My father, in the UK, handed over to two of my brothers all powers to act from him. As he aknowlwdged his mind was going. Family was consulted and along with neighbours of him signed off.

They took control of all his responsibilities.

His will was already known by his four sons. One brother was made the executor.

A simple, regular occurrence in the UK.

Seems to me, live in a small village, mostly jungle area, aging population and they die at home in their own bed with dignity. Most check out of the hospitals and come home to die with family. Can hear at dog bark from a kilometer away and never hear anyone screaming in pain. District nurse comes around daily, no shortage of morphine, but they don't seem to need it.

Everyone dies Terry, no matter how much insurance you have, an extra year or 2 is of little importance. You can just hope you go to bed and not wake up one morning.

If your fear is a painful death, get a gas bottle of nitrogen, or helium, plastic bag and you will sleep forever.

Had 3 friends die last year, cancer, guess I am at that age, same as you, death is knocking at doors. All 3 were just feeling a bit off, went to the doctor. One dead in 48 hours, second one dead in 2 weeks, 3rd one lasted 3 months.
They should have stayed home, they would have died anyway, without the worry.

As I have posted before, only go to a doctor to get sown up, not interested in health checks, when it's time to go, so sad too bad.

To be honest I don't believe he knew where he was, or who we were, for months previously.

Absolutely right. Some people are obsessed with med insurance like some how its going to save them. We all die.. And as you noted, a few extra years after say 65 or 70 is of little importance. I just hope these guys all worried about it lived a life early on and are not thinking somehow later in life they will catch up on the things they didn't do. Just doesn't work that way.

I am same. Wife and I did however do a physical check up last year, wife wanted too so I went long with it to see. All was in range or close so that's good enough for me. I think most westerners have drank the Pharmaceutical Kool Aid. I mean FFS, I was just back in the states and every damn commercial on TV was about a new med they have for people and then they list the new disease. Then during the day is all about life insurance for old folks. They just inundate the population with fear and illness. When your time is up...its up.

Yup, wisdom, all that matters is quality of life, had the discussion with the wife.

Forced her, and myself of course, to the full regime of preventative medicine testing and procedures. Ton of money spent in premiums, deductibles, copays, etc. Mid-life times, gainfully employed back in the USA, medical insurance company paid - real figures, good medical insurance, company paid USD $900/mo. plus employee paying $300/mo. So, the medical insurance company received $1,200/mo. per employee. Employee also had copays and deductibles to "supplement" if someone got sick.

So, USA, as working folk the insurance premiums came out to USD $14,400/annum per person. Add in copays and deductibles if someone gets sick.

Today we carry a Cigna global Expat Insurance Plan covering us both. Maximum of USD $1M/sickness. Two persons, premiums are a bit more than USD $5k/annum.

With a $5k deductible. No outpatient so not qualified by Thailands mandatory insurance criteria (also not a Thai company).

So, if either of use get "sick", we shell out about $10k (premium plus deductible).

As we age the premiums will increase - past five years been going up 10 to 15% per year. Will it ever become "cost-prohibitive" ?

Well, certainly, at some point in time. Hey, when your numbers up your numbers up and spending copious quantities of money to stay alive in a pained "no quality of life" situation or scenario makes absolutely no sense at all.

Why wake up to another day of pain?

Anyway - full blown medical directives in both Thailand and America with the proper attorneys in both countries with Do Not Resuscitate directives.

One interesting point - in the USA mid-2019 medical directives our attorney added a stipulation stating that our actual signature is required to alter from the directive. As per his opinion - several cases in the US of family members challenging medical (DNR) directives in a court of law - thereby legally prolonging the suffering of afflicted persons.

Anyway - discussions with the wife specific to "end-of-life". When it comes pull the plug. No attempt allowed at all to prolong life - See you On The Other Side.

When im back to Perth ill get all my checks done as per usual and i do this so if theres anything going down the Doc can hopefully get on top of it before shit gets worse.

The reason for this is my good self wants to keep sucking the good oil out of life and power on doing good shit.

You tossers who stick ya head in the sand and do not have regular checks can keep on doing that.

    Good luck fukers.

Not quite right: How about e.g. appendix - do you want to die in huge pain instead of having it cut out and enjoy another 20 years here?

There are many examples what can come up (mainly inside of the body of an old man, prostate, etc). Mostly it's no problem to have it healed - however with quite expensive treatments, surgeries - and off you go for another many years at TD Todays' Posts...

What I don't understand terry is why do you stay in Bangkok, when you are in Thailand?
If its so bad, there are many other places in Thailand to chose from that are much better surely.
And as you so often tell us you are cashed up so being able to afford to stay somewhere nicer should not be a problem.

That being said because you are cashed up you do have that choice.
Where are you fook off to? Back to WA?
Every time I go back there to visit I look forward to coming back here.
Too many rules etc. for me.

FIL was stripping side shoots off a branch, he inadvertently cut his big toe. Resulting in it hanging on with a few shreds of skin. He was about to continue when I said to my wife he should go and get it stitched back on. Nobody else seemed at all perturbed, Pa wanted to finish his work.

After some discussion the family agreed with my suggestion. I took him to our local clinic where they cleaned the wound and offered him a local injection to reduce the pain. He said no thanks and they stitched it back on.

He still has two big toes and carries 50kg loads of Durian fruit up and down slopes all day. Slopes that I have to crawl up with no load, as they're to steep. He does have a pair of cheap, plastic, slip on shoes that are much more adapted to the local conditions though.

I'm not so sure the younger Thais will be as tough.

    exactly.

health insurance is no guarantee against death from disease, but it will cover you for the often expensive treatment of curable ailments before they become painful, debilitating and life threatening.

all this head in the sand "just put me to bed with a morphine drip" is quite laughable.

I actually think that punters who do not keep on top of there checks are terminally fuking stupid.

The medical system now is so advanced that they can stop shit in its tracks before it progresses into full on life threatening illness.

Cancer these days is not a death sentence, many cancers are treatable and i know many punters who are still alive today because of early diagnosis and treatment.

Take that shit on board fukers .

Well Tax, I fully agree and up to a certain age insurance makes sense. I absolutely think it is best to have med insurance, especially when younger as those ailments can likely be cured and as you stated, go on about life. Then you reach an age when you sadly have to spend a shit ton more for coverage because they know your are a risk of major ailments. When does it have diminishing returns? As many have stated, Its about the quality of life, not slowly being dissected to keep you alive and all that money spent to medical businesses to do it.

I have always had med insurance and do now. Its quite basic. But at some point the time will come when I will let it go and what happens, happens. I have the resources to cover all basic to intermediate type medical ailments.

In the end, this is all about choices. I respect everyone's opinion on the subject. What works for one, may not for another but I know I am not going to stress over what I might get or have happen in the coming years. I am on the 3rd segment of life so just gonna let it play out.

    ^

its one of the many gambles we must take in life.

i have a couple of health conditions that although not life threatening need monitoring and i am glad that my insurance covers this.

i am no longer full time in thailand and so take out travel insurance for the time we spend here. its a lot cheaper than full time cover sourced in thailand and covers my pre existing conditions. thankfully, whilst in the uk the government system, although clunky and at times inefficient, covers everything. having worked in the system i know how to push my case when necessary and pre-empt the the problems of access before they occur.

for me, the most important cover is re-repatriation to the uk should something serious occur, once stabilised i would not want to be treated in a thai hospital and hope that the insurance company would deal with my case properly and get me back to the uk rather than leave me in the care of the doctors and accountants who run the thai system. wishful thinking maybe knowing insurance companies, and i am under no illusions, but those are the choices and gambles we make and take.
