Sit through an hour subtitled safety video do a peripheral vision test then a colour blindness test then a 50 question theory test of which you have to get 45 right.

If you're on a Non B or O the IDP is only valid for three months from first entry. Get a Thai license.

An International Driving Permit (there's no such thing as an International Driving Licence) can only be used with your own DL. An IDP on its own is useless. Anyway, as the White Man's Burden said in his OP he didn't have an IDP.

There is only one official system and that is the Royal Thai General System of Transcription. To use any other system would be treasonous. According to the Royal Thai General System of Transcription and all who sail in her the proper transcription of ฝรั่ง is "farang". According to the Thaksin-supporting republican Finland-plot linked Google Translate the proper pronunciation is "F̄rạ̀ng". I know which one สมเด็จพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้าดิศวรกุมาร กรมพระยาดำรงราชานุภาพ (that comes up with some peculiar results in the online translation engines!) would use and if it's good enough for him it's good enough for me!
