A famous monk/abbot/charlatan in Udon died a couple of years ago. His will stated that all his worldly possessions (being a monk should be a bowl and an orange bedsheet) go the the Thai government. We're talking a few BILLION baht here.
Fucking wanker.
you should be glad that family members care that much about you...the time to start worring is when they dont give a dahm about you...relax and enjoy it while it lasts
It's not even the start of a contest. It's all about control, power, and ultimately money. Thing with money is it is only worth what you can openly use and enjoy. How much you got stashed away while having to park your arse off on the floor making primal noises is irrelevant, or how much you die with. Worthless figures.
I won't go into it, a blind man without a stick can see it. Level by level, the happy clappers has them all beat hands down. No knee-jerk defence of all things Eastern will make reality go away.
First set foot in Thailand 48 years ago. Since then Thais have become far less antagonistic toward falangs.Originally Posted by RickThai

I would take Dave Barry's maxim -“A person who is nice to you, but rude to the waiter, is not a nice person”- a step further, replacing "the waiter" with "strangers," in Thailand as anywhere else. For all the xenophobic BS we have to put up with from the (notoriously corrupt, just ask any Thai) government, I've always found Thais to be generally hospitable people. I think that was once the secret of their success in the tourism trade, but the more tourism becomes an "industry" the more it brings out the worst tendencies toward exploitation.

Still a serial idiot...
Is there a hell in Christianity? Depends on whom you ask. I think the people running any religion discover at some point that if there isn't a hell they have to invent one. The Four Noble Truths just aren't enough for some people- they need to think that if they steal someone's husband they will come back as a preta (not to mention some people just need things to be more theatrical- take my wife. . .please!) I'm guessing ltnt means that Thais are less judgmental in some ways than westerners (about gays, for example)- one doesn't find Thai preachers on street corners telling us we'll burn in hell for accepting same-sex marriage. Of course, this juxtaposes nicely with the overarching need for conformity.

In pure Buddhism no hell but as practiced here lots of Hindu and Buddhist mythology infused. I would say the murals and paintings in many Thai temples depict hell. Known as yom-ma-lohk (underworld).Originally Posted by ltnt

They roam around every morning barefoot in their Saffron robes.
Are same sex marriages allowed in Thailand?
I do not think Thais accept it either. Thais see gays as entertainment, goof for a laugh - kind of like a minstrel or court jester - but not accepted and never seen as equal or normal.
No but has been considered.

The Thais in my area are nice enough. They're ignorant for the most parts of our antics down south, or even nearby comparatively sub-dued Chiang Mai. The few falang around here generally keep to themselves and are a decent bunch of blokes from what I seen so far.
Demons are thought to be characters who impart some form of sin, such as alcoholism, murders, gambling, etc. Similar to those sins mentioned by Christian beliefs.
Wats have these symbols to remind the Buddhist believers that there are many evils and temptations in the world and to be careful not to follow this path of evil. Images simply make it perceived as a reality.
It is simply not part of Buddhism to be sent to hell. You are simply reincarnated as many times as it takes for you to get it right. There is no punishment other than one's own Karma earned through lifetimes of reincarnations.
If you choose to believe in a hell that's up to you, but Buddhism does not believe in it as the ultimate reward for being a sinner or evil person.
Animism also has great influence in Thai belief systems and is closely tied to Buddhist belief in Thailand.
Star reading is also part of the Buddhist belief system if you care to go there in Thailand's Wat system. Always tying events to auspicious days or months.
I do think its odd that so many are so ready to condemn RickThai for expressing his personal belief in Buddhism? Good thing he didn't say he converted to Islam?
