How long does this shite take? I have a number of packages in transit from the US, they are showing up as being in 'Customs Clearance' at the moment. Any ideas how long this normally takes? Packages are being sent using USPS.
Cheers.

It can take four or five days, and longer if it's over the weekend- the protests going on probably aren't speeding things along either.
Should not be a problem noodles just as long as you have given the Mexican prostitutes enough water with them in the crates

^^Cheers, one of the items is a racing exhaust, so the delay is not encouraging me to think I got away with the import tax.

Very unlikely it will slip through, especially if the actual value of the pipe is on the customs label or shipping invoice- they're pretty wise to bike accessories (though I just had some gear come through without a customs hit- I was pleasantly surprised).
Any ideas of what sort of percentage tax I'm looking at on the exhaust?
Worst case ~37%.
I received my UPS package 2 days early this week and they charged me 7%. Does anyone know if that is claimable VAT through the company?
As long as they want, and they will also ask you to pay what they want !
It's so friggin' arbitrary- I had two jackets come in recently ($250 and $325) and both arrived in large boxes and were assessed no tax at all- I had a Dainese Norsorex Vest ($125) delivered yesterday in a small box, and they hit me for 35%- better then the other way around, but still...
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.
HST
The shipping price is subject to VAT + the goods price VAT, same same in most countries and add custom taxes, handling fees might apply...
Freight companies know best but never quote you those !
unless you strongly specify that you want to know ALL costs included VAT and Custom
That's 39% of the landed cost, not the cost of the item. So you can pay 39% of the shipping as well.
Not 37 as above because the 7% is levied on the 30% making it 39% (100x1.3x1.07 = 139)
When budgeting or deciding it is best to allow for the extra 39%.
If the package is small/light there is a better chance of it slipping through. Anything large and heavy..... unless it arrives on a Sunday! At least that is my theory why some stuff gets through and other doesn't.
So items are less like maybe tools...
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?
I apologize if any offence was caused. unless it was intended.
You people, you think I know feck nothing; I tell you: I know feck all

Re customs/duty charges.
How are things handled if sent by ordinary mail.
Is it the local Thai Post Office that will estimate charges?
Do they have customs officials at the main Post Office in the Amp.
(am presently in Europe and shopping way too much stuff I want to bring to LoS,
wonder of I should use postal services or pay overweight on the plane
or use air cargo)
any experiences would be appreciated

There's a separate customs office that checks on your package (at least that's been my experience)- I've had to pick my stuff up there a couple of times (large/expensive deliveries)- very small boxes or envelopes usually make it through unchecked, though not every time.
I always pay for an extra bag when I fly in from the States- it's generally going to be a better deal, and you won't have to rely on the post office (you'll only have to worry about dodgy baggage handlers).
I am tempted to go for paying overweight. Feel more confident discussing with the customs people at the airport rather than somewhere else.
My address is in Nonthaburi.
If I send a parcel by postal service and it is stopped by customs, what then?
Would I have to go to some office in BKK and clear/pay or do they
stipulate some duty which can be paid at the local post office?
Or what?
Also,
If I opt for air cargo the logistics company said they would give me
copies of the manifest.
To get the cargo out I would have to go to Thai Cargo with the manifest copy,
Thai cargo would then give me the original manifest.
Then I should go Customs and get the manifest stamped/cleared.
Then back to Thai Cargo to collect the stuff.
Anyone done this? Do they just stamp and let you go or do they want to see detailed list of content and stipulate some sky high duty?
Customs is calculated in Bangkok then paid locally. I've always been undercharged and the usual fee seems to be 7 baht.
I do everything I can to ensure I don't use Fedex/DHL/et al as they're a bunch of thieving bastards in cahoots with the thieves at Thai customs.

So how long can a package end up stuck in customs for? I've never had one take over a week. Now I'm waiting on a fairly expensive watch I ordered from ebay (shipped USPS) and it's been in customs for 10 business days (2 weeks) now.
How do you know it's in customs? Only time I've ever had anything help by customs was when I had an item delivered by TNT and I refused to pay the duty.
That would be my question too.
If it was shipped via USPS and the Thai Customs Department stopped it and decided it was Dutiable you should have received a Form in the Mail from the Thai Post Office telling you what Duty etc. was due and where you had to go - usually a fairly local Thai Post Office branch - to pay the Duty and collect your Package.
