I have another dumb question, can I, how do I, set up navigation on my Samsung to use in Thailand. I realize I will have to purchase a Thai sim,, then what.

google maps ?
turn on your phone gps , start up maps and then the data to draw the map on your screen will download - so you need a data plan or you will pay 1.5 baht a minute
just be aware google maps is not meant to be an off line map software
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.
does anyone use other offline gps navigation software on an android device in thailand ? tomtom , garmin , etc
I hard a TOM TOM, for me very hard to use, actually I put it in the rubbish bin, my partener at the time used her phone, it was excellent.
I had the young guy here to look at my phone, looks like it has GPS, I didnt know that, so get to Thailand, get a sim for ti, then get someone to show me how to steer it.
Adding to what I just said about TOM TOM, we had a Garmin also, couldn't get it to work, sent it back for service, so called OK, that went into the bin along with the TOM TOM
Mozzbie,
Are you talking about driving, walking, motorbike?
If driving and on holiday I seem to manage by preplanning my trips using Google maps on a PC. Then using the odometer. You can also, as you may know see pictures of important junctions on street view.
If for work different, but a lot of Thailand can be discovered when "slightly" lost.
Upcountry is not a problem. Navigating in Bangkok can be a headache if you don't know exactly where you are going.
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?
I apologize if any offence was caused. unless it was intended.
You people, you think I know feck nothing; I tell you: I know feck all
Those who cannot change their mind, cannot change anything.
Download Here maps from the App Store
You can use it offline
If you can find me in a bar in Bangkok, I'll show you how to do it
If it's a Samsung phone then it'll have Google maps on it which is easy to use. I drove all around using the navigation, excellent; checked what buses went where, excellent; checked quickest routes, local restaurants, the list goes on.
Google Maps is free and works brilliantly.
I am trying out here maps - which is the nokia maps - so far it looked ok with the display names for towns which google maps fcuks up by turning them off at different zoom levels etc
google maps pisses me off when driving for a number of reasons
it turns off even if I have it plugged into a power source
it does not always follow your position as you are driving and when you hit the show me where I am button , the zoom you had set before goes back to small distance
it does not swing to your heading which it should know as you are moving
I would like it to display speed
and a few other niggles apart from not being able to store more than a few tiles offline
^^^ I'm sure you can find fault with it, correctly so, but as a free app I've found it really good and useful.
^ which is why I am keen to test dillingers suggestion
as long as it does not give me a penchant for strawberry breezers
^^^^^ Do they get ya pissed
Not sure about Thailand, but use the Waze application in Malaysia and the US. It is free, and great at routing you around traffic, even changing routes during your trip if traffic picks up (obviously using data). In KL when I used my Garmin it used to take me 90 minutes to get from our office in PJ to KLCC after work - with Waze it took 20-30! I use it on an iphone, I assume they have an android version as well....
OK, think iv'e sorted my SAMSUNG, now I shouldn't need to get a GPS when I rent a car and will also be able to navigate my way around Banger's.
the other things you will want to get is a car window mount , cigarette lighter charger with USB ( 2.0 amp ) and USB to micro USB cable about 1 metre
some sort of shade would be useful , but I have not seen anything suitable yet - my mount is a bit crap and I have sturdied the fcuker up a bit with duct tape
got a great bendy mount for the phone on the desk , but yet to get a good one for the car - tried a few
I want to see if this here maps has the correct speed limits and speed cameras marked - will find out today as I have a small journey to do
I just received a fine in the mail for doing 112 in a 60 zone ( 500 baht ) - muek lek on the main fuckin highway - as far as I can see from the photo it must be the windy bit in the hills - but I had no idea that the speed limit was reduced there
^^^^^ A mount for the phone is an excellent idea, I will devise something with a shade cover,,, thanx
I had a look and the speed camera warning software seems to be called camsam - there is something called scdb.info which they maintain - Thailand has multiple listings of cams - Blitzerbersicht Thailand - SCDB.info - The Worldwide Speed Camera Database
you need the camsam plus version ( not available in thailand for 44baht ) to be able to have a small widget that sits on top of the screen until you turn it off and you have here maps underneath
will see how it performs , though the real test will be driving to Bangkok on the 1st
Another thought, if I use my SAMSUNG in Thailand,, is it possible to have the display and vocals in English.
^ of course
I tried out the here maps while driving and it was quite good - one touch on screen to switch between driving map and topdown map - good
displays speed and speed limit and flashes red underneath the speed and a chime when you exceed the limit
I had camsam plus running as a widget which set itself on top of everything , but you just move the box to where you want it - I just slid it toward the top of the display ( portrait mode ) as in drive mode on here maps when moving at speed there is just a blue sky there
no chance to see how it showed speed cams yet
perhaps this topic should be in driving or computers
