    Cost of living in Thailand.

I once heard that earning little money, assume in the states (the currency is U.S. dollars), can be really good and comfortable life in Thailand. Do you at the moment, life in Thailand is profitable if the salaries are in another currency? Thanks for all the answers!

Life in Thailand is profitable? Well I do OK, so Yes.

Just out of interest, did you go to school in the States?

If one is receiving $ for a salary here in Thailand, then they are on an expat wage; which should be more than enough to live comfortably.

From your initial post I figure you could easily get a job teaching American English for around $ 1,000 per month.

I don't think that's the case. The cost of living in Thailand has risen considerably over recent years/decades. To have a really good and comfortably life that a westerner would expect, similar to they have in the west, would not be possible on a low salary (you'd want $3,000 per month for such a lifestyle; even then it wouldn't be luxury...). If you want to live a basic Thai life with Thai things, I wouldn't call it really good and comfortable, but some might, could be possible on $1,000 per month.

There are so many variables here. When I first came to Thailand my salary was B 24,500 per month.

My intentions where to stay a year or two at most and then move on. Life happened. I got married and had a daughter.

I now make B130,000 per month along with the wife earning B60,000. Not Hi-So but we get by. Not living the luxury lifestyles of the rich and famous, but we do ok.

Many expats would laugh at this amount as they are still paying for bills from abroad.

Everybody had a shoe string. Some just longer than others...

Can I point that my last salary in Thailand was a trillion baht a minute* and that even then I had problems keeping my fleet of aircraft carriers maintained?

Actually I earned more money than anybody else anywhere and whatever anybody else got I got more than them because I am a lovely person and deserve it.

I once knew somebody in Thailand who only earned a billion baht a minute, How anybody can live on a pittance like that I just don't know

    * No wait, it was two trillion. Three!

We had a thread about living in the 'sticks' as opposed to BKK or the tourist areas which might help you out:

These type of threads have been pondered upon more than a few times...

As there might not be a definitive standard towards "cost of living" - every situation will be different from the next.

Depending on your comfort zone and lifestyle.

Why folks inquire about such rhetorical items...

It's impossible to live anywhere on less than a million dollars a day. Faberge eggs don't grow on trees, you know.

Err, that equates to an income of nigh on £4,000 per month ( exceeding the average UK wage by £2,000) and on a purchasing power parity basis even living in Bangkok that would secure a very nice lifestyle indeed. In the boonies it would be sufficient to be squire of the manor with a cherry on top.

Either you are simply trolling or an idiot. A decent house in a very nice moo baan in the better inner suburbs of Bangkok would be about 60,000 baht to rent monthly. Food here is cheap overall and subsidises the luxuries. Power is relatively expensive but this is balanced by the fact there are no local taxes and water is practically free. Travelling about is dirt cheap and local resorts are inexpensive so holiday breaks do not represent such a challenge as they might in the West.

    Presumably, you have other commitments.
