Tax, I rather think he's an American.

Essentially, this makes him prey to infantilism and the concomitant handicap of thinking everything can be reduced to their level of imbecility. A common symptom of this condition is the belief that " negative thinking " is a bad thing and one only has to be positive about all matters for everything to be rosy in their little wonderland. Buddhism attracts these idiots in their droves since intellectual impairment is no bar to membership.

Generally, hypocrisy is the oil that lubricates their thought processes and for most they are simply refugees from a system that has little need of them. Scratch a farang, self professed Buddhist and one usually finds a failure of some sort.

I can relate to all this happening in Surin. You can't control things in Thailand the way you do in the west. Families are mostly non-existent in the northeast unless they are Chinese. You have to deal with all the neighbors whenever you do anything.

As for things I like about Thailand, well these days I less in my list but I'll put down a few.

I like the cheap food and drink.
I enjoy the friendly people and their smiles.
The country kids are appreciative of the things you do for them. They remind me of kids back when I was a kid. I can have them pick up all the litter in the neighborhood for an ice cream.
The buses are cheap and reliable most of the time.
The skytrains and subways are better than where I come from.
Life is mostly for the moment. Despite the problems people don't worry to much.

In years past, I would put the easy sex down but these days I'm not into that to much for various reasons. It is a good thing for some. Thailand's failures really overwhelm me these days more than does its good side. If you live life like a party and don't worry about tomorrow, you can be happen in Thailand right now. Someday it might all catch up with you so enjoy the moment.

I've been sorting out a lot of old photos recently, very sad. A reminder of just how different and IMO vastly better life in Thailand is.

Anyway, to the things already mentioned I would add, the ability to eat outside 365 days a year. Not to mention the kind of food you eat. Yes you can get most things in the UK, but in reality, when do you, and how much would a bucket of seafood cost from the fish counter at Asda? A fecking fortune that's how much.

I suppose lots of people from other countries can eat outside a lot, Australia and West coast USA for example, but in the UK it's a real treat each year when the weather's good enough for a BBQ. In Thailand it was almost a nightly occurrence.

^Looks good! I can get all the cheap, fresh seafood here in Korea. I live near the coast so it isn't a problem. They eat a lot of squid though..bleh.

Going back to the original OP..I'd have to say I love...
    -most of the people
    -beautiful beaches
    -muay Thai
-the weather (sometimes it is too hot though)
    -the food
    -massages
    -green
    -the availability of western products

Lets be mindful that just because someone is a Buddhist, (whether for real or as a pose), that doesn't mean they are an enlightened Buddhist.

99.9% of Thais hardly espouse enlightened Buddhism.

It's a long path to enlightenment.

However ! Members are right to call out RickThai for his distaste of homosexual acts. As he develops a sense of detachment, he will not care about what others do (unless it breaks precepts and Laws). He will just feel benign indifference.

Teakdoor is not the place to start or participate in polemic negative-minded threads for one persevering diligently in the path to Nirvana.

I also like the animals of Thailand. From the calm, accepting manner of a buffalo as it patiently endures contrasts of unrelenting heat followed by the violence of a tropical deluge, to the exotic mystery of pangolins, you never know exactly what you might run into in Thailand.

My Thai BIL went out to feed some chickens one morning and found a 3 meter python (but no chickens). So much for fresh eggs for breakfast.

Man are you lost. 70% of one's intelligence is based in how well he has mastered his language. You fail.

And intelligence doesn't really have all that much to do with your formal education. What you have done with what you've learned and your accuracy in deduction does.

But the final result is how well you live and how well you survive by adapting to environmental changes. And if you think imagining yourself as someone who has merged into Thai society makes you clever you're wrong. Jeez, I went to live in a society 100 years behind my own and was able to get people to smile at me. Doh!

Take whomever you consider the most intelligent person you've ever heard of and parachute him/her into the Amazon (does that place still exist :-), watch how those stupid, shoeless, ugly little brown people out-score him. Who's more intelligent now?

One thing that makes your "dullard" wife smarter than you is her being in her country, her language, the survival skills she had mastered by the time she was 10.

    1.Thai lady beautiful too mutt!
    2.Thai food aroy mak mak!
3.Thailand not too expensive same Farangland.
4.Thai people always happy! Not complain and awk the question like Farang all the time. Why falang always awk some question? I'm so boring to hear from them about the question everytime.

