Chokchai Farms just south of Korat is a nice place to stop on a treck back from Issan. Probably the best, most tender and flavorfull of any restaurant meat I've had in LOS.

'Spose you can stop on the way to Issan too just have to make a long-ass u-turn.

It is not the steak that is important, it is comparing two things exactly the same from both countries and that is a current example I used

A small house can be had anywhere in rural America for less than you quote and comparing Jomtien, like it is a world class place to live, is just fukin stupid

Running aircon in my Thai house upstairs and downstairs is around 7500 a month. Yes it is and damn right the house is always cool for my family and when friends come for a visit.

Yes but since you moved to Thailand, air-con is a luxury you cannot afford or you do with out and live with your smelly, sweaty ass

Now back to apples to apples, yeh if you can only make $1800 a month, well shit man, you could live in a fukin tent anywhere in the world and say it is cheaper

You come to Thailand and say it is cheaper, yet you live NO where near the quality level of what you came from unless you were living in a fukin slum somewhere in India or UK?

Once again, it you want to live in a 1 room condo the size of my bathroom, that is your business but don't get the idea it is cheaper. You get what you pay for.

Buy a house in America, buy the same size house in Thailand. Have the same conveniences like normal human beings have all over the world, before you were broke dick and living on street food in Thailand, like air-con, hi-speed internet, gold tv package, international calling, buying normal groceries at Tesco Lotus like bacon and eggs with toast for breakfast, plenty of meat, poultry, fish, shrimp etc for the other meals. Milk, cheese, beer, cereal, bread, snacks, etc.

Then you want to take the clan on a holiday in Thailand and instead of staying in a fukin dirty hut out in bumsville, you have a nice seaside room or villa that runs you more per night than your condo costs for a month.

    Is Thailand cheaper?

Got the idea yet or do you need some more facts?

What are you driving? An old 5 year old beat up Honda wave with your cute thai girlfriend and your 3 kids?

Cars most of all are NOT cheap in Thailand

Yes but I forget, it is Thailand, no NEED for a car when you cannot afford one, right?

The people hell-bent to believe Thailand is cheap are living way under the standards they came from because it is ALL they can afford. Period. That is the fact.

If you have a normal sized 3 bedroom house in a secure sub division, drive a new car and have kids in international school, you know damn well it is not cheaper.

See the quote about living in a fukin tent because that would be even cheaper than Thailand wouldn't it?

    Back to apples to apples.

I havent had the chance to try it yet but I have heard it is a good place to get a steak if you need one. I for one am perfectly happy with rice, fish, chicken, pork, etc. Even in the USA steak was a once in awhile thing.
I'm not saying it was Aliens, but it was Aliens!

A moron is a person who will not admit to living a degraded lifestyle in Thailand and making 1,000's of excuses to justify his meager existence to convince himself it is better, when he has no choice to go anywhere else.

I have never heard ONE expat living in Thailand ever admit to the fact they are living below the standard they were living at before moving to Thailand.

Now how many expats living a degraded lifestyle would even be here at All if there were no Thai girls?

Facts are facts and 99% will never admit they came to Thailand to find a woman and end up living however they can just to survive and stay.

I am quite sure not every single poster on this forum is content with the way they are living in Thailand, it is just a fact no one dares to admit the truth.

When someone does admit the truth, it is like letting out a big, dark, secret and then the wannabe's pile on with the bashing and how great their life is in a Condo in Jomtien???????

If you are trying to live anywhere and support a family on $1,800 a month, I really feel for you, but then again, it is your own fault for being that stupid either that or you are trapped financially where you cannot support your family visa's and moving to your own country where you should be able to make more money????

I would rather be a moron that admits to the truth and facts, that a complete idiot in denial of the truth.

Kind of bar girl syndrome for expat men. Start making enough sick buffalo stories and you actually start believing them.

Now, who wants to start a new post comparing living in a Condo in Jomtien to living in a tent? I am sure the same folks will argue the Thai condo is still cheaper.

    LiveinLOS,

I do not think you are a moron. I think you are heavily jaded.

So Lets look at where you Lived in Thailand? Lets consider where you live here now in the US. Lets talk mortgage, housing costs, Federal, state and local taxes. Lets talk car insurance, homeowners insurance, eating out, food costs, utilities etc

The avg median single family home in the US is around $250K. That median number comes from a cross section of living in bumfuck egypt to some nice areas. Point in case. I have a very good friend. He just packed up and moved his family to Buckeye Az. YES he bought a house there, 3 bedroom 2 bath, brand new. Mortgage is $1397 a month not including insurance etc etc. HOWEVER it gets to be 125 degrees for days on end. His electric bill in comparison to your lil 7500 baht a month cost will be nothing coupled with the fact he will be stuck in his house because he will basically burst into flames if he goes outside. Apples to apples...your comparison needs to be same living area environments. Sure I could buy a house here in some redneck area where people do meth all day but do I want to?

Your POV completely depends on what you left here in the US when you moved and what area you moved to in Thailand. If you left a huge house in an affluent area to somewhere out in the rice fields of Isaan Thailand than I might be able to appreciate your grievances. But NO ONE told you too!!!. You made that decision all by yourself.

