    A day in Vientiane..

Hi had to go and catch up with someone in Vientiane yesterday..whilst waiting at Airport, no fewer than 20 Toyota Landcuisers V8 model..around $100.000 Aud +in Oz.dropped of and picked up people..
Lots of Chinese tourists, with at least 6 Gantry cranes dotting the skyline..(construction)

Seems that there is some serious money in Vientiane , with lots of projects going on.

Quite relaxing, no one hassled me, not even Tuk Tuk drivers or Taxi's .
Would seem like a good place to spend a few years enjoying the country, foods good.
Been there a few times before, never really took much notice.
Spoke to a few people, one who lives/ works in BKK, but flies up for regular meetings, asked him (40 to 50) age bracket, if he and his Oz wife could live in Laos, very quickly answered yes, but no work for him..

Anybody else thought about living there?

I think I would like to in the future.

Thailand is going down hill and Laos is on the up.

Just not up enough for me yet.

The benefits (for Westerners) of ex European colonization are a welcome change to Thailand.

The last time I was in Laos about a year ago I was really surprised at how expensive it had become, the restaurants were more expensive than Thailand by quite some margin.

I've been to Laos many times.. love the place - very refreshing break from Thailand.

People seemed very genuine and warm. Check out the wonderland nightclub, if you go.. was a blast.. food was expensive and not as good as Thai food... but otherwise a fantastic place, with a chilled out vibe.

Thanks for the replies..had a couple of meals, in retrospect, what I ate, was about 10% more expensive than Thailand, but on the positive side, different vegetables..
    Not as spicy..
People very friendly..plenty of Beer Lao shirts everywhere..to small though for me, got some for the daughters..
NZD..to old for nightclubs..but good chilled out vibe..
With my US trip put on hold(G/F is unavailable) we are probably going to spend a month or so there (G/F is available for that)
Looking forward to trying some curries Auroria..thanks for the tip..

People rave about Beer Lao, but to be honest it's always just given me headaches and hangovers.

I quite like the colonial architecture too.

If the infrastructure was a bit better, I'd probably have moved there already.

    I'm guessing:

    People smuggling.

    Drug smuggling.

International aid etc that goes straight to personal accounts.

Massive corruption and nepotism at every level.

    In no particular order.

Nah, there's no corruption in Lao luigi they are all totally honest and will never try to fook you over, just having a larf, I've been here nearly 11 years and have no intention of leaving, it is what it is but with a fairly vibrant economy the traffic is becoming out of control. If you thought Thai drivers were assholes have a look at the Lao,s theywon't give you an inch. Road rules, speed limits? It doesn't apply, you got 12 year old school kids on scooters doing whatever the fuck they want, and the mentality the same with the adults in there newly purchased Vigo. I really don't lie driving here, it's quite the ordeal

Haha, I've said it before and I'll say it again. The jump from buffalo and cart in rice paddies to modern vehicles on roads was just too quick for them. It's almost as if they think they can commandeer them the same. Add the most delicate of egos and stubbornest of minds and there ya go. Thai roads. Glad to hear the Lao are even worse.

Ya hit the nail on the head mate, the jump from cart to Vigo was enormous, I still find it amazing that anyone with a lazy $1000 for a down payment can leave the show room with D Vigo and pay it off to the tune of about 1% interest, then drive around town as if they were still driving an iron Buffaloe in the village, I've had to adapt my driving style to blend in , but the fuckers are fearless. They come at me on both sides of the road, I do a fair bit of driving in town daily and not one day goes by where I don't see an accident of some sort, some of them are quite spectacular and make me shake my head In disbelief that the resultant carnage is even possible.. WTF . I never drive at night here, that's even more fucked up.,
