Child's passport

Question for american citizens who've had a child born here during marriage to Thai woman. Applied for SS recently,will receive soon. My daughter here has a Thai passport. Will that suffice for the SS credit or will I have to get her a US passport? I'm sending the package for her credit soon and will have to send an additional fee for a US passport for her. If anyone has received credit for their child with a Thai passport,let me know. Or if you did have to get their US passport. It doesn't say anywhere on the site the need for one,only if you wanted to also get one

I don't know for sure, Fred, as my spouse and kids are all dual citizens. But, I fully agree with Luigi - get the kid a US passport and Social Security card. It makes life easier.

She has a Thai passport, I was just wondering if that was good enough for my SS credit for her,or if indeed needed a US passport. Manila doesn't answer the phones when I call,so I have to wait again for the same woman I left messages to to answer my question.

Can't answer your "specific" question.

Part of the problem with specific information is things do change and the information of what happened a couple of years ago may be invalid.

Anyway, she is your daughter so nationality shouldn't impact that - BUT, I was told (right or wrong - I don't know but'll find out in a couple of years) that since my wife never got her American citizenship she will be penalized when she collects her "earned" social security benefits. Something about a "fee" assessed to non-citizen non-resident social security benefit recipients.

Again, each and every situation has specific details that may alter results/resolutions. In your shoes I would apply for her (your daughters) passport so if the issue did come up you could honestly say "it is in the works" and not "oh, OK I'll do something about it".

My daughter was born in Fiji but I immediately registered her birth with the Australian embassy and eventually got her an Ozzy passport. Best move ever. She's got her Fijian birth cert and heritage, so can live there if she wants, but full rights to live in Oz or NZ. Currently living in Oz. Best of both worlds.
You never want to restrict your kids to a 3rd world country.