Some of us left a middle class home and area in the US and ended up in a nice middle class area in Thailand and it is cheaper. Simple as that. I happen to have a nice 3 bedroom home on about 2 rai and my electric bill is about 1100 baht a month. I have a well so water is free. I will not eeek out a living. I am comfortable. I have no mortgage, no property tax and minimal bills.

Back to cars again briefly. Compare a Honda Fit US Vs a Honda Fit TL, Compare a Toyota truck US to a Toyota truck TL. I do not think you did your homework at all. Now if you want a Super throw down van then that again is clearly your choice not all of us need or want it.

I could debate this with you all day. I did my homework, I did the comparisons, I moved to a location that suited me and what I wanted out of moving abroad I am not justifying anything I am refuting your comments.

In the end you did what you felt was best. I think you will find out later that back here in the US there are way more "hidden" costs for your personal freedoms. But as most do they find a way to justify it by going shopping to numb the pain..

This has been a experience reading all the posts.
I came to Thailand after the big wave and next winter Thailand had great bargains
of air fare, nice hotel, super big breakfast, temple tours, free pickup from airport and
to airport, for 890.00. Me and a buddy came over for a week then wife came over for 2 weeks. Was best most fun trip I ever took because of cheap prices, motorcycles for

3.00 a day and guest house corner room 3rd floor on top of hill in Pattaya 12.00 day
watch boats in harbor and see islands. loved it, came back 3 years to same room. I could afford anyplace in town but like the frugal lifestyle and spent about $1000 mon.
Ride 110 cc motorcycle down hill to Pattaya and about 1 mile north of sign saying Walking Street where many girls sitting on sea wall and listen to american music at
2 places close and buy a beer across street at circle-k for 70 cents and talk to girls
and listen to music and waves behind me. Maybe give a girl a ride home around to her apartment and I went on home alone, I was married plus had a rotor-router 5 years earlier, haha Had a great time Room had cable and got my Nascar races.
Spent time in Bangkok on the river pier 13, back packers area, talked to lots of people, nice small newer hotels for 13-$18.00. Boats on river about 30 baht.
Best trip I ever took. Thanks Thailand, wife won't go back wonder why?

There is a Chokchai steak house in Rangsit too. I ate there quite a few times as the company I worked for was close by. Cuts were nice, taste was darn good, price very reasonable.

^ I Love that cop out....used by many.

with that said Floridaborn....Pick a state...lets compare. I just gave you an AZ example. Montana? Oregon? Kansas? Iowa? Minnesota?

I will not dispute that you can find a house for $150k in the US. Question is... where is it? Kind of like TL Eh? Sure I can find a cement block house on 30rai and live like a peasant for virtually nothing, would I want to?

I think you and LivinLOS missed the message in many responders posts because you have the blinders on and you are bitter. I am not saying I disagree with your comments but you have not proven to me( or any others) that living in TL is more expensive then anywhere USA and that the quality of life is dismal in TL. Sorry but opinions don't work for an engineer, they are like Assholes and everyone has one. Populate with data....

Anyway, welcome back to the US. My Missus came with me and has been here for 2 years. While there are things she likes she cant wait to go back to TL. To many laws, rules, regulations, taxes, rude people(Could be a Cal thing), it costs too much to travel anywhere. Hotel prices ridiculous, non existent public transportation(A cab to go anywhere is $22 just getting in the door), Car insurance outrageous, Amusement parks costs(to go to Disneyland is 3,3000 baht a person now only to wait in hours of lines).... Shall I go on?

my 2 cents from the cheap seats with my rose colored glasses on...

I gave the state I know first hand already and everyone dismissed it so I shall allow them to remain ignorant.. Having said that even you, yourself said back in another thread, how expensive Ca was to live in, so it's not a cop out unless you don't believe what you're saying? FYI I know it is far more expensive for everything in Ca, especially cars, insurance and taxes, and everything related to owning one including gas, for one thing we (Florida) don't even have state income taxes..

Also I can find nice houses here since the crash, in the central part of Florida, in touch with many family things to do in a decent neighborhood for well under 100,000, 3/2 and even many with pools.. But in Thailand you don't even have the choice of a Disney park, actually yes you do, in Bangkok but few people know about it, it's off the radar for the most part, it's called Dream World and is associated. She wouldn't want to go back if she lived here I'd live almost anywhere besides Ca, I know a young American there that told me he felt Bangkok had better roads and such then Ca.. I couldn't believe him as that's not how I remember Ca. from my youth when I lived in Sand Diego for a few years, so if that's true you've nothing to compare to.. We definitely have better roads here in FL., of course there are those outlying areas that are still unpaved, again there is always extremes..

