    Selling Thai Children

A friend recently heard where a 4 year old Thai girl was missing from the family home one morning. Enquiring as to where the young girl was, the reply, she is gone. The guy is sure she was sold. Is it common for young children to be sold in Thailand ?

It might happen it might not. There are rumours of kids getting snatched from time to time (round here) but I've never met anyone who knows someone it's actually happened to.

It happens in the west from time to time so I don't see why it wouldn't happen here, definitely not common though.

Better than eaten by a Dingo !Seriously the kid can hardly be worse off than with the sort of folks who would trade 'em.

^Thai's do seem to be more up to swapping their children around with relatives than we are in the west, particularly if those relatives have access to a better school. I know quite a few civil servants in bangkok with rural relatives children staying with them to get into schools in bangkok.

Can't imagine a four-year old would sell for much. Too young to do much of anything. Lots of places to go other than jumping to "sold". Visiting relatives, etc, etc. But, since we have no details at all, it is impossible even to speculate.

people who want a kid will pay a lot; adoption is expensive, as is IVF

I met three french couples in Vietnam (staying at the same guesthouse) who were "adopting" kids. No real info on where they came from except the story they had been told

^Good point. I was thinking totally along the lines of slavery to pay off debts, either sexual or slave labor. Didn't focus on the adoption side of it.

What I thought is a 4 year old would go to a childless couple, be it in Thailand or else where. Not for the sex trade, that does happen to older kids.

I know a Thai couple in Nan who have adopted four young girls and brought them up as their own daughters.
They got them from single mothers who were unable to provide for their offspring.

I am no expert of child selling in Asia or LOS, but from my small limited view of Asian culture: Everything is for sale at a price. In the subject case mentioned, there's no facts to support the speculation.

Been here for a year or two.

Never seen it. Could it happen? Yes. But doubtful.

Agreed but statements like these are good fodder for the scum missionaries.

...and in nearly all cases, this same speculation tends to be exaggerated to the extreme.

I asked my girlfriend if she had ever heard of children being sold by their parents. She said that she had certainly heard of people abducting children to sell them into slavery.

Her parents warned her to stay away from strange people in trucks, and be wary of anyone you don't know because they might try to steal you.
She also mentioned that she had heard of children being stolen for pedophiles or worked until they are old enough to be sold to a brothel. Children are sometimes deliberately disfigured, so they can be put to work as beggars. She believes that there is also a market for organs for transplant.

I don't know whether it is that common place that children have to live in fear of being snatched, but its certainly a good story to keep the kids near the house.

It could all be rumour and old wives tales, but i wouldn't dismiss the idea out of hand.

Still, hope the 4 year old girl in the OP is merely living with an auntie somewhere for a while.

And I haven't heard of it happening or seen anything in the media either so from that can we say it doesn't happen often?

As an aside, I was in Vietnam last year and when we pulled up at the lights two ladies with a baby tried to push it onto us .
Not sure what that was about, was I supposed to put it in our bag when coming home?
Do they have baby sniffing dogs at customs?

The short and unfortunate answer is yes. Unhappily, I don't have facts and figures at my finger tips at the moment. Please visit UNESCO and World health Organization websites for details.

    Yes, it may happen.
But it is far far from being common.

    Speaking of factual.....

I saw a program on Thai TV last year, was on the Bangkok buses too, of a gang that took kids, they had loads of 'em, stuck them in a room and used them as and when for prostitution; kids were all ages - it does happen, and I suspect it is more common than many of you folks think.

It's also very likely that Thailand has the same small percentage of perverts who kidnap and murder children as in the west. Telling your kids to beware of strangers is universal.
