Anyone had a Dog Put Down?

One of my dogs was in a fight a few days ago and shot. I've grown to love the little bastard, who was given to us free. Something like a mix between a Pit Bull and a Poodle, fearless but small.

He's been in the Vets for 4 night and due to stay two more, costing me 25k baht to date. When speaking to the vet, he said that he would never put a dog down and he doesn't know anyone that would. I don't care about the cash but the dog is 7 years old and if he's suffering, it might be the best thing to do.

Any future male dog I get will get its ball cut off to stop them running away and getting into trouble.

Vets here prefer to let an animal suffer than to compromise their hypocritical 'moral' standards.

I agree to a certain extent, but I prefer to remain humble on the meaning of karma.

Then do nothing and let the dog die. That's the karma perfect way.

What Thai is going to cut off his own revenue stream?

    I'd watch Old Yeller.

I've had many. I've had to put down several.

What do you want? A simple way for someone else to take responsibility for putting your dog down? Whether you hit the poor thing over the head with a hammer, let it starve to death or inject drugs into your friend, you're responsible.

Personally, I've shot them when the time came. It's what you owe them after all they've given to you. That's from horses to dogs.

I don't think there is a need to get into an argument over this, pets and how you part ways is always very difficult with so much emotional investment - but Topper is right Chalky its your call.

Anyone who's had and loved pets knows its the hardest decision, but ultimately as mentioned and for my 5 pence worth i've always taken the approach that it'd want to avoid their suffering and set aside you own pain at having to let them go. So if it looks bleak or you don't think you'll get the treatment which gives an outcome where they regain their quality of life - i would make the hard choice and put the animal down.

An old farmer bloke with land next to ours would smash them over the head with a shovel and throw them into the septic tank.

Not sure if it was for pleasure or what, but as kids we generally stayed away from him.

    If that helps.

    Was that in Wales?

If the dogs suffering then go with your instinct.

Vets just care about bleeding you dry.

I was under the impression that Thai vets are not allowed to put animals down. Anyone know for sure?

Same here, when my Beagle (his name was Howler for obvious reasons to those who know beagles) whom I had from a baby ,was old and so sick he could not hold food down and barely knew where he was or walk, I bought him a roasted chicken , gave him some knowing that he would be throwing it up in a hour, took him for a walk behind our property, and while walking with him I shot him behind the head with a 22 pistol , He never knew he died, as far as he knows he is still walking with me through that field.
He gave me 14 years of love and it was the least I could do for him. Still miss him.

    555. I had 2 Beagles. I bust out laughing because the only way to understand your comment is to have had a few.

That said, I have had to put quite a few dogs down both personally and at the Vet. Its never easy but when they are suffering its more painful to watch. Its a humane thing to do. This is why I fully support Euthanasia for humans. No one wants to watch anyone or anything suffer.

    Best of luck OP

I sympathise with you, Chalky. A couple of weeks ago I had to put my lovely collie down. Her back legs had gone on her and at 12-1/2 years old the vet said there was not much that could be done for her. The vet euthanased her then and there and she is now buried in my back yard. It is hard. I loved that dog.

I had a Retriever that took ill with kidney failure. The vet would not put the dog down even though I requested it a few times. The dog eventually died a long painful death. Next time I'd go borrow a gun, knowing the right person helps, and shoot the dog.

    Hi,
After many years of browsing Teakdoor, as a hopeless dog lover this thread has finally motivated me to join. I spend a lot of time, effort and expense helping the dogs in my area - feeding, finding homes for puppies and getting the females speyed. Daft maybe, but I can't help myself.

Anyway, 13 years ago when we moved to Korat we took on two puppies off the street, brother and sister. Last year the boy was diagnosed with lymphoma, he was off his food and in obvious pain. Our Vet in Korat had no problem putting him down and it went as well and peacefully as is possible. Our boy is now buried under one of our mango trees. If anyone wants details of our Vet I'm only too happy to pass them on.

Is that the second post on the thread that's actually helpful?

    [QUOTE=ChalkyDee;3929300]Do you have a dog?[/QUOTE
its well known on all the forums that my life and my wife's were given to looking after our beloved dog.
right from the first ever visit by a vet I asked him?if ever my boy was either in an accident or ill would he put him to sleep, before he [vet] could answer I said there would be a big brown envelope.that seems to work with all vets,i am afraid they will all or 99% of them will use them as ATM machine's and keep them alive even if they are past the point of no return.
my heart goes out to you CHALKY and your beloved.
