Would You Live in Thailand If Prostitution Was Halted?

I wonder how many foreigners come to Thailand just for cheap sex with beautiful Thai women?

Many of them eventually wind up married to someone they met in a bar, and settle down (more or less).

So my question is: How many of you would live and stay in Thailand if prostitution was almost completely shut down due to rigorous enforcement and penalities?

I know many will vent about how that will never happen, but that is not the question.

As a young man stationed in Taipei, Taiwan in 1972, the city was full of bars and clubs where the girls were beautiful and cheap ($2.00 shorttime).

Today the city is pretty much cleaned up, and foreigners would have to go underground to find girls. A very risky business for the average Joe.

So it is possible (if not probable) that this could eventually happen in Thailand.

Last time I was there, the Block was still going strong- not RnR days obviously, but no shortage of gwei oriented bars (unless you're comparing to the Pattaya/Angeles of this world). That were 12 years ago though..

Anyway, it would be irrelevant to me, although I'd miss the easy banter & craic of the Pattaya type beer bars. ain't gonna happen though. First, they'd have to make prostitution illegal.

Quite an assumption, is it not, that the only reason many a non-Thai would meet a Thai girl is due to prostitution? And, that interaction is how so many end up married to a Thai woman?

Rather crude assumption, IMO? Why not just meet and marry a prostitute in the country of origin? How would that be any different?

I would still at least holiday in Thailand even if it was a no-no to use whores. In fact it may save me a few headaches! A few Baht would be saved I reckon. No more waking up with the hangover of doom, only to find "new friends" with me.

Seems a valid assumption to me. I have not met a single person who would have come here initially or remained in Thailand without "the bar scene". Don't be fooled by the fact punters can find a girl 20 - 30 years younger who is not from a bar, it is the same thing .. ... the girls need money and prefer 1 customer. Nothing wrong with it but that is the case.

I was a little cautious about coming to Thailand because of the perceived notion that every mid-age man buying a plane ticket was a sex tourist, but a group of backpackers in Peru convinced me that was not completely true so I took their advice and went. Good advice the country has a lot to offer, beautiful scenery and culture and I did't even think about hanging out at "bar-girl" bars. On my second trip I met and eventually married a lovely woman who has made my life a joy.

I think the fact that I know that within 10 minutes, if I fancy it, I can get a fkcu with a really cute asian girl all for the princely sum of 500 baht is enough.
I used to do security for a couple of knocking shops in England, and frankly I wouldn't have touched any of the girls in those places with Ants let alone mine.
However, when I first came to Thailand the bar scene WAS one of the reasons that I made my home here.
Actually might pop down to the VIP in Ban Phe later for a quicky.. just a thought.
