Import Charges On Electronics Sent By Post

Does anybody know how many percent the import charges are on electrical items sent to Thailand by post?

The total value of the items I want is about $1200

Is there any way around it? I've heard things before about marking the item as a "Gift" and putting a visible invoice on the packaging but I can't really remember the details.

Also could the seller put a lower price on the visible invoice to lower the import charges?

    Any advise appreciated.

If you can get it through as a business item (necessary for a business to work) you pay 1%. If it comes through as a personal item it is taxed as a "luxury" - tax 30%. My experience, but I'm sure there are many variations to the theme

Not 100% sure, I know the private companies play ball harder so will try to hit you for any fuck ups you might make. All the agents will lie - 1% tax leaves nothing for anyone. See if you're lucky and it just turns up. Meanwhile get the backup ready with paperwork and receipts showing it's necessary business equipment (how it will be used etc). Not rocket science mate but you have to be a bit pushy.

Cheers will do. The reason I ask is that the wife orders clothes online a lot. Normally no charge but last month the guy delivering wanted 800bt import duty but he was just a delivery guy with no idea about it and there was no disputing it.

So maybe it would be sensible to be bringing them in as clothing samples for a tailoring/clothing company as opposed to personal items. Obviously only worth doing if it becomes a pain in the arse. Rather then use UPS/DHL maybe think about using the standard local postal service and classifying the parcel as a "small air packet". Have a snoop around on google.

USPS is the best way to send stuff from the US to here. Mark it as a gift and they can't be arsed to inspect it (usually).

The courier companies (UPS,FEDEX,DHL, etc) get a % of the import duties assessed so its in their interests to make sure the maximum possible is assessed.

Contrary to the above I would say USPS is the best, UPS like all others are authorized customs collectors so they will collect customs on anything they deem subject to duty.

Something small will probably get through anything large and heavy, will attract attention.

I would say make your purchasing decision based on paying 30% of the landed cost which includes the freight. Plus of course 7% VAT. If it comes in under the radar, say on a weekend, it is bonus.

Bullshit it is, I had some safety boots sent from the US into an export processing zone (no import tax) and I still got hammered cause those cunts process the import duties themselves and in turn go through customs here.

    Comprehend the export zone bit.

Putting that aside I have many items I purchase personally abroad (China/Japan/Hong Kong/UK/Australia/Argentina to name a few) sent to me at work (in an export zone) and only time I get hammered by customs is stuff that comes from the USA via USPS.

Send it by USPS and 95% of the time it will be passed Duty Free and delivered direct to your door by your regular Postman - occasionally however it will be stopped and assessed for Duty however, it's really "luck of the draw".

If you bring it in via Courier it will inevitably be assessed so you should make sure you know the correct Harmonised Customs Tariff Code for teh Product and the percentage of Duty charged on that in Thailand.

Also, it's nonsense to say that the Courier Companies get a percentage of the Import Duty charged by the Customs Department, they simply pass on to you whatever the Customs Department decides the Duty should be - they are COURIER COMPANIES; their business is collecting and delivering shipments, why should they waste their time and resources trying to get a lower Duty Rate for YOU when it is of absolutely no benefit to THEM!?

    Cheers for the replies.

So going from the list that Tetty posted in the link, the first item could be classed as a set of weighing scales having a weighing capacity not exceeding 30kg, taxed at 1% of the value.

and the second item could be classed as an automatic data processing machine taxed at 0%.

There's no Harmonised Customs Tariff Code on this list.

The company posting only uses UPS.

Do you reckon I should still send it marked as as a "gift" or do you reckon they would stick to these lists when assessing?

The Harmonised Customs Tariff is the numbers shown in the Columns "Heading" and "Sub-heading".

    Ok excellent cheers!

Edit: Would it be an idea to get the company who are sending to include the Harmonised Customs Tariff on the invoice?

    Yes, it would definitely help.

Also, once you know the equipment has been Shipped you should contact the UPS Agent in Bangkok, give them the Airwaybill No. etc. and the Harmonised Tariff Code which you believe should apply.

It's always better to give the Customs Department this information beforehand rather than leave it to them to determine and then for you to try to dispute it afterwards. (Also it gives them the impression that you know what you are doing so they will move on to easier prey!).

There is a space on the Customs Declaration form (CN22) specifically for the HS code.
This is the sticker that goes on the outside of your parcel
