sony 47'' smart TV so i guess somewhere along the line it can be connected to the 'net. i never did it before though.

so...to get that service as described, i need to :

    1. connect the TV to the net
    2. get the true money card as mentioned
    3. locate the HDPrime.tv channel (on the internet) and , what? use the numbers on the money card to subscribe over the internet for a month at 380THB
    4. watch the TV!

Does that system also show the Thai tv? (crucial for her)
if you subscribe to the service, can you view more than 1 channel at a time? e.g. im watching the footie on tv1 and shes on with Lakorn drama on TV2 and all from 1 subscription?

At this point you have all probably realised how little I actually know about this... maybe some of my questions have obvious answers.

Assuming i try this, and i think i will, i would still need some form of box for the long term wish-list? i think so, anyway....

for example, maybe dumb question - is there anything that a box will provide that does not come from HDprime, aside from the signal type?

For the past 4 or 5 years I've been using Pulse TV. Cost is 10,000 baht a year, and that gives me every UK channel you can think of including all of the Sky Channels, BT Sports etc, all of which have 24 hour catch up. There's also a huge library of movies and TV shows, which include ones that have only just been released. They also have an on-line 'chat' support service that operates during normal working hours.

The package gives you 4 connections, for which currently I have one to the main TV box, and one each via their app to my computer and phone. The system works well if using my phone on 4G for example. I have a TV in an outside bar area which only has power going to it, and I use my phone to 'screen mirror' to that if I'm watching football outside.

Here's the link to their website:

Pulse-TV – Watch TV Shows, Movies

Just read your response to LuLu. Yes, it also includes Thai TV channels.

    TD,
Just for your own validation, Once you are hooked up through your router and comp etc. You should check your speed. I use this site

Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test

I have found they sell you a high Upload/Download speed pkg but when you actually test it, its not even close.

BTW, A smart TV with Wifi or Bluetooth is the best option. I have a Samsung

    Good Luck

    Hey JPPR2... thanks for that.

I did a speed test once the connection was made:

Looks about right, unless I am mis-reading that?

    here is the router too:

Yeah...I know it's probably overkill but i believe in future-proofing wherever possible and this one cost me nothing, thanks to the airline!

I just took a look at that too, thanks PAG.

Another option to consider, once i get there, in April

I am guessing some people go for boxes other than this one, and the LuLu option are for the bells n whistles? 4k etc.?

You are golden. That's about what I have up our place, A tad more. Never any delays watching my US sports and I can DL a movie sometimes in 5 to 6 minutes.

I do not stream many shows, mostly Download as I like no commercials and not flipping through channels of utter mind numbing garbage.

    Pretty much.

I have computers connected to the TVs here (WiFi mouse and keyboards), I find it much better than using the Operating System of the Smart TV to connect to and use the internet.

Use an email address to make an account on HD Prime.

Then get a 100thb True Money slip from the 7-11.

Click on Payment on HDP, select True Money, enter the code.

Then go to Packages. Select the one you want - 3 Days all Channels.

    And off ya go.

The whole internet-tv thing has a learning curve but the bottom line is, if you can use an Android or Apple phone you're already smart enough to figure out watching tv over the net. I had True Visions and local Cable tv, got rid of them both and only have internet tv now. Way more content than anyone could ever hope for, it's great!.

Mag box+iptv for 3k a year...which is basically Sky tv full package+ ppv, all movies, sports, porn etc from the guy who services most of Pattaya's sports bars, is the go.

I know another guy who will do you that with a huge video club to boot which is basically all torrents uploaded straight away.
He also does a Thai package on top of all that for the discerning gent who loves his Thai wife which will set you back 18k a year.

I use the Pattaya guy for 3k a year, let the wife use her tablet for Lakorn and download my own torrents

Torrenting will take you seconds on your connection

They will supply you the boxes too and give you a free trial

The boxes work worldwide too, except the expensive Thai one which is on its own dedicated server

My Minix box was like 7+ years old and the guys recommended I updated to this recently:

    MAGICSEE N5 MAX Android Box 4/64 GB S905X2 Dual-Wifi BT 4.1 Android 9.0 4K เร็วกว่า แรงกว่า ลื่นไหลกว่าที่คิด | Lazada.co.th

About 1600 Baht, couldn't be happier and it came with about 12 free apps for live tv/movies/series already installed.

^I get by without rhe wireless keyboard ok but yeah, it should be added that a wireless mouse is a must have with one of these boxes. They're only a couple of hundred Baht these days though. I was surprised how much Minix boxes were in your link, I paid about 7k 7+ years ago for mine so they've come way down in price.

Dill - Ta very much, like!

so.. that also sounds good but is this the route where at any time the whole thing , err..'stops' when the authorities, etc catch up and close it down?

not saying i will not consider every option but i need continuity, and she needs lakorn (goddammit)

re my original wish list... youtube video on here or is that direct from t'internet? 4k content? I'm guessing a more specialised box is needed

It did go down last year for two weeks when they busted that Italian place full of servers.
The 10k and 18k package from the other guy didn't and has been running for about 4 years now.

Your TV has multiple HDMI inputs so you can have more than one box connected.
Buy a GMZ/Grammy box for 1500baht and a 60cm dish for 1000baht and she'll have all the Thai channels and a lot of other crap.
It's a one time cost, no monthly payments. Well worth it to keep your missus happy.

I already told her.. she is going to learn to like football and documentaries!

so.. dish of the day and all is good with Lady thailand? xlnt!

What i have to keep remembering is... for all these boxes...and TVs... I need to multiply it all up for the number of TV's in the place.

of course, i don't need the Thai stuff in the office, but i do need the animal por.... documentaries. she don't need football in the Buddha room but she does need the Lakorn in the toilet, etc etc

....but kitchen, living room, outside under the house in Zone 2...we will surely need it all. (but I'm holding all the controllers)
