    International drivers permit

Is an international drivers permit required in the US or can I use my Thai car and motorcycle license there. I want to be able to rent a car when I get there so need to know if it's possible with only the Thai license? Thanks for any help.

I know the process to get the permit here and the cost is 550 baht and 2 pics, signed copy of passport, Thai license and an affidavit of residence. I've looked on Google but don't know for sure.

Thai license is ok. What I use on visits to California.
    Some states require IDP.

Depends on the state. Last visit to the US I checked with New Jersey and Pennsylvania. I would advise you to get one. Pennsylvania doesn't require an International Permit (but an English translation is required). Thai licenses have English translation.

    New Jersey:

    • You may use your country's driver license as proof of driving experience if you have an International Driver Permit issued by your country or if your country is a member of the United Nations Convention on Road Traffic and your license is translated into English by a consulate or an MVC approved translator.

    5. Can I drive in Pennsylvania with my Foreign Driver's License?
Individuals who possess a valid foreign driver's license from their country are authorized to drive in Pennsylvania for up to one year from their date of entry into the United States, or upon expiration of their foreign license, whichever comes first. International driving permits are strongly recommended, but not required.

    Eli,

Been home the last 3 years in a row, rented a car each time. No need for the international permit anymore. The new Thai drivers license has your name in English, have you PP with you as well.

I got the drivers permit done after getting my affidavit of residence from my local amphur. Cost was 505 baht for the permit and both car and motorcycle are stamped in the book. I would rather be safe than sorry as I intend to rent a car for a short time when I first get back.
