The little guest house pictured is in paksan. a sleepy little border town on the Mekong. Fook all going on there but there was a bit of boat racing which is what we were escaping vientiane for. cheap at 70000 kip a night. paksans a 3 hour drive from vientiane, we were headed for Konglor cave another 3 hours down the road

The next day it was about another 3 hours to reach Konglor cave, Tourisms in its infancy here and the roads a little rugged but i can definately recommend the boat trip through the cave, Kids loved it

In Konglor itself there isnt much to choose from but we got a nice place called spring river resort, about $50 a night but good for 2 adults and 2 nippers
My last road trip Laos & Thailand-xjqwk9c-jpg

Cheaper accomadation can be found though

Dont be expecting Haute cuisine though. most people bring there own or eat at the resort, we got lucky, the food was great at spring river resort

    Fish larp

And something the wife had, no prizes for guessing what it is

washed down with 10 of these

Good show BLD. The Kong Lor was on my list but we missed it. We ended up at a different cave just south of there on our way to the four thousand Island area. That trip was cut short due to high water so I guess I need prior planning on when such a trip is possible. I gathered they knew Kong Lor water was too high for the trip so they took me to some high ground cave that a river ran under.

Beautiful area in a mountainous region so I will not complain. Thanks for taking the time to post up pics of your adventures.

    The fishes.

It was my first foray to the cave, its a bit of the beaten path to get to, but well worth it, yeah sometimes the boats dont run if the rivers high, we got lucky

we paid about 230 000 kip for 2 boats which is crazy cheap for a 2 hour trip, first the boatboys paddle you across the river before transferring you to the motorised ones
My last road trip Laos & Thailand-cajv4tt-jpg

you get a life jacket and a helmet

The cave entrance. it goes for 7 kms

It was pitch black in there apart from what you could see with your headlamp but at one point the boatboys stop to let you walk through the cave while they take the boats around to meat you

we went about lunchtime and were the only 2 boats in there, i can imagine it would get bloody noisy with plenty of boats chugging around, but they seem to keep the boat numbers down, its run as a sort of cooperative

Konglor is nice enough for a day trip but 1 night is really enough.

    Locals are Friendly

We hit the road for a 3 hour trip to Thakek

My wife wanted to stay overnight in Thakek but i had been there many times before and convinced her that its super boring and we were better of crossing the bridge and staying in Nakhon phanom on the thai side. We had lunch in Thakek and took a few photos of the old French style buildings then fooked of

I always get the job of filling out the Lao and Thai immigration forms for all 4 of us so was pretty pissed of that the dozy fooker on the Lao side hadnt bothered to return them to our passports after stamping, resulting me filling out another 4 Apart from that the bridge crossing should of taken no more than 10 minutes.

^^ I've never been across the 'Friendship Bridge'.

Didn't know what to expect ... but I expected 'more friends' (traffic).

    Good travel thread.
