    Boredom in Thailand

I have been thinking about this topic for some time. Recently, I have seen several posts where TD members mentioned boredom as partly to blame for excess alcohol consumption.

So I was wondering how many falongs who have lived in Thailand for more than 2 or 3 months, consider their lives in Thailand boring?

I spoke to a guy on a bus a while back, who had lived in a small village in Central Thailand for the last 4 years. He stated that he was bored senseless.

I also noticed that some of the long running threads on this forum seem to be mostly efforts to avoid boredom (i.e. How many people are really fascinated by a 4-month long thread giving a blow-by-blow description of plastering a wall?).

I don't get bored (usually) in Thailand because I read a lot and love learning (plants, animals, skill sets, etc). I also do consulting work that takes me to other countries for a few months out of every year.

So how do you deal with boredom? Or do you not find living in Thailand boring?

In all the time I spent in Thailand I was never bored. I was a man of leisure so never had work pressures or commitments to worry about. My time was my own and filled every minute of it.

I don't understand how if you don't work and have enough money, you could possibly get bored. Must be something wrong with you IMO.

Getting bored is just natures way of stopping us spending too much time doing something silly, eg it stops most of us spending the whole evening arguing about wheter a bit of water is the Thames or the Medway....
Trouble is this defence can make us restless too easy ,
The problem can be exacerbated when you are surrounded by chicken heads with sub 100 IQ's .

There's a thin line between being bored and being boring.

I do a lot of skinning (photoshop images) for video games. I know it's a senseless endeavor but it's time-consuming and I have a lot of time.

Bored,Boredom are words that represent how you might feel.

Every cnvt gets bored to some extent but some people won,t admit this along with other feelings.

How many blokes would admit that shagging their wife gets boring?

The best things that interest men/women become boring if done day in day out.

Sorry Rick but If I was sat on a bus and somebody starts to chat with me,I would usually be thinking of ways to end the boring conversation that is likely to persist.

Sometimes in those situations you only acknowledge the other person out of politeness.

    Did you get his number

The worrying thing is Rick I have a couple of friends who are bored here in the UK + drinking and are also heading off to rural Thailand with they're wives to retire later .

I also work beside people ages 70 + because they are so bored and it keeps them out the pubs.

I think to a point if your the type of person who is bored and drinking to relieve it in your home Country , your sure gonna be on a one way trip in rural Thai .

Its a shame for sure ,, allthough hobbies are not for everyone ,, its gonna be difficult if you have none and also have few people to speak a complete sentance to flowing in your home tongue
I'm proud of my 38" waist , also proud I have never done drugs

I got bored when I was there - not through doing nothing but with what I was doing most nights, which was drinking heavily.

I made a concious effort and went to the boxing gym and joined a football team (The British Club then Woodstock).

Quality of life is much clearer when sober!

I hear ya. Most of my friends were heavy drinkers, mostly Brits. I was deemed the DD, then I became the short stay guest, then later the no-show. Drunks are boring. The high point was this bloke from Black Dog Devon, funniest fook alive!

I really got bored when I retired myself from teaching and lived on Koh Lanta. You can only go sit on the beach so many times, or go on boat excursions. There was no Internet except for cafes. There were a couple of girls I liked, both Muzzies. More complicated than I wished for.

Have we not touched upon this subject matter in the past? Numerous times.

Boredom drives from the individual, less the situations, lifestyles, locales, and instances.

Stimulation will manifest itself in variable manners.

Boredom is a frame of mind. It's your minds way of telling you to go learn something.
That is the, lets say angel on your shoulder.

Then there's the devil on the other shoulder, which is procrastination, which we have inherited from our ancestors when food is scarce and we dont wanna exude more energy to get food, if we lose more energy chasing it.

Now what you have to do is.............

I'm a simple guy- as long as I have a bike, a decent gym, and an Internet connection, I'll never be bored no matter where I live.

Where would you be......or who would you be without the artificial gadgetry stimulation.

All this, belonging to familiar conditioning.

Hypothetically - what if there wasn't an electronic gadgetry industry to keep us distracted, amused, and numb?

For me I'm not sure I could call it Bored but I do miss sitting down and having a chat or a bullshit with someone I don't need to explain every comment too, but in saying that I would rather cut my throat than listen to some tourist sitting next to me telling me the 20 year old farm girl that can only speak 10 words in English loves him and is different!!!!!

I'm talking about another expat who understands what living here is like and where we can relate to each other, so like I say not sure that's Bored or just something I miss

    ^^

Probably read more (I used to go through two books per week before the net came along).

But what if written language has never been invented? Then what would I do...?

You can keep extending it as far as you like- the bottom line is that I would adapt myself to the conditions of whatever world I was living in and find a way to keep myself amused.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

I agree totally, if one has his health, a bit of money and some personality how can one get bored. ????

Have absolutely no time for people when I hear them say they are bored.

I find them pathetic and being bored is what one hears from children.

On the other hand if one is banged up in hospital with cancer and they say they are bored I can quite understand why they feel that way.

I'm much the same as Failsafe as I do consider these things the necessity of life.

I need the bike because I love to just putter around the place without the hassle of a car.

I need a Gym as I consider that to live well you need to feel well, be strong and fit to power on into older age. I enjoy a drink but keep it under control.

The Internet is the worse for me now as I'm totally addicted to how it opens up the world and plugs me into every thing I need research wise concerning my travels and life in general.

All the other stuff follows after these 3 things.

Thats great CT. We do similar things to keep the mind occupied.

I work with 3d modeling and texturing for games (Skyrim ATM). It is very time consuming and enjoyable. One of many things to keep me entertained in the village.

Here is my latest model for Skyrim.

I'm not saying it was Aliens, but it was Aliens!
