Here's a small collection of critters found roaming outside the house. Some types have been posted before and some may be new.

A very attentive mantis on the scooter. At first I thought it was some kind of leaf litter picked up on the road, then I did a double take and realized it was a big insect staring at me. Never encountered them before I moved to Thailand. I always thought they were cool and this one followed every move like he was giving it a lot of thought.

A big fat frog of some kind that came in out of the rain.

Another one of those huge scorpions escaping a downpour. This one about 15 cm long. We get a lot of these in the rainy season. As with most critters I encounter, I spare them if possible and in this case I scooped it up in a dust pan and deposited it outside the garden wall.

A rat snake of some sort on the prowl.

A large snail in the garden.

    A neighborly tokay gecko.

This one was taken at the Lopburi zoo (I would be a bit alarmed if I found this one cruising through our yard). A several meter long king cobra consuming another snake.

Sumo. What's that snail doing with a lighter?

Anyway, in my garden today. Had to take the pics through the window.

Could be a Shikra Falcon. Beautiful bird, it or its friends have been to my garden before.

I got these two photos while driving through the scrub in Mozambique. It was a narrow overgrown track but I definitely saw something flash across it about 50 meters in front. Stopped where I though was the right place and looked long and hard into the scrub. It took a while to see it, then grab the camera. Can you see what it was?.

Hint; If i was to get out of the Toyota and take a few steps into there for a closer look the odds of being alive to type this would have been slim. Scroll down to see what it was if you can't see anything in this pic.

I revved the engine and beeped the horn and it didn't move. After about 3 minutes of not moving a muscle it slowly moved back and took one last look, which is when I got this photo.

    Great pics, gents. Greens sent.

I once went (many years ago) to a zoo, miles outside Pnohm Pehn. Stood looking through this giant open air cage, a tiger was about 5 yards away, took me about 10 minutes to see it!

Not really - they can be extremely beneficial to the environment.
Guarantee that they have more of a place in the universe than our kind has.

Sounds a bit odd for a zoo.

Do they throw them in dead, or place live snakes in with the cobras for them to kill and eat?

When Andy the guy who built our bungalow in Thailand did the job he stayed in a little place on the family land ,, pretty basic it was to , after he left we cleared the room , lifting the mattress and between the mattress and the top sheet he had been sleeping on one of these buggers .

    It was snuffed out .

I,m not sure but I believe it is part of the scorpion family ? I know it has a bloody nasty sting in the tail
I'm proud of my 38" waist , also proud I have never done drugs

Shouldn't have intervened but, after taking the shots, saw the little bugger flapping so I took a small stick to the snake, it released it...Funeral for the bird will be held this afternoon!

    Pics to follow...
