Several months ago new tenants moved into the house across the soi. Nice people, mid 30's. She's a teacher and we are told he's a soldier.

I've seen him in what appears to be civvies when he leaves. Neat. Tan slacks and white polo, and he keeps a pistolr tucked into the back of his pants, under his shirt.
Yesterday he turned up again, this time with a colleague and they both wore an all black uniform. Combat boots, black cargo pants, black shirt, and this time his pistol was in full view in a holster.

No, the insignia on the shoulder of this guy is black embroidery and hard to make out. There's not a splash of colour anywhere. Also he keeps his long sleeves buttoned at the wrist. No cap or headgear that I've seen.
We were told he's a soldier (but that might mean a number of things) and that when he's away he's stationed in Yala.

No, Hick, I live in an average type of suburban soi where all the houses open out to the street. You know, the whole front of the house slides open, so no curtains to twitch. As I sit here typing I need only turn my head slightly to see the entire section of street frontage and what the people in two houses opposite are doing in their front room.

All depends on where one lives. If you go down Sa Kaeo way near to the National Parks that boarder Cambodia then you'll not be surprised to be living next door to someone who's a forestry policeman. As well as a side arm many also carry pump action shot guns. Used to scare the elephants out of farmland back into the reserves.

sure does you hit the nail on the head.. but thats not the reason they have them

the reason is we .. europeans .. had in the 19th century uniforms for everything and it mimmic a facade of advancement they took to uniforms .. as prior they didnt really had them... when their civil service was formed they were a nation just comming out of mass slavery slavery, most thais were bonded slaves or peasants... then they went overnight into a nation state so the borrowed from european customs without having a native equivalent ..
