Interesting how a simple question of whether it appears that Thais are becoming less tolerant and more antagonistic towards falongs has turned into such hodge-podge of insults, personal attacks, and political attacks. It appears there are a lot of unhappy people on this forum.
Just a few posters gave their opinion on the topic. One poster who has lived in Thailand for 48 years seem to think the Thais are more tolerant and friendlier.
Perhaps this is so, but I personally have not seen this. I feel safe in Thailand, primarily because I don't drink, do drugs, solicit whores, or hang out in places where these activities (and the people drawn to these activities) occur. I spend most of my time in the Kamphaeng Phet area.
Being extremely well-integrated into my wife's family, I've learned that even middle-class Thais are becoming more wary of violent crime, and many good Thais actually worry about falongs safety in today's Thai society.
The Thai's traditional respect for others is being replaced by a "get what you can, while you can" mentality.
Yes, even many Buddhist monks have fallen into "consumerism", but what any individual (or group of individuals) do, has nothing to do with the teachings of the Lord Buddha.

As a Theravada Buddhist, I am fully aware of my khamma and strive to gain merit by my present actions. The wisdom of the Buddha teaches that what has happened, has happened and to waste energy in regretting for what you have done previously, does no one (including yourself) any good.
By working at practising Buddhism in the present you can become a better person, and hopefully, improve your khamma so that you will be reborn at a higer level.
I wonder when farangs will quit putting up with Thais.
I thought i read somewhere that while tourism to Thailand is up, tourists from Europe are down.
Not sure on North American tourist numbers, but I doubt they make up a very large percentage of total tourists. I have a feeling North Americans who want a holiday to somewhere warm, head to Central or South America. This is all just personal experiance, I just know when i travel to Thailand, i rarely meet Americans or Canadians, and I guess to be technical, Mexicans either.
