    Why no CBs in Thailand

While mobil phones are the in thing for comunicating today they are ok as long as you have someone number. In the UK when the CB craze was ripe you could contact anyone in range, I am surprised that farrangs in Thailand havent got CBs tocommunicate withothers in any area.

    "Thailand

Thailand has an 80 channel CB-style service using FM between 245.000 and 245.9875 MHz. Units are allowed up to 5 watts RF power. Besides personal use, the equipment is used by search and rescue and businesses. Operating rules are less restrictive than amateur radio service, with an initial license fee required. The hand-held units usually have a red case. There are an estimated one million users of the service, often in large cities."

The red 245MHz 'CB' transceivers can be bought and used without a licence. But you will really only find yourself speaking to security guards

The 2 metre amateur band in Thailand is very popular - with Thais. So it's all Thai language.

The only opportunity for English language radio communications is on HF - shortwave, as has been mentioned by the last poster. But to get an HF radio amateur licence in Thailand requires you to either take an exam (in written Thai!), or to have an existing overseas amateur radio HF licence which can usually be easily converted to a Thai licence. so it's catch-22 if you are already living in Thailand and don't have an overseas licence

I chat regularly on the 20 metre band from my base here in Phuket. Most evenings, there are plenty of 'hams' in India, Indonesia, China etc that I can have a chat with.

Nearly every boat I know of around here has one mine included. I also have a proper marine radio but the captain very rarely uses it if at all. I also have some motorcycle walkie talkie units that I use when riding the bikes with the wife. Never had a problem with the police over them at any time I have been stopped.

Used to keep one in the car when I traveled long distances during that insane 55 miles per hour speed limit the USA had for 20 years. It was quite useful, since all the truck drivers would be talking anytime a cop was around. Never had any desire to talk much on it.

Funny, now I live in a Country with the opposite problem, not enough traffic enforcement.

10-4 for a copy rubber ducky.

My dad had a CB radio in an old VW beetle. it had a PA speaker under the bonnet so you could annoy pedestrians crossing the road.

I had a CB radio in the car thirty years ago and still have it lying around the house somewhere. We use ordinary "walkie-talkie" thingies these days. We only use them when we are out in the countryside, where there is no mobile phone coverage, walking the dogs to alert each other to the possibility of other nasty type dogs running loose. Also, it's reassuring to know I can talk to the wife and daughter at any time to make sure they are safe.

The range is about five miles over open ground. The units are made by Uniden and comply with UK regulations. I think only about three other people use these in my area and they include a motor cycle training outfit. Lots of air space free, small, lightweight and sensible things.
Why can't I make new posts?

When I was at college in London (late 1970s), and when AM CB rigs were still illegal in the UK, I used to supplement my grant money by 'tweaking' up CB rigs to increase the output power, or I would modify the frequency synthesizer 'chip' to add more channels to the rigs.

Made quite a bit of money from that work..
