    Port, Sherry in Thailand?

I have looked all over for a few decent bottles of Port and Sherry, but the stuff does not seem to exist in Thailand.

I managed to get a few bottles shipped out from an on-line outfit in the UK.....but
it's bloody expensive with the shipping costs and the customs people give me a hard time about it.

Anyone know of a source here?

Port; anything from Portugal that's been in the bottle for more than three weeks...... Cockburns, Crawfords etc.

Sherry: I would settle for Harvey's Bristol Cream or similar....

Maybe I should withdraw the "decent" bit huh? Just confuses people.

So anyone know where I can buy Port and Sherry in Thailand.....?

Villa supermarket usually carry a range of Port. About 6-7 different bottles, Cockburns and Taylor's are there for sure.

Yes, I prefer "real" where possible...
I've checked both local Tops outlets, Tesco, Big C etc, but no luck. Villa (for sure) sounds promising.....I believe Udon Thani has one now....so that's my nearest Villa Market. You would think such simple pleasures could be found in Khonkaen.....but all I get is blank stares when I ask about it....probably because the local farangs are content to survive on Leo and Chang export....

I will be in Roiet tomorrow. The market in Roiet Plaza has a surprising selection wines. Will see if they have a Port. Decent or otherwise.

You just never know. I can access a good variety of wines, but no Port or Sherry...of any description...which I think a bit odd....but then the local Tesco has stopped stocking things like Weetabix and fresh bread so one has to become a kind of hunter-gatherer around here. Still lots of edibles out in the trees and ponds ....

I think you'll have to wait until you are in Bangkok. Villa's wine shop upstairs on the Sukhumvit branch has a nice selection of port, sherry and madeira.

Qualified your decent to real as in "not from the town of Portugal in China". You're just after run of the mill port and Sherry.

Makro in KK apparently has a drop apparently but perhaps your best bet is to do a tour of all the boozers / farang places in town and if the place has some, ask where they get it from. Most places will add a bottle to their next order for you.

Thanks....I'm not due a trip to BKK until November.....but I'm going to visit with Villa in Udon and if they don't have what I want, I'll try to get them to order in a couple of cases for me. Desperate measures are sometimes necessary on the frontier.......

I've managed to bring in small amounts from the UK on a few occasions.....but I made the mistake of having them ship 6 bottles in one carton, and the customs guys went apeshit....impounded the bloody lot and I had to make a special trip to negotiate the release of my booze. Not one of my real stealth moves.

The import duty, excise tax, VAT, health tax, and municipal tax all added up can make it a very expensive proposition if they decide to intervene. In the end I got lucky and ran into a decent fellow who fucked around for an hour or so and finally decided to call it grape juice....so I got away with a straight 10%.....got a stern warning not to try that again..... I'm probably flagged in some database and they are just waiting for the next attempted Port shipment to throw me in the slammer.....

Always a bit of a risk I suppose....but so far I've never had a spoiled bottle. I think the fortified wines can stand a fair temperature range as long as the exposure time to heat is not too long. Just another one of the risks of frontier life......

whats wrong with getting a trusted mate/ relative to specially pack a single bottle in a special homemade package disguise it as religious water and send it thru the post recorded delivery.

It's fine, and in fact a little bit like what I've been doing. You can even get away with two bottles if they are mixed in with jam, Andrews liver salts, and Hob Nobs......but it takes a case a month to maintain some semblance of civilization, so the supply chain is just too slow, cumbersome and at one bottle a time...pretty expensive....

Thanks to my dad, makes his own fortified, in Madeira, sent over in a three little oak wood barrel like the one bellow its absolutely gorgeous thing to drink from after dinner,
actually i may have a sip after lunch, just so i can cope with cnuts coming in for petrol.
