I would probably just invent it. I would start with English and then just start my way working through the other languages. Would keep me busy between beers for a week or two.

Just because one isn't bored, doesn't mean that one is productive.

Doing nothing isn't necessarily boring - not when there's downloaded television to watch hours of, not while there is Dirty Dog House topics on which to post drivel for literally tens of thousands of posts (per person)

All these things kill time on the journey to the grave quite effectively.

But it isn't productive. Its nothing to feel proud of.

Was it Rousseau who said that man's greatest failing was the inability to sit quietly in a room? Perhaps someone with time on their hands can look that up in Wikipedia for me.

On a similar note that some one,s mentioned , I think it was Tel ,, IF you are lucky enough to have an internet connection + a decent tab or lappy the whole world library is in your hands , for me its a complete reverse to school , I just wanted out to work .

Now I just cannot seem to learn and glean enough info , and not just about my various hobbies , whole new areas of interest can come into play .

I certainly enjoy and make the most of each new day
I'm proud of my 38" waist , also proud I have never done drugs

To my shame, in my two years in Thailand, I had a lot of spare, underemployed time, but I didn't use it productively at all - no superior knowledge of Thai, nor the great Thai novel in draft. Just mucked about on Thaivisa - which I suppose is better than going to Nana Plaza.

Working with Butterfly was the most productive thing I did. Otherwise it was downtime, in what was probably my most potentially active years.

I didn't find it boring time, but it was still nothing to look back upon with satisfaction.

productivity means nothing, unless you achieve something good. Some people are busy all the time and produce rubbish

achieving nothing can be a good thing too, as long as it is a good nothing

Waking up in the morning and going to bed at night is satisfaction enough for me, don't need to run around all day like a mad man justifying to myself that Ive been especially productive as its been productive just being alive.

When you get to be 55 one has lost quite a few friends and associates to illness, accident and diseases.

All these people that I know who have died would be extremely satisfied to be alive today and would say today has been especially productive.

Hence why I do not entertain people who tell me they are bored.

    Wasters I recon.

I get very bored at times, for me it's a seasonal thing. This time of year it's so hot that you would have to be mad to do physical work, the thermometers say 37 degrees in the shade at the moment.

Next comes the big boredom, the wet, now I live in a jungle village, one road in and out. When the big rains start, they go on for days, sometimes weeks without let up. Powers off more than it's on, bridges are under water, kids can't get to school and are stuck in the house all day. You sit listening to the pounding rain on the roof, no power, no net, no TV and no cold beer. Waiting for the bridges to clear so you can go to town for a night.

That's the whiskey time, after that the sun comes out, the rubber flows and the money comes, and the world is fun again. Jim

I sometimes envy people when they say they are bored.

I live and work in Thailand so 4 weeks at sea in the Gulf of Thailand and i am working hard 12 to 14 hrs a day. 4 weeks at home with a house build still ongoing, a lovely wife who, however, creates incredibly long lists of 'things to do when Dave gets back from work', a mental (although lovable) 6 year old daughter that needs ferrying back and forth from school, visits to friends, assorted activities at the weekend etc etc plus the usual myriad of day to day obligations.

Numerous friends from my years i used to stay in Singapore that turn up on my doorstep on a Thursday night for a long weekend demanding to be taken on a whistle stop tour of all the best hoors dens and drinking establishments.

When i first came here to live, i was single, a piss head and a mad shagger and never had time to get bored as i managed to fit in a few hobbies too.

Sometimes i feel i'd do anything to feel bored.

Count your blessings i'd say! lol

    Dave

^ Agreed. Time is the most valuable thing there is. People don't realise how precious it is until they don't have any.

Having too much time that you are struggling to fill, is a bizarre notion to me.

I don't understand how if you don't work and have enough money, you could possibly get bored. Must be something wrong with you IMO.

u spend your life on here - must be something wrong with you and be more bored than most

I spoke to a guy on a bus a while back, who had lived in a small village in Central Thailand for the last 4 years. He stated that he was bored senseless.

I also noticed that some of the long running threads on this forum seem to be mostly efforts to avoid boredom (i.e. How many people are really fascinated by a 4-month long thread giving a blow-by-blow description of plastering a wall?).

I don't get bored (usually) in Thailand because I read a lot and love learning (plants, animals, skill sets, etc). I also do consulting work that takes me to other countries for a few months out of every year.

So how do you deal with boredom? Or do you not find living in Thailand boring?

    RickThai
hard to get bored in Bangkok but in a small village for sure it could get boring.

I grow herbs myself and usually find things to do but I wouldn't want to live in a small village.

decent city u have live music, markets, restaurants, malls, buzz going on

u ever lived in a small western town? they are boring too

I really got bored when I retired myself from teaching and lived on Koh Lanta. You can only go sit on the beach so many times, or go on boat excursions. There was no Internet except for cafes. There were a couple of girls I liked, both Muzzies. More complicated than I wished for.

lanta has fuck all nightlife. I got bored after 3 days there

Easy to understand how one could get bored living isolated in a Village.

For me it must be Bangkok or Chiang Mai preferably both. Plenty of option available 24/7.

No village or small town life for me.

Google my name and Thailand and I will pop up, rubber. I'm 140 km from Ubon,, But the big town of Buntarik has around 8 short time hotels and god knows how many karaoke bars, Lao land border, no farangs. We live about 27 km into the jungle from there, far enough away . but too far to come home if you have had a few. Jim

Lots of great posts and interesting takes on boredom.

I generally get bored in large cities more than I do in the smaller cities. In a large city you spend so much time getting from point A to point B, that it is almost not worth going anywhere. Although there is plenty to do, many things have gotten so expensive that I don't want to spend the money (I am by nature a cheap engineer, and spending $80.00 USD to see a so-so performance is not worth the money to me).

The mid-day sun can get oppressive at times. That's why I enjoy going out and about during the early mornings and late afternoons. As for mid-day, Trane rules!
