Mozzie, bring company to Kanch. If you don't you would be grateful for a ladyboy. However Kanch does not have them either.

    It's slow as fuck.

Took it from the Bridge up to some little Nakhon Nowhere and bailed out. Problem was, no taxis up there so had to wait until the stupid train came back down the line.

Perhaps that is why it is called 'a day trip'.

Referring to the statement from Ice, he has obviously tried and failed here in Ballarat, maybe thats why he comes up with things he say's. Ya see, the truth is,
I have done very well for myself here, but I think most of that reason is im'e not a dick head. And what I said here wasn't directed at Iceman.

KCB has got a few 'off the beaten track' places if you've got wheels. Better if only two.
Head out from KCB to a town called Thong Pha Phum. Before the town there's a turn off for the 3 Pagodas Pass. Nice enough journey going there but the pagodas are bit of a let down.
Don't enter the town but stay on the main road and it will take you through some nice scenery with a reservoir and a house-boat community on the right-hand side of the road and limestone cliffs along on the left.

Carry on along the road and start following the roadsigns for Pilok. There's no major turn offs from this road so you can't go wrong. The road will eventually take you up a mountain jungle road with really nice views. At the top of the mountain there'll be viewpoint and you should be able to see the reservoir you passed earlier.

Going down the other side of the mountain will bring you to Pilok. Stay on the road and follow the roadsigns for Ban Etong, a village on the Burmese border. The road should bring you to a patrolled checkpoint and you'll be asked to leave your license/Thai ID card as once passed the checkpoint you will be in no-mans land.
About 50 meters ahead you can park your wheels and walk up a small hill to two flag poles flying the Thai and Burmese flags. On a clear day you can look beyond the jungle tops and see the Andaman Sea.
This place is where the PTTP oil/gas comes into Thailand and caused some controversy because the government at the time (I think Chavalit's) kept quiet about it.
Collect your ID upon leaving no-mans land and enter the village if you wish.

Looking at the photos and the vid, it appears the place has changed somewhat. Try and see it soon before it becomes a backpacker target.

Another place to head for is Si Sawat. Look it up for photos on Captain Slash's site. As the guy says, the road is brilliant. At Si Sawat you can return the same way by road or take the ferry that will cut out the journey around an inlet. Or if time permits, carry on along the main road through the village and head for Nong Prue. This will take you over another mountain that looks like it is now paved. It was gravel when I rode there around 2003. At the top of the mountain there's a viewpoint overlooking the lake. Probably best during the rainy season as everywhere there should be lush green vegetation.

Enjoy KCB wherever you decide to go.

    Some other memories of Kan

Great vid Gazz, armed with all this info, I can't fail but enjoy my few days at Kanchanaburi and district. All I need to do now is wade through the extensive information supplied.
I will be in Bangkok before the first weekend in September, then most likely Kanchan on the Sunday or Monday.
If anyone thinks they might be there around that time, It would be great to catch up over a beer, Iceman included.

I met my fiancee in Isaan and we took a trip just after we met from Isaan to Kanchanaburi. It was the best three days of my life. Not only did I get to see the Bridge and the surrounding area, but we fell in love there also. We stayed at the Bamboo House and I will never forget those three days as long as I live.

We've been twice, the last time a couple of weeks back. It's a nice place for a few days away. We took the train both times. Only 100 baht. Photos of the train journey... http://www.renegadetravels.com/bangk...buri-by-train/.
