Finney64, Thanks much. I will keep it in mind and keep this thread.
Just got scared a bit when I watched crazy VV backpackers on youtube.

Our next trip is planned for Andaman islands though, but there will be other opportunities. So thx again.

So much to explore, so little time and money

" and the food was poor compared to Thai food."

That's bullshit! I have lived here for 6 years and the food is better than in Thailand. Also there is plenty of nightlife, you just have to know where to look.

I would agree with Vientianeboy to a certain extent. On both counts, food and nightlife.

Nice report khmen. The beach at Chaolao midweek is annother nice spot to indulge in a puff if you're ever down that way. Great sunsets.

We are going there in October because i dont want to spend 4 weeks with mum and dad on the farm, too hard.
But we are only going to stay at one hotel owned by a couple of brothers and a wife who work for us. They have offered free accommodation in Khong Islands, I think it is rather remote. http://www.visitasiatravel.com/.Laos...acilities.html If anybody knows of anything around there that would be of interest to a tourist i would love to hear, mind you nothing urgent. We will be paying them coz at the end of the day its only 20 bucks a night anyway, but they said there is lots of sight seeing around there (as they would) but i cant see anything on the net other than paddocks. Just wondering if anybody has been there and around who can tell me? I am happy to sight see, anything is better than 4 weeks on the farm.

I stayed with a friend who has lived there for years. He showed me around, and the nightlife did not impress, the clubs, the bars.. as for the food - I only eat peasant style food - perhaps you eat more up market.
I preferred Savannakhet & Pakse to Vientiene, so it's probably a case of different tastes.

Also stayed a while on Don Det, and liked it a lot. Very laid back & friendly.

Big draw is of course Wat Phu, ancient Khmer temple in Champassac.

Otherwise Phaphae Falls, 10km from the Cambodian border or a round trip by moto in Atapeu province.

Don't just stay on Khong Island, you'll get bored out of your head. Khone the same, one's famous for its backpackers...

Well, it ain't Bangkok or Pataya or Phuket, that's for sure. You need tits bouncing nekkid on the bar?

As for food, Lao has regional dishes, royal cuisine, 'peasant' food, up- market, budget, whatever you're looking for.

What kind of 'peasant' food do you eat in Thailand?

Wow so quick already got a response.
I am happy sight seeing temples, old ones in particular.
I am also happy to eat whatever is on offer, anything, but not big on cats, dogs or bugs, anything else is fine.

must say the food in laos was a bit bland, thailand beats it hands down

    Hi Pol the Pot ....

I avoid the tourist haunts, so in Patts, walking along Beach Road is much more fun than most bars. Never been to Phuket - I like Bali as I can surf, and I really like the food. Phuket is for the moneyed classes.
Can't say I like BKK - too big, too many cars, too many people - but the klong taxi boats, & the river taxis, are great fun. Shopping is good.
In Laos, it seemed to me that people bought food raw & went home & cooked it - there was no street food eating as there is in Thai. Maybe I missed it.
I did like the coffee in a plastic bag stalls - there was one standout coffee 'shop' in Pakse, but only a very few grilled chicken stalls and small restaurants, all more pricey than in Thai.
Here there are so many cheap eateries, and cooked food markets, so you can find the ones you really like by trying them all. I just didn't find the wide range of choice in Laos that I have here.

In Vientiane - can you point me to one or two places with good, non-falang food, that's not too pricey?

In Laos you get night markets just like everywhere in SEA. You didn't see any? When I was there last they were easy to find, can't believe they've all disappeared.

In Vientiane I believe there used to be a biggish one on the same road as the museum but further east, every little ban has a night/ food market with BBQ'd stuff, cooked stuff and sticky rice.

No stalls down by the river anymore?

There are also at least two goodish Viet restaurants on one of the main roads, as well as Indian and Thai restaurants.

I certainly never felt there was a lack of choice anywhere I went except upcountry.
