    What uniform?

Several months ago new tenants moved into the house across the soi. Nice people, mid 30's. She's a teacher and we are told he's a soldier.
He spends weeks away at a time and then comes home for a week.
I've seen him in what appears to be civvies when he leaves. Neat. Tan slacks and white polo, and he keeps a pistolr tucked into the back of his pants, under his shirt.
Yesterday he turned up again, this time with a colleague and they both wore an all black uniform. Combat boots, black cargo pants, black shirt, and this time his pistol was in full view in a holster.

What type of "soldier" do you think?

Forestry Police. What do I win?

A Thai forestry official takes a note as he examines lions in the enclosure at a zoo-like house on the outskirts of Bangkok, Thailand Monday, June 10, 2013

He is a plain closed policeman but yesterday was "scouts" day at school?

    Sukhumvit litter patrol?

The thai are crazy about their uniforms, every man and his dog has one.

It reinforces the idea of patriotic thainess, love of "the group" and delineates their position in the pecking order, probably the most important aspect of uniform wearing. It also controls any aspect of a persons individuality from shining through.

No, the insignia on the shoulder of this guy is black embroidery and hard to make out. There's not a splash of colour anywhere. Also he keeps his long sleeves buttoned at the wrist. No cap or headgear that I've seen.
We were told he's a soldier (but that might mean a number of things) and that when he's away he's stationed in Yala.

Are you peeking out the window like grandma?

Go have a chat and ask him. You're his neighbor. You're entitled.

    You are always welcome mate.

Best call first to make sure the missus has stock as she is selling them faster than she can make them.

No, Hick, I live in an average type of suburban soi where all the houses open out to the street. You know, the whole front of the house slides open, so no curtains to twitch. As I sit here typing I need only turn my head slightly to see the entire section of street frontage and what the people in two houses opposite are doing in their front room.

Not the Thai way, I believe to just go and ask what he does. He keeps a distance and has always been aloof.
I'm only curious. The black uniform and the black on black insignia and holstered side arm are not your normal neighbour.

All depends on where one lives. If you go down Sa Kaeo way near to the National Parks that boarder Cambodia then you'll not be surprised to be living next door to someone who's a forestry policeman. As well as a side arm many also carry pump action shot guns. Used to scare the elephants out of farmland back into the reserves.

    You two are pathetic. Really.
Amazingly, Lying Welching LT more so than our resident jerk this time.

The difference between aspersions cast by you two and by me is that the ones I cast are factual and real whereas yours are born of your pathetic imaginations.

    Carry on guys.

    She's definitely a teacher.
This guy looks like your 2nd photo, but he has no colour whatsoever anywhere on his uniform.

sure does you hit the nail on the head.. but thats not the reason they have them

the reason is we .. europeans .. had in the 19th century uniforms for everything and it mimmic a facade of advancement they took to uniforms .. as prior they didnt really had them... when their civil service was formed they were a nation just comming out of mass slavery slavery, most thais were bonded slaves or peasants... then they went overnight into a nation state so the borrowed from european customs without having a native equivalent ..
19th centuary europe. (excluding Britain). coal miners had dress uniforms, firemen did rail guards did.bank staff did ect ect
its like the small dress swords .. european dress swords were very common on government costumes in thailand in the 1900s as well
there is several types if you collect them german made..

Sometimes it's an advantage to know about your neighbours as you may need their assistance in the event of an emergency.
