What do you do if your dog has cornered a snake? And how do you treat a pet's snake b-eastern-brown-snake-billie-data-jpg

About six weeks ago, I heard the familiar bark of my dog coming from the lawn outside the kitchen window.
    Billie — a border-collie blue-cattle-dog cross — has a really distinct bark when she's rounded up a snake.

It's one loud, singular bark, repeated each time she jumps toward the snake and then lunges back to avoid its strike.
We live on the outskirts of Brisbane's west, surrounded by thick bushland, and I've been hearing that bark a lot lately.

A few nights before, she'd cornered a brown tree-snake under the house. That time I'd managed to grab her, giving the snake a chance to get away. Two weeks before that it was a similar story with a green tree-snake.

But as I took the two steps down from the deck into the yard, a big eastern brown snake was reared back and striking repeatedly, clearly distressed by the barking dog in its face.
Out of instinct, I called to Billie to leave the snake alone.
Distracted, she turned to me as the snake struck again.

It narrowly missed, but then I was unsure what to do: if I called to her again, the distraction might leave her open to getting bitten.
If I left her, she was still in danger of killing the snake and getting bitten in the process.

Interesting article as snakes and dogs are abundant in both countries

I do the similar as you. I remove the dog from the scene and then I guide the snake off of property with a long stick. No need to kill it.

Not having a dig, but were you able to identify the snake?

I've had snake issues in the past (not in Thailand), once at night within 100m of a nursery/kindergarten, but both times had the advantage of knowing they were poisonous and had to be killed rather than escorted onto someone else's property or common grounds.

Unless you know your snake is not poisonous and their best effort is a bite, why would you guide it away leaving it free to strike elsewhere?

I used to live on acreage on the outskirts of Brisbane's west, surrounded by thick bushland.

I had 2 staffordshire bull terriers, they slept in the laundry (to stop them killing themselves by biting cane toads).

One night I woke about 2am hearing them barking, I thought it was probably just a gecko and yelled at them to shut-up.

They were quiet just a moment before they started up again.

I got out of bed and found that they had bailed up a brown snake in the shower. It was just trying to get away from them, so I just grabbed them both by the collars and got them out of there.

Not being very brave, I thought to myself, "What the fuck do I do now?"

Anyway I had a hessian bag that I thought would be good if I could get the snake into, but had no idea how I was going to do that.

I put the bag on the floor while I thought what to do, and to my surprise, the snake just crawled straight into the bag.

Beauty.. I just picked up the bag, twisted it to stop it getting out and took it for a drive further out towards Lake Manchester and released it.

Three of our dogs do that distinctive high pitched, persistent bark when they surround a snake (or centipedes and scorpions). That's what I want them to do. Then I can catch the snake and release it elsewhere. Or in the case of venomous pit vipers I've always taken them to Korat zoo.

The fourth dog, our old bitch, just goes silent and attacks without hesitation. She's killed many rat snakes, and on one occasion a pit viper. There's not a lot I can do to stop her, as usually the first we know about it is when we find the dead snake.

If ever we get a really nasty snake like a cobra or krait it will probably be her undoing. Thankfully we haven't had one yet.

Exactly, word for word re our dog.
1/2 Rotty, 1/2 Husky. Boris. Absolutely fearless.
The Thai dogs we have will bark and keep a distance, Boris just goes straight in and kills.
Had a Python recently in the garden, first one i've ever seen in the wild.
It was too strong for him and escaped up a tree. We had to call the local snake catcher crew.

We have a lot of spitting cobras, not very nice snakes... You lot are nicer to snakes than I or the Thai FiL - in the 18 or so years since I've known the wife, they have at least 1 part-bangkeow to kill snakes. The SiL has a huge and most impressive half-Bangeow, she also breeds chickens which run free, so she gets a lot of snakes, and reckons that her dog has killed at least a couple of cobras a week for the last 10 years - there must be a lot of snakes out there!

Our animal eco-system is just being renewed: the FiL rescues a wild little female cat who keeps the rats and mice at bay, and we have a couple of (now) 4 month old part-Bbangkeows, so hopefully that'll keep the snakes away.

The bangkeows, as I'm sure you've seen, are good with snakes, they bark, try to get them into the open, then run around them and tire them out before ripping them apart. Bye bye snake; I don't miss them...

Stay back and start thinking about a nice new belt or where to bury the dog

Just because it's venomous doesn't mean it needs to be killed. The majority of snake bites to humans aren't deadly due to the fact they're 'dry bites'.
Plus I don't live in a built up area and releasing the snake outside of my property is unlikely to put any ones life in danger. That is if it is poisonous and identifying the snake is likely to take time which I don't have after being confronted.

The dog is a bit weary of snakes nowadays, having been hit by a spitting cobra from around 3 metres. He was trying to protect Mrs Troy who had disturbed the snake's hide. It was a large male and wasn't going anywhere so had to be killed. The dog had his eyes washed repeatedly and went to sleep for a couple of days but was fine afterwards.

The dogs don't bark unless the snake is dangerous and they need help. Usually it is a banded krait, which we all leave well alone. The dogs may be stupid but not that stupid.

I always let my dogs finish it off, if they found it then they have first dib on it. I'm usually too late anyway, snake is usually dead when I arrive.

Seemed like a fitting place to put this.

Tonight Yogi wouldn't stop barking... and after yelling at him a couple of times (I assumed it was the neighbour's dog setting him off) he continued, so I went to investigate.

All the dogs got in on the action...

But for some reason Yogi wouldn't leave it alone. A strange looking snake.

It took a while to identify, but I'm pretty sure it was a common pipe snake. I've never seen one this big before, it must have been around 60cm long.

But placid and harmless, and easy to catch. This one went back outside the garden wall... for it's own safety!

We try not to let the dogs do the finishing off.
One can tell the difference between dog or rat.
The young bankeos hold back for a bit and I'll then go and grab it and offer it board and lodging next door.
We've found that if we're late on the scene a really good dousing of Optrex or similar seems to sort the strike sprays out,. Clears the eyes and generally sorts out the problems.

I have a pair of long sleeved welders gloves and a 2 meter length a wiggly steel, at the end of which there is a bit of a curly end to which they seem happy go for and get curled up in. Grab the head and into the bag, tie it up and wait for the wife to tell me what to do wit it.

They're generally let loose in the hills but occasionally become the main course.

When I found this guy cornered by the dog under the shoe cabinet in the car port, I put the dog inside and calmly started to roost him out to freedom with a broom, thinking he was a rat snake which we saw plenty of. It suddenly reared up and flared its crown. Knowing it just turned into a deadly game, I had the wife call a local gardner to help me. We pinned it with bamboo poles until we had it dispatched. Man, it was pissed off, and it made noises like a screaming cat that had all the neighbors over to watch. No way we were going to let a cobra cruise around with a lot of kids in the hood.

Thought I left the snakes back in Thailand but the dog (which we brought to the USA form Thailand) was in the tall weeds the other day cocking her head like she had something. I went up to her and looked over her head to see a good sized rattlesnake coiled up looking at us, and then it started rattling. Wrestling 95 pounds of dog away from the snake was a chore as she wanted at it. At least the wife got to hear a rattlesnake which is a plus I guess....
