    A tale of two banks

I decided (for reasons which need not detain us) to open a new savings account with the Krungsri bank. I've never had any dealings with them before, I usually use SCB, but I thought I'd give it a try. Put all my documents in a bag, went into the nearest branch and was directed to a sour-faced old bag.

No, no, cannot. Impossible. Wrong visa, no work permit.

Slightly miffed, but now feeling that I needed to prove her wrong, and got on my trusty steed and drove a half a mile to another branch of the same bank. Lovely girl, big smile.

How can I help you? No work permit? Ah, you have this kind of visa. Just a minute, I call my boss. Yes, Mr benbaaa, no promplem. Can open account now. You want credit card too?

    Thailand in a nutshell.

The sleep of reason brings forth monsters.

    Yeah, I can relate.
I actually had a teller I always went to who spoke excellent English (with a smile) and always helped me with my inquiries.
    Of course, she got transferred.
Back to dealing with the no smile, no english, no help.

I find the manager helpful but he's usually busy.
I had to tell the assistant about an account they offered that she had no idea about. I got online and showed it to her on their website, she then called someone and we got it opened.
    Some care, some don't.

Similar experience. SCB said no for the reasons you mentioned. Bank of Ayuddaya saw that I was going to make a 500,000 deposit and were all smiles.

First bank account I opened here was in Thonglor, I only had me passport, said I wanted to transfer 50 million in a few days time; they opened it double sharpish and gave me about 15 gifts... they're still waiting for that big transfer...

My family and friends at home think I'm joking or lying when I tell them how the same bank that told me I could not have a current/checking account because I am a foreigner gave me a 70 percent car loan.

Funnily enough, the same company that gave me a car loan (70%) then sent me and the wife a letter offering a loan of upto 200k (half of the car loan paid off now), then when she said she wanted 100k loan they said "sorry cannot because your husband is a foreigner..." - the car loan is 100% in my name from this same company...

Pathetic this place. I have BKK Bank account in Pattaya and to deposit and withdraw at the local branch here incurs a fee.

Get interest no probs for what it's worth.

Read somewhere Kasikorn or however it's spelt has been the best performing for the past couple of years. No idea if that means anything.

A good bank who have worked very hard on their retail business.

Nonetheless, I've had good service from Bangkok Bang and SCB over the years.

I have a Bangkok-based K-Bank account that charges 15b for each ATM withdrawal outside of Bangkok province. Thai banks are run as semi-individual entities in each province.
