Same as any other country, keep your wits about you., and the chances are slim in feeling threatened.

Dunno why. Despite Cambodia being more "edgy" than Thailand, I'd say you're far more likely to get on the wrong side of locals in Thailand than in Cambodia.

The Thai's are far more jaded about farang than the Khmer. In most parts of Cambodia outside Siem Reap, PP and Sihanoukville a white face is still a novelty, it's probably only a matter of time before they tire of the droves of fuckwits constantly arriving there though.

Already you can go to the most out of the way Thai hick village and find some sweaty old white fucker hanging about somewhere, there's nothing remotely unusual about it. Familiarity breeds contempt, even the Thai peasants are sick of the sight of white men, except in circumstances where they can make an earner from them.

Don't really blame them either, as they become increasingly affluent they can increasingly afford to show their disdain for the people who - while bringing a certain level of prosperity - have also brought negative societal influences and/or exploited their own society/cultural values to their own benefit.

Face. There's only so long the Thai mentality will tolerate being humble and subservient, once they're comfortable enough...fuck you, we never really liked you wankers anyway.

I'd hate farang if I was Thai, most definitely.

Historically, there is this unconscious mindset amongst Euro-types that looking highly upon them should come instinctively by the non-cast of the world.
These basics ideals and attitudes bring on more unnecessary hardship and negative feelings for the Westerners than needs to be.

And most still don't get it and they continue to wonder why they'll always be considered a foreign entity and struggle with themselves.

Well i am sitting on the porch for the last hour and have had around about 20 locals give me a genuine hello and a friendly smile, must be my charming good lucks and charm, and not one of them tried to take anything from me.

seems some Thais are pretty accepting.

Will the Thais turn on the farang before they do their wealthy corrupt government officials and others here? Will the have-nots go after the disgusting wealthy families as they did in Cambodia and started to do in Indonesia in 1997. Can the political power be controlled by Chinese forever with little true Thai bloods in government? I'd guess if there are any disgruntled people in Thailand, they certainly aren't that way because of western foreigners.

As long as those with power can dumb-down the information the masses get through the TV and Internet, they can keep the people mostly under their control. But should a time come when those who truly desire to be heard finally are able to control the national microphones, who knows what could happen. Just look how Bangkok lit up in 2010. If Thaksin hadn't come in with his populist policies maybe Thailand's poor would be even closer to the edge right now knowing what the old establishment dressed in white and gold really think of Thailand's poor.

There will always be people annoyed by farangs but are farangs really the people who are holding back the Thais from freedom, power, opportunity and wealth?

Secretly, they harbor a desire to turn on you and take whats yours- including your woman. Better get out, before it's too late.

Alas, the knife scars on my stomach, arms, and legs would seem to contradict that statement (and yes, I have "cut" people in fights and robbed others at knifepoint in my youthful days).

Thankfully as a Buddhist, I realize that the past no longer matters.

RickThai... What kinds of areas are you in when your family escorts you? It pays to be wary but you might want to ask your family why they do that. Might be interesting to learn if they are close with you. I had a good Thai friend that really enlightened me about a few things when I first moved here. Unfortunately he died of a brain tumor but one thing he said is that "a farang in Thailand can not walk alone." He meant that figuratively though in that if you don't have someone watching your back, you are going to get taken.

So, what on earth makes you think just because you subscribe to a doctrine of abstention paving the way to cosmic oneness it confers anything of significance to either your actions or utterances?

Nothing worse than posturing converts piddling on about their reformation as if it matters a flying fuck to the price of fish.

Dying a million deaths springs to mind. It's not a conscious thing, it's in the subconscious, always there, always on the lookout.

Since childhood I've been a loner, and have always gone into the worst areas at the worst times simply because this is where life is at the raw edge and where I can see the best and worst of human nature and learn most about the human mind.

I never carried a gun or any other protection. I've felt threatened once. Never been attacked. Always decently dressed. Never tried 'to look mean' and never been scared. I was simply there, doing my thing, not on the lookout for potential trouble but aware of what's happening around me.

Being 'on the lookout' sends a signal. And it will attract trouble.

One day, who knows, I may be attacked. But it'd be only once in my life I'd feel uncomfortable, not constantly.

^The Thais are extremely tolerant, up to a point (everyone has their line in the sand). Lords of the Rim goes into all of this for each country around the pacific rim - the picture they draw of Thailand has the ethnic Thais and the Chinese co-dependant with neither either being able to survive without the other! As for us, we are a mere side show but I can't help but notice that the bib do little more than pay lip service in bringing to book criminals who attack us - often turning a blind eye even to murder and rape, sadly

I can almost guarantee in Rick's case, it's nothing short of Western fashion borrowing from the exotic and mysterious Orient.
