Saw a lot in the Khon Kaen mall but that’s to be expected I guess.
Saw a surprising number in Mahasarakham too despite it being a smaller city in bumfuck nowhere. One was a woman.
Interestingly most avoided eye contact or acknowledgement- possibly the red latex devil suit I wear in public is confronting.
Most did not seem to be outstanding specimens of western humanity.

Given that the country plays host to over 2 million Lao, Burmese and Cambodian migrants, I rather think 120,000 western grunters is of little statistical interest but somehow the Thai still manage to cite us as a reason for their racist and stupid policies.

Some... think it out, it is a very easy thing to vacation in Thailand. It is a difficult and/or troublesome thing to stay in Thailand "long-term" unless you are well cashed up.

The easy out is the Thai Elite Visa - a cost prohibitive method unless you are, in a word, "rich".

Meeting age/marriage/family criteria still requires a moderate "sum" of money or income and rigmarole to qualify.

Summed up, most foreigners who reside in Thailand "long-term" do so for family reasons, for retirees - realize that many, many, many - such as myself, who are here on retiree visas are actually here for family, retiree visa is easier to qualify if you meet the age requirement. But, there are foreigners who did decide to retire in Thailand - they are already here and did retire earlier, things were "different" then so the analysis has changed.

Today, when an expat analyzes their options, the strength of the Thai Baht, is some cases will financially prevent a foreigner from staying here. Also, in some cases, the immigration requirements coupled with the strength of the Thai Baht may well make a foreigner decide it is just not worth the hassle.

So, to answer your question, yes, in some cases, Expats are finding Thailand to expensive to stay in now.

The Bosnians in the former Yugoslavia and the Tutsi in Rwanda could chime in on that.
