Yes the saliva of most monitor lizards has a nasty bacteria that can slowly kill you.

Nope on the litter. The creek does a great job of keeping all of it on its way to the ocean. They have teams of hotel folks that pick up the litter off the beaches every morning. I walk by them. They do a heck of a good job.

Monitors are also good at keeping the snake population down.
Saw a friend's video yesterday of one getting eaten and its tail still moving around.

Yes, I wasn't calling the Great LT a monitor lizard or a gender fluid poodle.

I save those names for Dill and Switch.

Came across this monster this AM on the island. It wasn't all that happy I was near its post. Huge eyes.

M'Sahib was sweeping in our garage this morning, and saw one of our outside cats interested in something in a corner. Turned out to be this baby Red Knecked Keelback (about the length of a hand). Got in the dust pan she was using and let it go next to a khlong about 100 metres from the house. Will need to be a bit vigilant for a while as 'Mammy' might be nearby. M'Sahib took the photo.

^ We used to get a few red necked keelbacks but I haven't seen one in the garden for years now. They're venomous and can give a very dangerous bite.

So if that was a baby... where are all of it's brothers and sisters? And mama and papa???

On the dog walk this morning there was a pair of these birds, not sure what they are but there's plenty around and usually in pairs.

As soon as we approached these two flew up into the air and started swooping on us and giving a high-pitched call... classic distraction behaviour.

    And here's why...

Not the most comfy looking of nests. Someone else had obviously already seen this and had banged in a few stakes around the nest to try and protect it.

Spot on Nev, they will also fly and land pretending they are injured to try to lure any predator away from the nest.

^^ They've got a really distinctive high-pitched call that I've been trying to copy as I walk past their nest, but they don't seem fooled.

^ And yes, when I walk past one will fly up in the air and the other will scuttle along the ground in the other direction, often holding a wing down as though it's injured. Drives the dogs nuts.
