My Harley is up for sale on bahtsold and I've had a few Thais show interest and arrange viewing. After asking if paperwork is ready to transfer etc, they just don't turn up.

So how do these bikes get into the country? Smuggling? Also, if a bike does not have an official owner's book, can you be in possession if it is not ridden on the roads and has not been stolen?

Minorly dismantled, and imported as three separate imports of parts.
Reassembled and using an 'agent' to get it set up to different levels of legality.

    Sometimes.

Sure they look for any bike with out papers, or plate to have a go at taking it. They also work on a snitch in fee, several years back when they first cracked down on the imported bikes the local poo yai ban bought the police to my shed which had 8 bikes locked inside some booked some with import papers and a couple with none.
MIL told them she didn't have a key and would have to wait for me to come back. They return once more MIL told them the same thing. Said they will be back again and will cut the locks. Got home from worked and moved all the bikes but they never returned.
Also imported a bike in parts back when it was easier, had permission paper from transport department to put the bike together and paid import tax on every part on the bike then excise tax and was classed as Thai made bike. Police wanted it as it was a nice custom HD but after two attempts by two diffrent groups to take the bike but couldn't because all tax and paper work never had any more issues. Never got it booked as that was the year they stopped letting you buy the books and now every bike had to go to Bangkok. My bike was to long to low, to loud. No speedo no indicators so never bothered.
At the moment they can't take a bike from your home if you have import and excise tax paid. But l have heard that in Bangkok they have been confiscating bikes with taxes paid but no book if caught on the road. I expect they will change this law so they can take all none book bikes in the future.

No tea money in it if you're legit.
