    Do you make a difference.

Many years ago, I came to this village, we were living in Australia at the timev in Thailand we lived with the father and mother.
Sons kid, mother and father took off to greener pastures, kid left to the grandparents house,
Now the Father in law was a Kanem, boss of 8 villages, he's doinig 5 years in the Ubon monkey house at the moment'

My kids look at the dumped kid as a big sister, girl sat her Uni enterance exams last week, got 2 places, for chemical engerneering, kind of proud.

A little here or there can make a differance long term.

So you should be, well done. Its years of emotional investment but worth it - they'll never forget.

I have two nieces currently living with us in Australia while studying. Have organised various working holidays for 3 sister in laws and their husbands. Currently setting up a research farm in Thailand to offer local farmers a different view of the farming game. Lots of fun for us and plenty of upside for them as well.
News is what someone, somewhere is trying to suppress - everything else is just advertising.

Took on a young child when she was about three months old. The girlfriend’s niece. The girlfriend eventually got full custody of the child and became her legal mother.

I split with the mum when the child was about 10 years old, but I still took care the child. Sent her to Australia for university where she got a degree in business management and returned to Thailand to work for CP Group.

She’ll be turning 25 next month. I have an excellent relationship with her and surprisingly also with her mother. I have to say that I am very proud of her and she brings a lot of enjoyment to my life.

Sometimes I used to wonder whether my being here made any difference to the wife's family.
So I decided to ask my sister in law and I must say I was a little surprised by her answer.

The thing she told that made the biggest difference was that we had a car so when or if someone (their kids) got sick they could get to the hospital easily.

My wife has no kids and no family (well none that speak to her - she looked after the parents while they were dying and got no help from siblings).
After many years of NGO work she wasn't cashed-up when we met and her financial future wasn't looking good.
But now she will at least own a house in Oz when I fall off the perch and with any luck be a citizen and have a pension.

Another aspect is that she’s very smart and a bit out-there by Thai standards so its easier in Australia, especially as I’m a bit harmlessly mad and not much of her crazy bothers me ...

So the difference that the op made was that he encouraged his family to be on good terms with an influential local?

    What a heart of gold.

Isn't it that his immediate family took in a kid that was as good as abandoned, and she's now been accepted onto 2 university's chemical engineering courses?

Could be wrong on that, Jim's posts often need a bit of clarification as to just wtf he's saying.

The concept of helping someone is an alien one to simple Sybil probably explains why he has no friends.

I make a difference in helping motorcycle drivers ride more politely. Because I don't automatically move out of the way when they tear up the wrong side of the road at me in order to bet traffic, I wait till the last minute then flash high beams and blast the horn, given more than a couple a deserved heart attack.