5.In Thailand we have freedom drive the car anytime, any way, any style, it's very comfortable when we drive the car, even we want to crash you can do it's norman, not too seriot same Farlangland you mutt to drive the car very seriot, or police seriot and awk you "Why you crash!?" "You idiot!" "Why you drive the car anywhere on the road!?" In Thailand no body awk you that question if you have accident or you don't want to use the turn signal in your car. We can choose. Or maybe we drive very well and police complain and we have to pay. So we not worry any more about that, no need to be seriot, because you can have problem anyway, so there is no problem, just drive comfortable, its your style.

    6. In Thailand you don't have to think seriot about some problem you will have. You can always do the wrong thing and enjoy. Nobody will make you seriot and tell you, "you don't do that," You can have your problem later, it your problem, and it later and before everything smooth and so calm, it's nice and smooth style. Farang always say "Don't do that! You musn't do this." Hey! Why not!? Just do! Have cheap electrical installlation you can save 500 baht is ok for me and don't complain later house already burned down. You save 500 baht, what you want!? Why you always cry about that house, its already gone, why you can't just let something go, what will happen about anything, anytime we don't know, so don't seriot.

    7. In Thailand we can imagine everything and live the life. It not polite people tell you, you are tosser. In Thailand maybe somebody say, "Oh we have landed on the moon," you must to say, "Yes, I like the green moon with the tree where we landed," even you don't think we on the moon and is green. It's so boring like farang, "It's not green! We not in the moon? Why you say that? What you talk about? Idiot!" Or "Hmmm…that's interesting…it looks green to you." What? Why it so interesting? Farang always complaining, asking question, have some comment it so boring! What? I have to fill out some papers for you now, the liar report from President of Farangland? Just we on the moon and maybe you think it is green, OK!? Only now maybe! Maybe I have eye problem?! Why you want to make me think about eye problem. Tomorrow maybe normal color, so why you seriot, so boring! Oi!

    8. In Thailand we can say, "hey, fuck you!" to the English teacher! It's not impolite, its just some English words, it very funny for the student! I know for farang, "Hey fuck you teacher…" its too seriot.

    9. In Farangland, people always say, "Hey! What? I'm talking to you!Goddamnit!" I know what you say! But I don't answer, its so boring I always have to say, "OK!" or "sure!" "uh huh!" Or I have to awk you some question and you not really want to answer, but I cannot to say nothing or you angry, "Why you not listen!" Thai we don't have to answer with some nonesense and make arguement and problem and headache same farang.

    10. In Thailand we can change the time. I am tired so I don't have to tell you I already change our meeting. Why you not know anyway, why you not awk me before? Farang always angry about that, you change the time you not tell anybody, I'm waiting for you and you don't answer your phone.

    11. In Thailand if you don't understand me, its no problem for me. In Farangland people say, "What the fuck are you talking about!" or "Why you never tell me?" It always so seriot. Here you mutt to undertsand, even I don't tell you. Even Thai people cannot understand, some bad Thai people always complain cannot understand Thai people, "Hey! Why? I am Thai people!" Good Thai people its no problem for them, they just say "I don't know what you say. It's no problem for me too."

    12. In Thailand I can sell anything broken to you and why you not check it before? You already give me the money, and so I don't have. Why you awk me that question, about the money, I not have! So silly, so why you awk me?

    13. We can always enjoy the doctor visit in Thailand too mutt. We can receive so many interesting kind of medicine and have many experience with medicine or we can make a kind of medicine collecting hobby if we don't like to take. We don't have to awk the doctor some question again, "Hey! Why you give me this medicine? How many times I have to take? Why I have to pay if no need to take, anyway?" Its just more question no need to awk anybody. It just some headache to awk again some farang question. You just take it, or you don't take it, up to you, usually it just some vitamins for health no need to worry.

    14. We can go to concert anytime. Maybe Pu Yai Ban is very kind and have many concert 4 am if you want to, its not hot at that time and plenty of time before work. Farang have daytime concert in the park it too hot, or night time concert, everybody so tired. Here we can enjoy, everybody it neighborhood, no need to leave your bedroom, you can enjoy and listen in there.

I like arriving in Thailand each year, twice a year. I enjoy chatting with farangs I meet while in Thailand, and Thai food. Cheap food and beer. I enjoy not giving a crap about Thailand, Thai politics, Thai corruption or Thai people..... Not my problem.

In due course I like leaving even more, twice a year.

Actually I think you are wise to avoid getting involved in Thai politics. Good or bad, Thailand's future should be determined by the people of Thailand.
