    Cooking gas price hike!

Is anyone aware of the reasons for the big increase in cooking gas?

I have not seen anything in the media about a gas price rise but it hit yesterday when I bought a container and was charged 400 baht!

In July last year the price was 315, then September 330, January (2014) 350, and now 400 baht. That's a hefty increase and considering it's a government controlled price, I'd be interested to know the reasons. Considering how much gas is used domestically and commercially for food preparation, I think it will have a significant effect on Thailand.

"reason" is sort of irrelevant methinks same same vehicle fuel jumps..been paying 290/300 for 10 years..think it is about 380 here now...lasts about 4 months. Significant effect....naaah.

Sorry, I probably should have said "significant effect on Thais" instead of "Thailand." I was referring to the "ordinary" Thai and not the nation.

350 Baht here in Chiang Mai. Not exactly breaking the bank is it when we cook on gas everyday and a bottle (15KG ) usually lasts 3 months - damn site cheaper than electric!

    Yep...for sure.
Very common for many households to alternate cooking fuels and techniques - cuts down on some rising [and very unnecessary] costs.

Think it will get more expensive still. Remember reading a while ago somewhere (sorry, can't recall where) that there is a policy in place to significantly raise bottled gas prices over the next few years, if I recall, by reducing the government subsidy. Think the plan was to at least double the price over a couple of years.

Seems like a trend, as basics are rising [prices] consistently.

Price of Gas is never a consideration that I ever contemplate in Thailand.
Price of a new gas Cooker to replace the first one I purchased for the in laws is all I know.

The last bottle of gas we bought was 330baht and will last about 6 months at least.
Most cooking apart from breakfast is done outside if its not raining.
I just collect twigs and use dry grass to get a bbq pot going and then throw on some charcoal that we buy in large bags. Not sure of the cost of the charcoal as she pays so cant be that much or I would be paying.
Country life could almost live without gas if push came to shove.

This is where the rice pledging scheme begins to look cheap. The Finance Minister has stated that Thailand cannot afford to continue the subsidy forever since it is costing the government ..... $ 5,million per day. I guess that since the proper price should be nearer five times the current price the subsidy will have to be phased out kinda gradually.

Not by much. 15 kg of propane equal 193 kwh of electricity, which costs in Thailand about twice as much as the gas bottle. Eletricity is far less wasteful however, the lost heat of a gas burner is many times greater. I'd opt for E.

If you meant 15 litres (liquids are usually measured in volume), that would only be 112 kwh.

Maybe the government raised the price of gas per kilo so it was the same prices as (or more expensive than) LPG for vehicles. Last year LPG for household use was about 3 baht a kilogram cheaper than the retail price of LPG for use by vehicles and some crooks sold domestic gas to motorists.

No surprises there then, market forces balancing.
Anybody on here in the U.K driving on LPG , I am considering converting to it, as Diesel ( DERV ) is so expensive.
Maybe Thai Taxi drivers are leading the way forward in using LPG.

Check out how long it takes to refuel and look at the lines for the gas pumps at stations.
Get stuck behind a few trucks and you will be there for a while..

That is for CNG or NGV here. But LPG has more stations and we have never had to wait, or really look for a station all over Thailand. The wife has used it from less than 10 baht a liter to 12,5 now.

1/3 the cost of petrol after the conversion.

You are being ripped off. Try BBQ Galore or BCF or Rays outdoors - 9kg bottle $19.95 to $24.95. cheap as chips for Australia. It when you go to buy the food to cook that you really get fucked over

Think about it, does cooking gas ever go down?

Just the natural progression of life.

The wife uses a lot of charcoal to cook with since she hates paying the "high" price for cooking gas.
