Shopping for an SUV ,Pickup truck or MPV

Used to have a Colorado pickUp truck, Sold it when I went back to the US to work, with the thinking that we will rent when visiting in Thailand. We ended coming back to Thailand more often, and staying longer, than we thought , especially my wife, and renting became an expensive proposition.
So we bought a 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage to drive when we are there.
By The end of this year I will be retiring and spending most of our time in Thailand , we will keep the Mirage for around the town driving but we will be looking for a more substantial vehicles for longer trips, and for more passengers
We are looking at SUV's, (Pajero, Trailblazer top choice so far) ,, MPV,s , I like Toyota Sienta and Michu Expander but weak for the weight IMO 1.5 L about 105 hp engines BRV and Mobilio also 1.5L but develop 117 hp
which might be more viable. And have not settled on a four door pickup truck yet, they all seem the same for the most,, part but seem to be the most bang for your buck.
In another forum while reading a thread concerning this, someone mentioned a CRV AWD that he bought for 1,4 mill baht (47,000 usd!!)
I just helped my sister in the US negotiate and purchase a LX 4D AWD 2.4L CRV for a litle over $25,000 (800,000 bht) I will be damned if I will pay double for it in Thailand. but that seems to be the case with all SUV,s
So it looks like , in the end, it will be another Pickup truck or a MPV .

Avanza is a nice Van,Also like the smaller Sienta because it is front wheel drive and drives like a car but I am concerned about the 1.5L 108 hp engine , and I am considering it along with the Hyundai H1 and Inova but if I am going to spend that kind of money , why not go for the Pajero

I bought a pajero sport in Nov 2017. It's a good enough drive on roads and mud tracks and takes a decent load. It is a little more hassle switching to 4H and 4L, compared to my old Toyota or land rover, but that could just be me not used to electric Vs mechanical switching. Fuel economy is good and you don't feel you have to go fast...easy to control the car rather than letting it take over.

The new Ertiga has being getting good reviews, and certainly looks nice, and will not break the bank. I don't particularly like the touch screen that IMO looks like an afterthought, but is not a deal breaker.
Again I am concerned about the 1.5L motor that produces only 105 hp .
I own a 1.5L 108 hp manual transmission toyota that weights 916 kgs ,the 108 hp is barely adequate and it is always empty except for me (drive it to work and back) .
The new Ertiga weights 1170 kgs (254 kg more) and develops 105 hp. I am concerned when loaded will not be able to get out of its own way.
Anyone owns a new Ertiga, Sienta, Expander, Mobilo? would love to hear a report addressing the above concern.

Cars are crazy expensive in Thailand, they tax them hard. Pick-ups aren't taxed as heavily as SUV's due to the agricultural nature of Thailand, so the Gov't gives farm vehicles a less eye-watering tax rate. You can see this at the showroom when you price (for examples) a Hilux vs Fortuner or Triton vs Pajero which are exactly the same vehicle, but one has a tray-back while the other has a roof that extends all the way to the rear of the car. So it makes sense to buy a pick-up, put a cap or space-cab on the back to enclose it, and keep a good few hundred thousand in your pocket!. If you do bite the bullet and go SUV I highly recommend you take a CX-5 for a test drive, they're in a whole different league to a pick-up truck (with or without a covered rear) when it comes to ride quality, stability/safety, and driving enjoyment.

And if the prices of Japanese cars have you clutching your chest, FFS don't start pricing real cars from places like Germany!. At a guess they'd be 3 to 4 times what they cost in the States for the same model, but with a lower spec here!.

I am with you, I wasn't overly excited about coughing up the cash as well but the SUV suits our lifestyle better with all the traveling and activities we do. Like you I have been looking at all of them and the Pajero Sport ticks all the boxes, is well appointed with lots of features and the price is better when compared to others. Plus I really like the 100,000km warranty and they will toss in a ton of extras from the dealer. I sat in all 7 seaters vehicles and the 3rd row seats on all is not really functional for long drives with passengers unless they are midgets but that not why we want one, we want the covered space to toss our crap in.

Absolutely agree. These econo bucket style vehicles are really dangerous going over mountain passes. They can barely keep pace on flat land and that's with just 2 people. Toss in 4 and a gear and its gonna get ran over. Now if you do not really ever go anywhere and want a econo grocery getter, its probably Ok.

That said I understand we all have varying needs and live very different lifestyles. I use my truck a lot and regularly load it up with numerous things and a bed cover would be a huge inconvenience for me. For those that do not haul or move anything, a bed cover/cap can work and be a very viable option and as Headworx says, save you a few bucks. Really depends on the individual

When it is all said and done I will probably buy a pickup truck, but I hate the rear bed cap, for me it obstructs visibility. I have seen these bed covers that you can either lift the back to gain access

I picked up a Nissan Terra a couple of months back.

Paid around 1.35 million for the middle of the range model.

Lots of bells and whistles and a proper 7 seater.

Not a bad drive. Don't like the stereo though, bit difficult to use.
