Whatever Fluke says....I'm gonna' have to go with that.

He hasn't steered me wrong yet.

So far I have an ex-hooker g/f of my estranged son who I intend to cut all contact and support from, no real friends, a penchant for sex with unconscious partners, a replacement son and a freak ball for a g/f who is convinced that I'm a ladyboy fugger, among other things and a string of virtual haters who really would understand me and accept me if only they could truly see my plight(s).

That is quite a topsy-tervy typical Teakdoor way of looking at things .
The Teakdoor where people are furious at the Police.....for doing what they are there for .
The Teakdoor where people think TESLA giving people free electric for their cars is a rip-off.
The Teakdoor where people cal others liars because they say they didnt delete photos of themselves from Teakdoor......even though no photos re ever unloaded
Teakdoor posters whose levels of debate arise to "Fukk off you lying c u n t, whilst telling lies themselves.
Teakdoor posters who lie and continue lying, until it becomes a reality on Teakdoor
"You fukkin fat pikey chav scum.you cant write Thai properly"

Odd as probably the whitest non albino in Lanna Ive been driving/riding around C Mai and Doi Sakhet over 20 years and no cop has ever asked to see my Docs

Up in C Rai my wife and a Swedish pals wife got a pull and the the once over , very funny the Chiang Saen officers no doubt suspected us of importing Shan grans for a dodgy movie .Swedos mrs was well miffed as had hiso airs , my mrs thought it all hilarious

If on a non O as others say its not hard just tedious and I think 300 naht when IO got my 5 year licence , may have gone up since.
In C rai we had to pull strings and judge when the rabit jumped an eyesight test and film all in Thai so they let me take a Leo break, all very polite low key and quite entertaining to see how its done.of course the drunk or 11 year old with no lights will have no insurance so I generally keep off rds at night or fly/drive door to door, an airport taxi is only 1500 while all way to bangkok DMuang for 4 is less than a plane

Taxis and tuktuks are dirt cheap so why bother doubt Ive done more than 400km this year in LOS with me driving, other great thing about a sober chauffeur you can enjoy a cocktail in backseat watching a movie and be dropped off at check in

    AO, maybe things have changed.

I've never had or owned 'residence' and have first my 1 year license and now my 5 year ones (bike and car).

I got the 1 year license about 4 years ago.

aging vadge doesn't know what he's on about.

What the rules say and the reality are very different. Know 2 guys that have gotten their first 1 yr license in the last year, one on a Tourist Visa, one on a Visa Exempt 30 day stamp. One in Chatujak DoLT and one in Nonthaburi DoLT.

Ao is correct. You have to be long stay to obtain a Thai driving licence. It must be obtained within 3 months from entry into Thailand to validate your vehicle insurance. That is if you have/get insurance.

In order to qualify for a Thai driving license, applicants must be at least 18 years old, in good physical and mental health and hold a valid non-immigration visa. Although applicants must show that they are either living and working in the country or are living in Thailand on a retirement visa, some people reported that they can make a Thai driving license with a tourist visa.

I'm not disputing the validity of that but this being Thailand it's also rather, *ahem*, fluid.

I didn't bother getting my Thai license for years owing to pure and utter laziness on my part and was involved in a minor accident.

Insurance assessor came; did all the inspection and paperwork; and then asked for my license to complete it. At this point I made the delicate 'suppose I didn't have a license...?' inquiry to which he responded 'do you have one from your own country?'. I had to tell him 'no' (because I'd lost it, the physical license) so he asked if I could get a copy sent to him. I replied in the affirmative and he said 'OK no problem'.

    Done and dusted.

Thailand and Australia have an agreement that you can drive in either country on a valid license whilst on holidays(short period) but try to explain that to a copper here and you get nowhere.
you always have the option of appealing the issue in court, you will win, he will lose, he will be reprimanded, he will spend the rest of his life making yours a living hell.

    oops I digress.

I got pinched for turning left and having a home made license plate, by one of Thailand's finest whilst visiting Chiang Mai a few years ago and as the fine was 1000 baht I screamed blue murder, after I calmed down the fine was still 1000 baht but after showing him registration papers for bike registration in my name, he did not believe I owned it, giving him a valid Thai bike license, and explaining how as my original license plate was stolen on my trip and I made one up to stop harassment, e let me off with a stern warning and 200 baht fine, with no receipt.

    Him wrong.

Note: Although International Driving Licences are valid for up to one year after arrival in Thailand, after three months many comprehensive insurance policies are made void if still driving on a foreign licence.

As with insurance, as American mate of mine manages a Honda bike dealership, and gets insurance through Tokio Marine for customers if they want. One young lad smashed up his new bike along with the side of the car that hit and the scooter he hit. No Driving License, but 1st class cover from TM.

The cop's eyes lit up, wanted to take him in and hold him, insurance guy turned up and sorted it all out, bail bond sorted immediately, charges dropped, insurance covered everything, all with no DL.

    Lucky mothafooker.

This guy reckons you can get a temporary license on a tourist visa, although it was written in June last year.

First of all, let’s dispel some myths. Yes, you CAN get a Thai driver’s license on a Tourist Visa, despite what some websites will tell you. However, there are two different types of licenses: a temporary (2-year) license and a permanent (5-year) license. The first license you’ll get, regardless of your visa, will always be a temporary one. However, if you’re on a non-immigrant visa, you can get a permanent license after the first one expires. This is no possible on a tourist visa, you’ll have to stick with temporary ones and renew every 2 years.

    ^^^

The part about them picking them up off the motosai taxi riders and them being made out of cardboard did seem a bit unusual.

^ Didn't yer mrs just pay 7k baht for one after failing all the tests?

You have a great memory for numbers. I had to ask her

She didnt fail, i thought 7k was the going rate and only realised when a mate told me. That was after I'd told her from the UK via phone how proud of her I was that she'd passed first time. Then as she went on to tell me that whilst on the test it started raining and she didnt know where the wipers were I kinda half realised what i'd paid for

Put her car in for repair a couple of months ago, there was one panel that wasnt dented-the roof.

    But she's getting there

You need a work permit or a "Residence Certificate" which is a letter from immigration or your embassy stating your reported address in Thailand.

    Yup.

It could be free, 200thb, or 500thb from immigration. You will probably need to get it from the office that you have done your annual extension from. Price/rorts vary from office to office.

The main rort though is if you need to go through the British Embassy, which charge 3,500thb.

You will need to use the original within 28 or 30 days from it being issued.

I tried color copies once thinking I was smart and was almost arrested and charged with a federal crime.

Thievin bastards...and you have to make an appointment with them online.

Its a 15 minute walk in job at Chonburi immigration and 2 or 300 baht
