Haha. All my dogs are females RD. Won't find any male dog junk laying out on tables.

We had a very unfortunate turn of events with our black lab puppy Maggie. Last Sunday we took her for her 3 month shots. No issue, standard fare. The next day I noticed she was pretty lethargic and not chasing me around like usual. Looking at vaccine reactions, she seemed pretty normal. its one of the side effects

By Tuesday she had gotten worse and she degraded very very fast. By noon or so I saw her wander off to a hedge area and having grown up around dogs and animals all my life, that was a "they want to die walk and hide". I told the wife get the car ready, Maggie is not well and getting worse. Off to the Vet we went. When we got there she was pretty much lifeless. Vet took her in and started IVs and did the blood panel. She was having an adverse reaction to the vaccination. We stayed at the vet and watched her. They said they want to keep her there and I said No, that if she is going to pass, it will be at our house with us. She had an allergic reaction to the Canine Parvovirus part of the vaccination.

Being my wife was a nurse, she knew all the process for the IV and the machine use. I had all the meds.

First night. Was lifeless and barely hanging on. We had her in our room to watch and monitor the IV.

We took her back every morning at 10 am for a battery of injections since Tuesday, Canine Parvovirus has a 90% mortality rate on puppies < 4 months and the window is 24 to 36 hrs. So we knew what we had to get through it.

Vet and my wife injecting a host of meds ( Antibiotics, Anti bleeding meds, Anti nausea meds, pain meds) and setting up a new IV.

Well here we are Saturday and she is up and trying to run around and eating solid foods. Barking and wanting to play with her sisters. Tomorrow we remove the IV and get her back on a solid food program.

Was definitely a long week.

Not ignoring our other dogs,

Annie after fetching the ball and me hosing her off to cool down.

Sandy the same. Have to keep a water hose on them to stay cool.

Beer 30 while Annie cools off on the wet cement.

Judy always stayed by Maggie in her cage.

^Thankfully you acted quickly, she's alive because of that. Parvo is a terrible disease, here's hoping she's clear now.

Yeah it is and no real cure if it consumes them.

^ Mate, that's great news that she's recovering.

Coincidentally enough I took Lola to the vet for her second (of three) vaccination for parvovirus and distemper combined. She also had her first rabies shot.

I'm curious... you said that Maggie had an allergic reaction to the parvovirus vaccine but does that mean that she actually caught the virus from the vaccine, or something else. My understanding is that the vaccinations spur the immune system to build up antibodies against a disease but I thought it that vaccines weren't active and so couldn't actually cause the disease? I may week be completely wrong though.

A couple of years ago I took two puppies to Nong Kai after a TD member had kindly offered them a home, but both caught either distemper or parvo (I can't remember which) after their first jab at the vets. Very sadly one didn't make it. We discussed how they could have caught either disease because they were isolated at their home until the vaccinations were to be finished and the final conclusions were that they may have caught it at the vets, or a bird or human could have entered the property having picked up a small amount of faecal matter from an infected dog on a shoe or foot. Both distemper and parvo are extremely contagious but however you look at it, that little puppy was so unlucky after finding a great home that it still makes me sad to think of it.

After I saw her degrade so quickly, I called my veterinarian buddy in the states to ask. Not that I didn't trust the gal here as she is extremely smart, but I wanted a better understanding. According to James, my friend, the vaccination cycle actually injects a small amount of active virus to spur on their immune system to fight it. Kind of like the flu vaccine for humans. You are actually administered a small dose of the active flu virus to drive your immune system. Like the Flu shot, some humans react and catch the flu and some even die. Same scenario here. Her immune system, for whatever reason, was not yet developed enough to fight off the virus so it took her over and quickly. I did ask as you noted about catching it at the Vet. He said not possible. The Canine Parvo takes typically 3 to 5 days after contraction before any signs show up then another 2 or 3 days or so before they become very ill. This happened in basically 24 hrs after the vaccination. James said its unfortunate but not all that uncommon. He told me has had numerous dogs and cats react severely to Rabie shots.

As of today she is not out of the woods yet. She is still terribly dehydrated so we administer 500cc of Ringers Lactate which helps with her internal organs and keeping them functioning properly. She did run around the property with me in the morning. I have 2 or 3 fresh water bowls along the route we walk and she drank at all 3. All good signs. She is alert and is eating solid food now 3 times a day. My wife has been incredible caring for her. Makes up special food, does all the IV monitoring. Has her sit by her all day. She really loves the little girl as she does all our dogs.

I once chewed half a pint glass and swallowed it for a bet back in my youth. Never did me any harm.
I also swallowed a penny and although it showed up on the xray, my mum never found it within a week of chopping up my stools.
And then one evening a wayward marble found its way up my sphincter in the bath at age 3. Oh hang on, no I did retrieve that

Today Maggie is doing great. Back to sleeping with her big sisters in the kennel. This morning we took a nice jog/walk to the river and back. Tomorrow final check up at the Vet and a full blood panel just to confirm. My niece is here for the next 2 months as school is out and they have a connection so she has been sitting with her and she follows her everywhere.

It's really heated up in Korat the last couple of days and I must admit, if I didn't have a young daughter and a gardener sneaking around the place I'd be tempted to try the same myself and let it all hang out.

They do stay remarkably cool, and they're also not glazed so non-slip (which helps the dogs standing up, especially the older ones).

As I watered the front lawns, the dogs head on out and just lay on it to cool off, Sandy and Annie go and sit while the sprinklers are running. Maggie waits a bit. It was 39.5C today.

My step daughter likes to take the dogs to a local water hole which is not far from our place and she usually takes them in the sidecar.
However yesterday that bike wasn't working so she decided to make them run instead.
The young dog Mork said stuff that I want to ride and jumped on the pillion seat for the trip down there he has never been taught to sit on the back seat of the bike he just did it must be lazy like me.
I reckon he is looking down at the boss dog Dam and saying "sucker".
