Fred you need to spend a few hours on the internet and catch up with Thailand the country. Not Thailand the dream. It has changed so much.

One example are you going to eat the same food as your wife day in and day out? If not where are you going to buy the food you need and how are you going to get to the supermarket?

Have you checked into health insurance for your wife and yourself ? Are all your documents correct so you can convert your visa to a "Marriage visa"?

I am assuming you have seen the land and know where you want your house to be situated?

I just got back from Phuket and our honeymoon. I've been there 4 times in a year. I research all I can on the subject and I do want to live in the country as city life for me is something I hate. Wife and family all are good cooks, and I stayed with them for 3 weeks this last time and absolutely love all the food (except the bugs). There are small restaurants and markets within walking distance and Kantharalak is 30 km away, so a scooter would suffice until I bought as truck, which I will. I will not move there until I have enough to both build the house and have some in the bank as a backup, which will be in less than a years time. The only thing I was worried on was some work to have income for the essentials, electric, food, internet, water etc. They live on very little there in small houses but I want a house that is more like the size I have here, about 1300 sq ft. If I can live for the rest of my life, and who knows at 59 how long that might be, in peace with a pretty wife that cooks great, I'll be happy. The property where we would build the house is a rice farm. Two areas are already in the mind for building on.

For once i agree. Calculate exactly how much money you need. Then multiply it by 50.

^ Hate to the break the news to ya Terry, but none of us are bulletproof; even with a billion backup. Learning to live is the best option, I reckon.

You're breaking fuck all to me mate,

I'm living a great life but at the same time realize that when living in Thailand as an Expat only the dollars will save our arse.

    Way it is innit.

    Ask Topper about that one.

Some will never learn to live, yet pretend to have it all down and still don't get it.

The reality catches up real quick.

As the old saying goes, "misery likes company" fred. If you're reasonably content and happy with your life and lifestyle, why bother trying to tell the whole world about it? And if you do that on the internet, you're just bound to have some serial malcontent, who has never even met you, telling you that actually no, you're not happy.

Good luck with your move and marriage anyway.

Nothing happened to the Land of Smiles. Of course there are gradual changes to living in Thailand as time goes by but this is the same for every country. Some of the miserable sods here would never be happy anywhere. They are bored. They have no interests other than posting to this forum and complaining about everything.

My reason for wanting to move to Thailand is to take my wife back to her family before I die. I hope to be here for many years yet and don't want to pop off just yet. I reckon that an intelligent person is never bored and with my music, my dogs, my gadgets, my ebooks ( thousands of them ) and a genuine desire to become fluent in Thai will ensure that I am never lost for things to do. Depending on what visa I decide to get i could even end up teaching English again although this is unlikely.

It's no coincidence that the most interesting posts on this forum are those made by guys who enjoy themselves, work or have family responsibilities. They are also the happiest posts. By enjoying themselves I mean travelling around Thailand and seeing the sights rather than just getting pissed.

I loved living in Thailand before and in a strange way I prefer living there to being a tourist there.

I have family here but they are scattered around the states, including Hawaii. My wife has a huge family and I knew from the start that she wanted to stay there because of this. I know I'm expected to be the breadwinner in the family but that's the same as it is here in the states. Women here want money just as they do there. The only things I would miss are my kids, who I can visit or have visit, and hunting, which I can fly to from here also. No one knows how long they will live, I took this chance with a new wife, of having someone that would love me until I die, and of course there are no guarantees in anything anywhere anyway. Like you, I have enough cd's to last me another 250 years, even if I never listen to the same song twice. And animals, tv, the internet and fishing would take up some time after work too.

    Go for it Fred
It's not going to be a walk in the park and it's expensive
But it's expensive staying in your own home town
Your getting on a bit so keep a few bob in your bank and enjoy your new adventure and life
It's not utopia and money helps but isn't that the same every where
My money goes further in Thailand and I love the life
There may come a time that changes and I will kiss it goodbye
My kids will know where I am
No different than anywhere but the women are a bit less demanding
    Go for it mate

Lots of advice for you here Fred, but you can just post a pic of the wife and I will decide if you are doing the right thing.

(Clothed, but naked will also be acceptable)
