The way they go out of their way by speeding up to make life difficult for you by pulling out (or in front of them) is impressive. Followed by them breaking hard at the last moment.

Ahh.. so I'm not crazy? it wasn't my imagination then? I wasn't just me...

Kiwis are starting to drive more impatiently/aggressively like that now...they used to let you in with a wave, now that's the exception, rather than the norm.

It's one of the rules in the driving test. If you don't speed up to make life hard for someone moving into your lane you don't get your Thai Driving License.

BLD, pretty much the same in Thailand. When I first came to Udon over 11 years ago there was little road congestion. Now it's like BKK and I have to drive like they do to survive. I can't believe they are only second in deaths per capita due to vehicle accidents. They must not be tabulating things correctly.

I haven't been to Vientiane since I learned I could just do an in and out for my 90 stamp. One of these days I will have to stay a day or two to see how things have changed. I always enjoyed staying at the Vientiane Best Western and they have a great pepper steak dinner.

You would be amazed Rick, the traffic here is nuts compared to just a few years ago, when you cross the border at nongkhai have a look at all the car carrier trucks bringing new vigos etc into Lao, an everyday occurance. Vientianes not designed for that amount of traffic, skinny little roads( thanks France you fuckers), udons also getting congested

I believe it's where many stolen vehicles end up.

Not your standard Western type of stolen vehicle.

But ones bought new through some scam.

One Thai convinces 10 Thais to buy 20 cars that they will rent out. Customers waiting. 10% profit per month. They all chip in to do it and by the time the first month's income is due all the cars are in Laos and the head Thai is nowhere to be found.

Either nowhere to be found or at his desk in the local police station.

Why do wealthy Laotians travel to Thailand to use Thai doctors and hospital services for major procedures?

(Are the medical facilities that poor ?)

Exactly, the standard of health care in Lao is appalling, it's slowly getting better , Lao,s with the money and having health issues will always get there ass over the bridge to Thailand, They know the doctors in Lao only got a half assed education and likely bribed there way through the school system , same way as they did. The Thais are miles ahead when it comes to that sort of shit, you still need to weigh up your options though, Bangkoks an hours flight away, udon Thani is an hours drive, better to go to Bangkok me thinks,

Are you still chancing a fine/jail term if you're caught screwing a local? I met a girl in a bar one night and she was very wary when we left together.

Ended having to arrange to meet again when she was in Thailand.

Vientiane's first mall, two months ago. Hardly anyone walking about in there

Bit of a half arsed food court upstairs...and the squid that made her stomach hurt later on...I had the noodles. Fuck knows how old that squid was, or how long it'd been frozen. It did taste slightly 'off'..my guts were ok, just... a few smelly farts thats all

^ I found Lao food, overpriced and inferior to Thai food.

With the exception being that hi-so, huge red, multi-level pub, (forgot the name) run by a foreigner (Frenchie I think...)...

5 years ago now... that was good food/drink.

Me too, I was quite disappointed after hearing how great the street food was meant to be. Most street places I saw were filthy, with cooked meat looking like it had been sitting there for days, but would of course be reheated over a bbq.
Most bbqs I saw were only fired up when a customer ordered, which leads me to assume the meat would be a death trap.

Ate at a vietnamese place by the riverfront/market area. It's the only place so can't miss it. It was ok, nothing special.

    Fried aubergines

    Viet curry & rice

Some pot thing you mix together with the pork & rice noodles

For breakfast and lunch this place was excellent:

Plenty of wagons selling baguettes with various fillings

Sunset & sunrise on the Mekong

Just don't light up in the park by the riverside

Champa Garden Resort, about 900 Baht a night, up a small lane off the riverfront. Very decent & comfortable for the cost.

Just don't bother with any cheap shaving products, or any electricals for that matter

the cops still shake down the occasional farang especially around pee mai when they need extra money or usually its because the farang or the girl with the farang have pissed someone of , havent heard of it happening for a longtime now though. Bit of a lottery though,

Its a white elephant pat, Theres fuck all in there to buy except the usual chinese dross, half the thing is still unoccupied as vendors wont pay the silly rents they are asking, its only redeeming feature is it has a decent cinema, if you can be bothered to brave the downtown traffic madness, There another complex near the river that has about 300 penang style shophouses, that has about 3 shops open so far, its been built for about 3 years now, Another couple of malls are still under construction, very strange

Mostly in Thai, but there's an app you can download to tell you when the English ones are on, but when you arrive you usually find the movies been rescheduled, better to rely on word of mouth from friends or just wait for it to pop up in the pirate dvd shop, usually don't have to wait long,

Hi Katie, Talat Sao means morning market if you got there at 6 it's all over, not a bad market for buying handicrafts etc and the top look is all gold and jewelry shops if your feeling the need to don the bling bling

Just had thanksgiving dinner last night at BILs plalace on the river. I forgot all they called it but it's 6am the next morning and I fell great if not a bit hungover and I couldn't sleep all that well with the ac kicking on and off.

The river road is all tore up. New sewer systems seem to have been placed. And yes traffic is madd.

I was going to rent a car and tool up to VV but all family and friends here from the states say bad idea. So I'm renting the niebor insted. Two days hire for two hours pay back home. Fair enough I said. May tour a bit longer. This will be a test run to see how roads are outside of the capital.

P.s. where is pizza now? Still time to put a pick thread together. Arizona is perfect this time of year.

    Cheers.............fish.
