    Savage Dogs In Thailand

While on my recent trip to Thailand, l had 3 dogs show their displeasure to see me. The 1 st a smallish dog had a go at me while walking in a busy city street, it did'nt bite me but came close. The 2 nd showed its teeth while l was standing with Thai's in quiet area out side a restaurant, one of the locals or the owner sent it away. The 3rd time, l stepped out of my car, looked down the street where some 20 mtres away was a largish dog with what l thought was the owner. When this dog saw me, it started for me at full tilt, growling all the way, l got straight back into the car and shut the door just as it came level, l am sure if l had'nt, this thing would have ripped into me.
From that day on, l wouldnt get out of the car unless l had my dog club with me, a length of bamboo, the next savage dog was going to get a crease in its scull.
Have other's had similar problem's with Thai dogs, if so, what do you do ??
I should add that the areas where these attacks happened, falangs dont frequent the area, if at all.

A kick in the canine head with steel toed DMs often has the desired effect.

You have to show them you're the pack leader. I saw it on Nat Geo.

I've had encounters with them. Some Thais with vicious dogs allow them to attack people without stopping them.

Thai dogs are annoying, I routinely have problems with them. Particularly after dark, when they seem to think they own the streets.

But they're shithouses really, just front them up and make like you're going to boot them in the head and they don't really want to know.

There's one little fucker I annoyed one night while he slept in the middle of the road and I blasted the horn at him. Every time he sees me now he chases my scooter, he can keep up with it too for a few scary seconds. I might take Arry's advice and invest in some DM's or use him as a ramp .

The trick is to never show them Fear, which is not easy when the fukkers trying to take a chunk out of your foot and you're screaming like a little girl. I saw a Thai woman ride past on her push bike a few weeks back, she had a fat length of Bamboo defending herself.

^^ They do get the heart rate up thats for sure, the small one got me going cos l had no where to go. l love animals but those dogs in Thailand give me the creeps. What a way to spoil a stay there being bitten by a dog, and yes raybies is a major worry. As for owners doing nothing, the big one that got me back in the car said nothing to the bloody thing.
I thought a couple of years ago they were going to do something about the amount of dogs, you wouldnt think so, l recon there was more of em this trip.
Pepper spray might work, next trip l might just keep a little can in my pocket.

I recently read, if you are bitten by any animal in Thailand, even a break in the skin, go straight to hospital and get shots for raybies, if you do get it there is no cure.

There used to be a 2 legged dog not far from where I lived. Left front and left back. It used to leap to its feet and hop down the road then fall over. Friendly dog. Great balance. It appeared someone was looking after it was it was well fed and was around for a couple of years. Then a bus ran right over it and it resembled a 2 legged dog rug. Mai pen rai.

Some jackass down the street had 2 full size pit bulls he allowed to roam free around the neighborhood. They chewed up a few of the local strays quite badly but apparently that topped the limit even here, the police were involved and they are now gone.

Must have bit the wrong person's kid.

These dogs have usually had so many heavy object thrown at them that just stooping down and pretending to pick up a projectile is often enough to make them think twice about coming to near.

Exactly - dogs smell fear (or the wee wee dripping from your y-fronts)... more likely they can see you're wearing flipflops like a thai gipo or student fashion victom, and they know you can't run or kick, so you are fucked.
Do yourself a favour, either wear running shoes or steel capped riggers boots, and no dog will even so much as glance at you.

a thai once gave me some good advice:
simply bend down and make as if to pick up a rock or stick, and they back down every time (works on dogs, too!)

thai dogs are all well trained

One time I was walking on a quiet road leading to a beach on Koh Phangan with a woman when a pack of 5 odd dogs decided to try it on.

They were all growling and barking, I kept going as if to kick them and they'd back off for a bit and then come back agian. It'd been going on a good couple of minutes as we'd been walking by this stage and I was thinking the fuckers would actually bite us sooner or later.

In the end I started launching stones at them, they soon stopped advancing at us. Caught the most aggressive alpha dog with a nice chunk of rock full on in the face and he yelped like a little bitch!

I know someone who has deliberately run over some of the more agressive soi dogs in his area when they're resting on the warm road at night.

Same in the Philippines with stray dogs everywhere. Endeavouring to not show your fear does work unless the dog is really pissed off or with a one or more other dogs for support.
I used to carry a can of spray after being nipped a few times from behind and that did work if you get close enough to the bastards to have them inhale it. I recall on my morning walk in Talisay Cebu a householder had 5 dogs and they used to go crazy when I walked past. This day I was only 50 yards past and he let them out which resulted in the lead dog after me with his support group trying to catch up.
Deciding that ruinning away would not work I decided to reverse the scene and ran at the lead dog who was gob smacked and braked and quickly retreated with me in pursuit yelling every profanity I could muster.
After I cleaned my pants on my return home I went to the owners house and told him of the siutuation but got no sympathy.
A big stick works though but you are hardly likely to carry one around with you all the time. As much as I like animals wild dogs need to be culled or baited before they do damage.
In our estate here in Udon Thani I complained non stop until finally the strays were picked up, probably headed in a van to a Laos or Sakhon Nakhon dinner table.

I fecking hate the fact that I can't go for a run or a bike ride too far outside the moo bahn without some mangy mutts taking a run at me.
A mate of mine carries a water pistol filled with Ammonia when he's out on the bike, and the mutts all give him a wide berth now.

    Peddle faster!

Sometimes I just stop and back them down. Dogs get the vibe...

Thats right. The dogs are terratorial. Once you peddle outside their patch they give up the chase. As you say though, I sometimes wait until most of them have stopped chasing me then turn around near the edge of their patch and face them down by baring my teeth and snarling. Its funny to see them do an immediate volte face and retreat.

However , there is another useful tactic you can use if you are on a bike. That is to weave from left to right. When a dog gets within biting distance of one of your feet , just turn away from it and show it the rear mudguard. This means they are now have to change tack to get the inside line again and while they slow up to perform this directional change , you gain a breathing space . When they start to come again at your other foot just turn back and they are wrong footed again.

No such thing as a bad dog. Just bad, stupid, indifferent/negligent owners. The strays here are just a symptom of Thai "culture". How the hell can you say you love dogs and yet enjoy seeing them getting run over?