You know? I'm done trying to convince, I know what I know and it matters squat to me who listens, that's their blinders on not mine. I'm happier and less stressed then I have been in the last 10 years being back and appreciate so much more what I've been gifted as an American, it ain't perfect but as this discussion points out where is? So you have to carve out for yourself what's important to you versus a few restrictions or whatever. My boys are happy and healthy both enjoy school, have been and are consistent honor roll students and have friends, just being able to communicate health issues in western terminology is priceless, especially in an emergency which in my case is both spectrum's with 2 young sons and my getting up a bit in age I have piece of mind here with the EMT response and equipment if I need..

Actually data is irrelevant as it is too broad brushed.. In closing, I'd like to point out I haven't smelled a single uncovered sewer since being back and that in and of itself is worth the price even imagining what diseases floats on the winds let alone when it comes flooding into your house.

    Floridaborn,
As a point of reference for the audience, where were you living in Thailand before you happily exited back to the US?

I think I mentioned earlier I was in Bangkok, but if not now I have, spent a little bit of time in Phuket which was more like home climate and surrounding wise, I admit to not being a city boy so being in Bangkok didn't help but I also don't like being too far removed either..

There's some truth in that... Unfortunately I feel in some sense I wasted some very important peak years but sadly it was unavoidable ..

I did a 'homecoming' too, but it worked out quite differently. This after living in HK for twelve years. Then, after three years living in the Adelaide Hills, we sold up and moved to Thailand. Cold winters and cost of living were part of the decision, Thai wife too, but I also missed Asia. If, say, mrs sab had been filipino I'd probably be living there.

If someone chooses to move back to the USA after living in Thailand does not make them bitter.

I moved for the sake of my 14 year old's education

Now huff and puff all you want about how great Thai schools are and Thai international schools and I will say you are full of shit.

Thai's with Thai college educations are still idiots on the world stage.

You need to get out a USA map and find out there are many, many, many areas you can still buy a decent house for $60 to $70K. After Boeing pulled out of Wichita Kansas, the economy collapsed and their are housing deals galore as ONE example

You can still buy a wonderful house in places like Melbourne Florida for $100k that will put anything you have in Thailand to shame.

The beaches in Florida and the ocean are not all flooded will plastics, trash and other Thai bullshit either.

If you are paying 1100 a month for electric in Thailand it is damn clear you are not running AC and sweating your balls off everyday. You probably don't even have A/C

You are talking Honda Fit, the lowest possible cost car in Thailand? Who the hell drives those in the USA? Students? Kids? Poor people?

Compare a Lexus, Acure, BMW or Mercedes, Full Size 4 WD 4 door pickup, Hummer or something more like what an educated professional would be driving and not the cheapest thing you can find.

2 rai, wow! That is less than 1 US acre so you are quite short of being a Thai land baron.

Your house, no matter what you think and you probably don't even have a clue what is under the raster and paint on your walls will never, never, never reach the quality of a US house

When you put lipstick on a pig, it is still a pig. Same goes for Thai houses.

Do us all a favor and post up a photo of your Thai mansion. I really want see what kind of castle you are living in.

Questions are never answered such as if you are living a downgraded lifestyle since you moved from your own country?

The bottom line is there is no wrong or right answer no matter what you think.

Living in a tent in the USA is still cheaper and a tent with an air con is probably as comfortable as a Thai bed or straw mat.

What are you doing for retirement? 401? Health insurance? Life insurance? or blowing the entire future for living today in your concrete box on your massive 2 rai?

If I had no sense at all and only cared for myself, I might be right there in Thailand beside you.

However, since I have a little sense left, I will use the remainder of it to ensure my kids have a solid USA education where they will be able to support themselves the rest of their lives after I am dead.

With thai graduates guaranteed and stuck at 15,000 baht a month the rest of their lives, you have to be a pretty piss poor parent to let your kids grow up with that if you can provide them better.

By the way, the 2 rai, is in your wife's name as in case you forgot, in the USA you CAN own land, a house in your own NAME.

So in reality you never own anything in Thailand, you are just taking up space

Florida blows Thailand all to hell

Better everything all across the board

You are living in a fuckin dreamworld buddy. You sound like someone who never should have left your capitalist, consumer, bullshit life in Flori'duh.

I feel a little bad (just a little) that you haven't yet realized that what you have is not quite as important as whom you have.

Who really gives a fuck if your house in Florida is built better than a house in Thailand?

Who gives a fuck if I drive a Toyota and you drive a Hummer except for other small penis capitalist's trying to say "lookit me, lookit me".

If you insist on believing that Thailand is in any way, shape, or form more expensive than Florida then I restate my above post.

"You sir are a moron" and that's probably why you are more happy in a ghetto in Florida.

Oh and by the way this is all IMO. Nothing against you personally.

Well hey, it's good that you like where you are. Kindly be assured that most of the rest of us marooned here in far Siam are not prisoners though.

Must admit, the economics of the USA is way better than Oz these days. And a balmy Florida climate, sure I could think of worse.

Florida was not bad Sabang. Beautiful weather and beaches, but after 10 years I was tired of all the bullshit that builds slowly.

I started to hate driving. Florida ruined the driving experience for me. Nothing but streets laid out in grid patterns with stop lights at every intersection. Slow and mind numbing after awhile.

At least I can drive for more than 30 seconds without having to stop.
