The road leading from route 13 to the mine was in bad shape so construction crew were tasked to fix it, gotta get those copper trucks out

This is the old bridge style

Dont want to loose any copper on a shitty road

    Out goes the copper convoy

Good to see the ladies earning their keep. Presumably same deal as the men?

The road building, would the mine be responsible for the financing and construction or the Lao authorities?

The mine resealed and widened the road to the mine ( called Route 28A) and added some bridges at there expense , we also found a lot of UXO while doing that. Route 13 from the viet border to savannakhet is always in shocking condition, japs have financed the road works on that section twice now in the last 10 years. We would be waiting a long time for the Lao govt to finance it>

Very informative post. Can you tell me of any mining operations still active in Laos and cambodia, I am retired living in Thailand . I have over thirty yrs experience in mining and aggregate industries. Just wondering if i could put some of my talents to use in some sort of consultancy role.
    James.

Hi James. MMG and PHU BIA are the largest miners here . Both are winding down but both tend to use consultants and contractors instead of direct hires. So its possible. Jump on linkedin and search both those companies. Then Click Follow. That will.bring up current vacancies. I don't know any HR people in either company otherwise I would flick you an email. Check out there websites as well

Thanks for this story. I really enjoyed reading it. And I didn't know what a big world a mining site is.

Hi beerlaodrinker, I was at Sepon for 7 years in Resource and Mine Geology (Dave). I am writing a paper on Sediment-Hosted Gold in Lao and AU potential in general. Can I ask where the photos of the excavator and grizzly sluice was at? Also the underground mine with the rail bogies, plus the panning photo. Might I use them in my paper? I am in Bangkok atm. Hope to here from you soon as the paper is due shortly.
PS. Sepon was the best time in my life. Surreal really. Cheers to having amazing adventures in the future.

^ If in Laos you'll soon learn that patience is not only a virtue, it's a requirement aimed at preserving ones sanity. That being said my hat is off to BLD for this one.

It's the first thread I ever saw on TD. I was doing research on Laos at the time and found this gem of a thread. One bite and I was hooked. I couldn't put it down until I read the whole thread.

Since that time many great threads, posts and posters have come and gone. I must say it's been a real pleasure and a treat to skim through the forum at my leisure wondering just what these folks might be like in real life. It would be cool to make a TD meet up some year, like it or not. Haha. Just kidding. Hell I'll even spring for the pizza. Hope you like Jacks'.

Thanks again BLD for a glimpse of what your life once was. Great stuff, rock on and Cheers.

    The Fish.

Just out of interest, with so much invested in the enterprise, around how much (in $US) would the cargo of the trucks in the convoy be worth? Looks like at least 6 trucks, if they're all part of the same convoy.

    Cheers.

Not sure exactly luigi as copper prices fluctuated. At a high point over $8000 a tonne the lowest point $ down to 4000 or so a tonne. Those sheets of copper are bloody heavy and why the trucks dont look part8cularly loaded you would be surprised how much weight is on the truck. Theres also a weight restriction on lao and thai roads. A convoy of trucks would be m8llions of $ they were once hijacked and lost a truck full of cathode. That was later found on a boat heading for hongkong

A few years ago there was a police scam outed on the Thai side of things. Trucks could buy a 2 or 3 day pass, get a blue or green window sticker depending on which one, then not have to be weighed at any Thai weighing stations.

It got outed by the truckers when the rozzers doubled the price and there was a bit of a head to head over the new price.

It's little wonder the inside lane on most roads here have the topography of the fokin' Himalayas given 40 degrees of heat and overloaded truck after truck.
