Which Expat are you (if u are an Expat)

    Where do you fit in?

    Pioneer

You are an opportunity-focused expatriate, and you
are willing to relocate solely for the prospect of making
a great deal of money and doing something interesting.

You think nothing of charging in to an almost native,
potentially dangerous environment and care nothing
    of dilapidated infrastructure, squalor.
You are willing to learn the local language and don't
care if anyone else speaks English there... you love
the almost lawless, wild west persona and can literally
    smell the money everywhere.

    Expeditioner
You are a classical traveler in the mold of British
merchants and explorers- you want to make the
journey overseas, but you want your amenities too,
complete with a triple mocha latte.
You want to storm the plains of the Serengeti...
with an armed guide. You want to see India up
close and personal... then go back to your five star hotel.

In short, you want the richness of the expat
experience, but you want it to be easy and painless.

    Retiree
You have had a full career and are looking for a switch...
it's not about playing golf every day (though there will
be plenty of that), it's about finding a new direction in
life, taking new steps, and getting energized again.
You are looking for something worthwhile to throw
your time and effort into, and you want to be surrounded
by like minded people who are in a similar position in life.

In a way, you want to turn back the clock and find a
place that reminds you of home years ago- 1950s America,
    for example.

    Nomad
You are a permanent traveler. You roam the globe
because there are simply too many amazing places
to see, and abundant opportunities in each.

You perhaps have a 'home base' somewhere, but you
don't see it for months at a time. You know people all
over the world and enjoy making new connections
    and trying new things.
You count air miles as an asset and talk about
'running down to Panama for a few days' as if
you were going down the street to pick up a
quart of milk at the grocery store.

    Hermit
You shun contact with most of the world because
they just don't get it. You are passionate about your
beliefs and are looking for a place where you can
execute an agenda- growing organic food, preparing
    for social chaos, etc.
You are possibly interested in setting up a small
community with like-minded souls, preferably away
from major civilization where you can live your life
without bother or interference from governments
    or corrupt social institutions.

    Internationalist
You are a smart, educated, opportunistic professional
that is a cross between the pioneer and expeditioner-
you thrive on opportunity but need some basic structure
to feel comfortable... probably because you have a family
or some other obligations beyond yourself.
As long as basic needs are met- safety, schools,
healthcare, etc., you are happy and can focus on
building a life and a new business.

    Hedonist
You have been successful in life and simply want
to enjoy the fruits of your efforts over the years- wine,
women, whatever else seems interesting. You almost
feel like a kid again, free to jump on a plane to follow
your favorite team, see an old friend, or make new ones.
You pick a country because of its opportunities for
pleasure, and are always willing to explore new ones.

In all honesty though, not everyone is dreaming about
    leaving their home country.

    Prepper
You're staying put with your loved ones. You love your
home country, or what it once stood for, and have no
plans of leaving for "greener pastures".

You see what's coming and are taking steps to
make sure you and your family have your
    preparations in order.

I fall into a mix of
    Pioneer and Nomad
as have been on the road since the early 70's stopping at more than one place for a year or more ( 25 here in Thailand and still here :-)

Is there a combo of several of the major categories mentioned. can a mix and match profile be portrayed? possibly with percentages associated of the major categories that make up the high bread category?

    .

For me that says it all. I've been accused of hating my Country, I don't. It just saddens me so much the direction American culture and lifestyle has gone in the last 40 or so years. I remember in the 1970- early 80's when going to work was fun, before the PC tsunami hit and adults could still make adult decisions for themselves and had to live with the consequences.

    Hi

Not sure which category I`d fit in.

I became tired of work and cold weather in UK so decided to retire early out here in Thailand.
    So far it`s been OK.

I always thought there were only 3 types of expats, Mercenaries , missionaries , and misfits. I am certainly in the last one. ( how do you spell mercinaries anyway ???)

I remember Thailand when I first came here in 1984. Long before materialism was even a word I think. Looking at Thailand today, can anyone realistically state it hasn't changed for the worst? As the US has gone down hill, Thailand is in the same boat. Outside of the rural folks, most Thai's would sell their own mother if they could make 5 baht. Greed, corruption, environmental hazards, slaughter of wild animals for profit, Buddhist temples for profit, you name it, Thailand has changed to respect only 1 thing, which is money. That is reality.

Marmite, I think you should have written:

What is the label for "My home country is actually a good place to live, but I was unable to succeed and prosper due to my own stupidity. I also found it impossible to get a women, so I did what every other loser does and moved to Thailand."

No but we're still better than Europe or Australia; the nonsense of verbal hate crimes has so far been rejected as the violation of free speech it is, and we still have our guns and can still use them.
It did not have to go this way; if not for the wacko feminists who want to be equal when it's convenient and protected like children when that's convenient, the corporate lobbyists who always get their way, and the touchy feely "don't offend anyone" types it would still be a livable place. The religious nuts have always been there and always will be.

My history in brief..As a school kid i read many books by a chap called Willard Price, i think it was he who sowed a tiny seed for adventure in my head. At the age of 15 i joined the British Navy, after the Navy i travelled throughout the UK, Europe and Scandinavia as a pipe fitter welder. Then i got married, after 12 years of marriage i felt bogged down, so i buggered off to Africa for 5 years. So, finally after 40 years after leaving school, 3 1/2 of them spent here in Thailand i can finally say, "i`ve found what i`ve been looking for"
I regard myself in the category of "Happy and Content with his lot"
