I see much of the same here in central Thailand and it worries me about my retirement decision. If things are only going to get worse i.e. when the parents get too old and cannot work or support the little f*ckers .... then what does this mean to us farang in regard to safety and security.

Same here with BIL, 29 years old, only owns the clothes on his body (that I bought for him) drinks, does stupid things and when I ask why he had become this way, same story, alway got everything, not have to really work for a living, asked for money to go to school, but never went to school, spent his time playing in the ineternet shop, gets food and a place to sleep from parents and some money.

Parents have shop, but he is not allowed in shop! Goes to other shop in other town and rakes up 6,000 baht in debts! Ofcourse shopowner askes if parents can pay for it! I said, please dont, he is 29 and should take care of his own (debts)!

Absolutely useless. Glad he is in Taipei now working for an electronic firm (although I had to pay for the ticket, but gladly did). At home he is the talk/fight of the day, better he is in Taipei for a couple of years.

If he was a good guy, wanting to work etc. I would have paid for a shop or anything he would like to start. But with him, no way! He would have pawned the whole shit before he even would have started.

    Good riddance!
If everything seems under control, you're not going fast enough.

There are decent young blokes here too- and thank goodness for that, maybe a saving grace. But too many are indolent, unmotivated, utterly dependent, and totally unambitious. They even underperform in school compared to the females.

What hasn't been pointed out though is the Thai females role in this. They are doting mothers, who often resist any effort to compel their male offspring to get off his lazy arse and do something. Strange really- because most of them never had this luxury.

I agree on this. The mothers are a problem. Many of them suffered from shiftless bastard husbands, and yet there they are, raising a new generation of shiftless bastards.

I see my sons school mates - many of them are overweight (some grossly), and yet there are their mothers stuffing more crap into them. On the 'discipline" front they are mental - ignoring crap that would have me reaching for my belt, coddling the little blighters, right up to the point when they physically lash out giving them a head ringing slap for some minor crap. weird.

This is exactly right - I can see problems with food security. The youngsters have few of the elder's skills. They are in a place where they are losing the survival skills to feed themselves off the land, and not yet in a place where they can be formally employed and afford to feed a family, never mind the 'recreational' things, or settling gambling debts etc

Not to mention disappearing forests and creatures the were all part of the food their chain.

Older retired expats ...... in the more remote areas would be easy targets.

Even more chilling is the how daft some of the recent crimes seems to be.

The chance of being caught should deter a would be murderer.

Some of the crimes are so clumsy that a child could work it out.

Thinking that they have a perfect plot they do the deed ..... get caught. Now the problem is how to mete out sufficient punishment to send a message. Sticky one for the authorities.

Expected shortly after birth for females. Different for males. They are coddled, spoiled and undisciplined for most of their early years. Hence lack self responsibility and end up as wankers to the nth degree.

The clear result of an antiquated patriarchal culture. Things are changing but very slowly.

A very antiquated patriarchal culture.....on the surface.
As it is clearly evident, that Thailand is quite dominated day-to-day in a real matriarchal fashion.

I guess this all depends on whom you ask or who is observing - sociologically speaking.

Most Asian cultures truly are female dominated as equal as they are matrilineal.

Noted earlier, most of the last generation weren't anything like. Especially, as it applied to behaviour, respect, and general character traits.
Yet....it seems they don't mind that their offspring are quite embarrassing to the community.

My ex BiL just cut down 15 teak trees on our farm property to sell (which we are not living at) we pay him to take care of the place.

This is the guy who had a motorbike accident drunk, had a grossly infected leg from treatment at the local abbatior which he would have lost so I paid 20000 baht to get it treated properly and saved it.

Thanks a lot. Simply put, if he lost his leg we would have still had 15 more teak trees growing.

a lot of the crimes are committed by youths with mental ages of 10 or so

It could be down to dietary deficiency, or alcohol and drug taking by their mothers during pregnancy

whatever, there are a disproportionate number of retrarded youths in the village community

As far as I understand, it is against Thai law to cut down teak trees without
govenment permission , so he has broken a Thai law.

So has every punter that's banged a hooker.

I took it to mean a teak plantation, as opposed to natural teak forest. Bung?

    too many

virtually all internet cafes in the village and in town are loaded with adolescent and younger boys. Happens massively after school, but often half full with kids during the school day. Vegetables all of them. At least they're not out vandalizing and stealing but they're not starting out well in life.
I think the ussa became same albeit kids have computers and internet connect at home so don't congregate at cafes. ssdd.

My step-kids, I'd like to be able to say are different, well they have wireless at home so two of the three tend to hold up in their room until instructed to eat or mop the floor. Oldest boy 19 has zero ambition, skills, drive, or interest in anything but his dizzy computer game. I've spent the last three years advising and warning him that when he graduates high school he'd better get a job quick and move out, or I'll be tossing him out. Clueless and could care less and I think hunger will become a big motivator quite soon (as long as he doesn't come crying to mom that he has no money)...
