    3RD Class Train

So I'm in Bangkok and going back to Khon Kaen tonight... Should've listened to my gf and book in advance... Almost everything was booked so I'm gonna be in shitty 3rd class. How bad this 9 hours ride is gonna be ?

Did 17 hours on a shitty bus from Vancouver to Calgary right after flying back from Thailand because every flight to Calgary we're too expensive. Wished I had 5-6 Valium.

I suggest arriving 15 minutes early.
Then, make your way to the restaurant car and nab a table.
Order ale and light bar snacks.
    Order more ale
    Repeat.
Pass out on the table, and as you've spent a bob or two in there they won't disturb you.

44 hours after leaving BKK I was in Calgary... The thing is with Canadians buses is that the seats probably only recline 2 inches and there was a smelly native just in front of me.

That's the way i've spent every journey on a Thai train , even when i have had a bunk in the sleeper compartment , i still seem to spend the better part of the journey in the buffet car with a bottle of Sangsom and a couple of packets of L&M's , thirteen or so hours soon fly's by :-)
    Travel lightly ....

Who says one has to take a train....and third class at that.

VIP express coaches from BKK to KK are frequent.
    Comfortable.

Me neither. Did a 3rd class trip back from Had Yai once after a visa run. Once me at this Italian bloke had finished a glom of Mekong I don't remember a thing. Woke up in Bangkok propped up against the carriage side, covered in my own puke.

Still, at least I was'nt robbed. I think the puke was a good deterrent.

Gonna be uncomfortable, dreadfully slow and yer not even guarenteed a seat

I made a trip to Buriram by 3rd class and would never do it again. The Coach is a much better opton and the VIP coach is worth paying the extra.

Also beware of the pick pockets operating at Hualumpong. There's a massive scrum down when the train arrives to try and get a seat and they will try to pick you during the crush.

Take the $50 USD plane from BKK to KK. To me, its the only way to go. There in an hour or so.

Bangkok to Khon Kaen, 9 hrs; you sure bud ! i've done Bagkok to BuaYai 10 hrs. Crap journey, goes on for ever and every time you nod off some twat want's to sell their food to you. Mini-bus takes 6hrs, but some drivers are seriously bad. The choice is your's...

Yes I made it ! Got drunk in the restaurant wagon with a Peruvian guy and his Lao wife. Pretty cool dude. Woke up an hour before arriving in KK. Here I am back in Khon Kaen wondering if I should buy a new fighting chicken.
